WWE Smackdown!
Date: May 26, 2006
Location: Bakersfield, CA

Interview:
The World Heavyweight Champion, Kurt Angle, is in the ring and he puts over
Randy Orton for the challenge at WWE MAYhem. But once again, the wrestling
machine was able to retain the World Heavyweight Championship by making his
opponent tap, in this case Randy Orton. While Randy Orton was a worthy
contender, Kurt Angle says that it is time to defend the title against other
worthy contenders, like say...Batista. This name draws a loud reaction from the
fans who are all for a Kurt Angle versus Batista match.

This brought out Randy Orton. Randy Orton tells Kurt Angle and the fans to
forget Batista. The only wrestler that deserve a title shot against Kurt Angle
is Randy Orton. Randy Orton explains that Teddy Long put him at a disadvantage
when he made his title challenge against Kurt Angle a Submission Match. That
favored Kurt Angle too much. Randy Orton thought Kurt Angle wanted to defend
his title against the very best? Well, if you put the very best at a
disadvantage, like Randy Orton, are you really facing the best competition?

Kurt Angle wants to know what Randy Orton's point to interupting him is. Randy
Orton laughs and tells Kurt Angle that it should be obvious. Randy Orton wants
another title shot. But this time, Kurt Angle is going to play by his rules.
Randy Orton wants their title match to be fought under no disqualification
rules. Kurt Angle wants to know what is in it for him to accept this match,
which could put him at a disadvantage. Randy Orton says that if Kurt Angle
accepts the No DQ stipulation, he'll leave Smackdown! if he cannot defeat Kurt
Angle tonight. Randy Orton reasons that if he cannot defeat Kurt Angle in a
rematch, he might as well leave and challenge for another title on RAW. Kurt
Angle thinks it over and accepts the match by telling Randy Orton that he
better start watching John Cena matches, the WWE Champion, since he's sending
Randy Orton to RAW because tonight Kurt Angle will retain the World Heavyweight
Championship.

Finlay pinned Gunner Scott with the Tombstone Piledriver in 0:12:00.
Rating: *** 1/2

In his first match on Smackdown!, Gunner Scott got a surprising upset victory
over Booker T. Mr. Kennedy did the ring introductions before the match. In this
match, Gunner Scott was trying to capture lightning in a bottle and get another
surprising upset over a Smackdown! superstar. Gunner Scott's toughness took
Finlay by surprise here and it clearly frustrated him that this was not an easy
match. In order to regain control in this match, Finlay decided to go for his
shillelagh but the referee noticed it and the two fought over it. Meanwhile,
Mr. Kennedy got up from his ringside chair, folded it and hit Gunner Scott with
it on the outside of the ring and followed it up with a DDT onto the chair. Mr.
Kennedy then rolled Gunner Scott back into the ring and took a seat once again
in his chair. Finlay picked up Gunner Scott and executed a Tombstone Piledriver
for the victory.

After the match, Finlay and Mr. Kennedy joined forces to beatdown on the
Smackdown! rookie, Gunner Scott. This brought out Chris Benoit, who was still
smarting from his loss against Mr. Kennedy at WWE MAYhem. Finlay and Mr.
Kennedy left the ring before Chris Benoit could get to them. After Gunner Scott
defeated Booker T back in April, Chris Benoit was one of the first Smackdown!
wrestlers to congratulate him. Now, with Chris Benoit making the save here,
does he think Gunner Scott could be his protege?

Interview:
Smackdown! General Manager announces that neither The Mexicools or Jamie Noble
and Kid Kash are leaving Smackdown! since JBL interfered in their tag team Flag
Match at WWE MAYhem. In a surprise appearance, Mr. McMahon entered Teddy Long's
office. Teddy Long looks worried, but Mr. McMahon says he isn't here to fire
him because frankly Teddy Long has done a good job with such little talent to
work with.

Teddy Long takes issue with this and says that Smackdown! is just as good as
RAW. They just deserve the opportunity to be treated as equals. Mr. McMahon
laughs and says that RAW will always be the number one brand. Because of this,
Mr. McMahon has decided to put Smackdown! up for sale. And starting tonight,
all references to the WWE will not be allowed because Mr. McMahon doesn't want
a joke like Smackdown! being associated with World Wrestling Entertainment.

Mr. McMahon adds that more than likely his son Shane McMahon will be the new
owner of Smackdown!, since he'll likely not accept any other bids, despite
their falling out since WWE Backlash.

