NDW Week 2 - Tag Team Turmoil

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/05/04 at 21:28:44

I was fairly surprised by how things turned out in this card.  The teams that advanced to the finals weren't the ones I would have expected, and the result of the match was not what I had expected.  Still, things turned out okay in the end, as you'll see.

A draw in the Quarterfinals! Neither team was able to gain the victory before the time limit expired, although the Briscoe Brothers got extremely close with just seconds remaining.  Therefore, the winner of the next match will have a free ride to the finals, and therefore have an excellent chance of picking up the tag team gold.

Rating: * 1/4

What an upset!  Jamie Noble and Sean O'Haire come out on top against the team of The Undertaker & Kevin Nash, who appeared to be unstoppable - at least on paper.  Matches don't happen on paper, however, they happen in the ring, and in the end Noble's excellent technical wrestling allowed him to reverse a suplex into a small package for a quick 3 count!

(The Undertaker and Kevin Nash head to the back, frustrated by their sudden
embarassing defeat at the hands of Sean O'Haire and Jamie Noble.)

Kevin Nash: What the hell was that, 'Taker?  You just lost us our shot at the
gold.  I mean, look at us.  We're two of the most dominant big men in the
history of the sport, and we didn't even get past the quarterfinals!  What the
hell is up with that?

(Undertaker glares at Kevin Nash, then speaks in a low, ominous voice.)

The Undertaker: They got lucky, Nash.  That is all.  Their luck will not hold
forever, and before long we *will* be the champions.  This is a minor setback,
nothing more.

Kevin Nash: I'd like to think that, but you didn't even lose to the big one!

The Undertaker: Kevin... you have nothing to fear.  In the end, our foes will
all Rest... In... Peace...

Rating: ** 3/4

Another quick victory by Nana and Hardy cements their place in the finals of the Tag Team Title Tournament.  Even though they've had 2 matches this evening, they've had less total time in the ring than their opponents.  Therefore, this should be an excellent title match.

Jamie Noble and Sean O'Haire won via default.

(Amidst the rafters in the ceiling of the Arena, Edge kneels, staring down at
the action below.)

Edge: Jerry Lawler...  I've known you for years, and I even watched you as a
child.  You were always a clever man, Jerry.  It dissappoints me that you
don't understand that it's your time to move on.  What purpose can you possibly
have in overstaying your welcome here?  You can't wrestle half as well as you
once could.  But instead of helping the next generation, you're holding on to
your past glory in a vain attempt to recapture it once again.

(Chris Sabin can be seen making his way unsteadily toward where Edge is
perched)

Edge: And Matt Sydal.  I underestimated you.  You're a brave man... or a
foolish one.  It's difficult to say.  You have a great deal of potential, Matt.
Don't throw it away by letting Lawler manipulate you for his own ends...

Chris Sabin: God Edge, what the hell are you doing up here?  Who do you think
you are, Sting?  Maybe Raven if you keep talking like that?

Edge: Oh, hey Chris.  I'm trying to get more serious about things.  Hopefully
I'll do better that way.

Chris Sabin: Are you still stressing about losing to Sydal?  That kid's a
psycho, Edge.  He caught you off guard.  Now quit all of this angsty stuff and
let's get down from here and get ready for our match.

Edge: As you wish...

Chris Sabin: Edge...

Edge: Yeah, okay.  Sorry.

Rating: * 1/2
(The Global Tag Team Titles remained vacant.)

What happened?  The match to determine New Deal Wrestling's first Tag Team Champions was going so well, then it was thrown out when Jamie Noble tried to use the tights to gain the victory!  Next week there will be a major announcement with regards to the Tag Team Titles.  A Tag Team Title match of some sort is definately not out of the question!

Edge and Chris Sabin defeated Jerry Lawler and Matt Sydal in 0:26:26.
Rating: ***

Edge and Chris Sabin came out on top in their First Blood Tag Team match against Jerry Lawler and Matt Sydal.  Lawler was reportedly furious, while Sydal was... well... irrational is probably the best word for it.  Lawler has demanded a singles match next week against Edge, the man that busted him open.  Chris "HAIL" Sabin was impressed by Sydal, and wants to see for himself just how dangerous this unstable young talent can be.

Card rating: ** 1/4

Match of the evening:  Funaki & Red vs. The Briscoe Brothers

Next week, the issue of who will hold the Tag Team Titles will be laid to rest.  Additionally, Edge will take on Jerry Lawler, and Chris Sabin will face Matt Sydal.  Tune in next week to see all this and more!

Just so you know...the Edge stuff was tremendous...=)

I like the mix of wrestlers!

Glad you liked it.  ;D  One of the things I regret is not really following up much on it.  As such, it comes across more as poking fun at WWE's inability to give him a character (is he an angsty goth?  An intense and almost unstoppable wrestler?  A goofy surfer-type?  Who knows!) than as a coherant character of my own.  I like how the promo turned out, but like I said, one promo in a vaccuum does not a good character make.