The Hooliganz (Paul London and Brian Kendrick) defeated MNM (Joey Mercury and
Johnny Nitro) when P. London pinned Nitro after the Get Well Soon in 0:11:26.
Rating: *** 1/2

Pretty Cool watched this match from on the ramp. At WWE MAYhem, MNM retained
their World Tag Team Titles after Chavo Guerrero turned his back on Rey
Mysterio while The Hooliganz were unable to defeat Pretty Cool. This was a big
opportunity for The Hooliganz to make an impact in the tag team division by
defeating the reigning World Tag Team Champions. The Hooliganz rebounded nicely
from their loss to Pretty Cool and got the victory over the World Tag Team
Champions when Brian Kendrick and Paul London hit Johnny Nitro with their tag
team finisher, Get Well Soon.

After the match, The Hooliganz celebrated their victory while MNM looked on in
shock in the ring. On the ramp, Pretty Cool pointed and laughed at MNM and made
a motion around their waists that they want the World Tag Team Championship
belts.

Interview:
Chavo Guerrero explains his actions against Rey Mysterio at WWE MAYhem. Chavo
Guerrero says that Rey Mysterio let the entire Guerrero Family down with all
the dedications he made to Eddie Guerrero, only to keep losing every match
where he made a dedication. It was an insult not only to the Guerrero Family
but to Eddie Guerrero's memory as well. Chavo says that the fact is that Eddie
Guerrero didn't like Rey Mysterio at all. He certainly wouldn't have liked the
fact that Rey Mysterio used Eddie Guerrero to get a world heavyweight title
shot at WrestleMania after he lost it to Randy Orton at No Way Out.

Chavo Guerrero says that it is too bad Rey Mysterio had to be a loser and
insult the Guerrero Family. He has no doubt that they could've defeated MNM and
become the World Tag Team Champions. Chavo says that Rey Mysterio has himself
to blame for that. Chavo concludes by saying that Rey Mysterio better not
return to Smackdown! after what he did after their tag team match at WWE
MAYhem. If Rey Mysterio decides to return to Smackdown!, Chavo vows to injure
him and make him pay for insulting the Guerrero Family and his uncle Eddie
Guerrero.

The Road Warrior defeated Tatanka by disqualification in 0:05:21.
Rating: -1/2*
[Matt Hardy interfered against The Road Warrior.]

Matt Hardy made his return from his ankle injury and attacked The Road Warrior,
which caused the disqualification. Matt Hardy brought a chair into the ring and
slammed it against The Road Warrior's head. Then, Matt Hardy picked The Road
Warrior up and executed the Twist of Fate onto the chair.

Interview:
The Great Khali and his manager, Daivari, put over what they did to Bobby
Lashley at WWE MAYhem and how they ruined his opportunity to become the King of
the Ring. Daivari says that if The Great Khali can overpower such wrestlers
like The Undertaker and Bobby Lashley, there is no one on Smackdown! that can
stop him from ruling the Smackdown! brand as the Phenom.

Batista pinned Sylvan with the Batista Bomb in 0:06:47.
Rating: *

Before the match, Sylvan berated the fans for their looks and said that they
were all jealous of his charming looks and his supermodel girlfriends. Sylvan
was interupted by none other than Batista, in his wrestling gear, who received
a huge reaction from the fans! Batista made his way to the ring to confront
Sylvan, who looked worried to say the least. Batista didn't hesitate and went
right for Sylvan. This match wasn't even a contest as Batista dominated from
the beginning of the match until he hit a massive spinebuster slam and followed
it up with the Batista Bomb for the victory.

Interview:
Booker T and Sharmell celebrate their King of the Ring coronation. Sharmell
declares that Booker T is now to be hailed as Royal T!

Randy Orton pinned Kurt Angle with the RKO in 0:17:52.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Randy Orton won the World Heavyweight Title.)

Considering that Randy Orton insisted on making this a no disqualification
match, it seemed to indicate that Randy Orton had some kind of plan that would
include outside interference. However, no one could've ever imagined that the
person Randy Orton would turn to for help would be none other than Scott
Steiner
!

In this match, it looked as if Randy Orton was going to lose once again via the
Ankle Lock. After hitting the Angle Slam, Kurt Angle applied the Ankle Lock in
the middle of the ring. Through the crowd, Scott Steiner made his way to the
ring, behind Kurt Angle's back. Scott Steiner jumped over the barricade and it
appeared that he had a steel pipe as he entered the ring. From behind, Scott
Steiner hit Kurt Angle across his neck with the steel pipe, which caused Kurt
Angle to let go of the Ankle Lock.

Scott Steiner repeatedly hit Kurt Angle with the steel pipe as Randy Orton
watched with a smile on his face. Scott Steiner picked up Kurt Angle and hit a
belly-to-belly suplex and afterwards, proceeded to do his patented push up taunt
and then left the ring. Kurt Angle slowly got back up to his feet only to be
hit with the RKO from Randy Orton. Randy Orton made the cover and got the three
count pinfall victory. Randy Orton is the new World Heavyweight Champion thanks
to Scott Steiner! As Smackdown! went off the air, Randy Orton celebrated his
second World Heavyweight Championship as the fans were left to wonder what
Scott Steiner was doing on Smackdown! as he is not employed with the WWE.

The whole opening angle and main event were very well done.  I certainly didn't expect a World Title change tonight.

I'm still not sold on Gunner Scott, and this isn't your doing but rather how WWE brought him in.  The name sucks, for one.  Brent Albright is such a cooler name.  Let's see what you can do.

Hrm... Smackdown up for sale, eh?  That's very interesting.

Chavo's reasoning for turning on Rey is good, and this should lead to a great feud.

Royal T?  Meh.

BATISTA~~~~!!!! He's one of the guys that I really should despite, but I'm a big fan.  Glad to see him back.

Good show, mate.
HugeRockStar760Posted on 05/13/06 at 07:42:22

It is a pretty stupid name, huh? I probably should've gone with Brent Albright, but in my infinite (or lack thereof) wisdom, I decided to go with the WWE.

If anything, I should've just not had him appear on Smackdown!, but instead be included in the new ECW brand. Considering the Punk/Albright feud in OVW, those two could transition nicely in an ECW kind of environment.

I like the Chavo turn too, but I dislike how it continues the mentioning of Eddie Guerrero. But it fits in well with a Chavo/Rey feud and some parallels from the Eddie/Rey feud.

Batista is definitely one of my favorites. He's basically the definition of what a champion should be (injury prone being excluded though). You just look at him and he has the look of a champion.

How can you NOT be a fan of Queen Sharmell and Royal T? I mean, Royal T, King of the Ring...get it? Yeah....I actually think the WWE will swerve everyone and have Booker T win the King of the Ring over Bobby Lashley...And I thought maybe The Great Khali would be the reason, but he'll be too busy with The Undertaker at Judgment Day. The Great Khali can only have feuds with certain kind of wrestlers so I'm not sure how much longer he can be booked on Smackdown! Wrestling.
Snabbit888Posted on 05/13/06 at 07:57:04

From what I've read, Great Khali might be cut loose right after Judgment Day because he's downright inept in the ring.   So it's not an altogether bad idea.

It's hard to book someone like The Great Khali as well. Once he loses a match cleanly, he definitely will lose any kind of phenom aura. A wrestler like him needs to be booked as unstoppable, otherwise it's not believable. I'll probably take a cue from the WWE, and either release him or have a talent exchange storyline with the RAW brand, since The Undertaker was traded there, so there is a built in storyline there (even though, at this point I haven't taken control of the RAW brand).
MatteusPosted on 05/16/06 at 16:30:24

Just started reading recently, but I've had an eye on your circuit for a little while, so I shall say what I can. Expect more in-depth feedback with time :)

Looks like your tag division is pretty strong, and should def flourish with time. I like Masters and Carlito as a team good enough, but my selfishnes hopes they'll break up down the road. And duh, MNM is teh awesomeness! Too bad they lost. But they have the gold still so I forgive it.

I like the Chavo turn. Quite unfortunately, Eddie's death has the ability to serve as a great motivator and stepping stone for Chavo no matter how you book it.

Not a Khali fan, but I'll be interested to see how you're able to book him.

Good to see batista back. Angle/Batista would rock my socks.

Oy, Royal T? I'm not sold... hopefully it's temporary like "Macho King" Randy Savage.

Interesting choice going with Scott Steiner to continue his hired gun TNA role on Smackdown. I'm not a Steiner fan in the ring, but the character is always decent, so I likes it. Orton as the new champ... is Batista next in line for a shot? :)

Nice show overall, I'll be reading!
HugeRockStar760Posted on 05/16/06 at 21:53:41

I get a sense that there are not too many Royal T fans here. So much for me being corny with my King Booker gimmick.

As for Scott Steiner, it might be a reach, but with the way storylines are ongoing with the Smackdown! sale, it was necessary. Besides, even if in reality Scott Steiner says all negative things about the WWE, if they were to offer him a lot of money and a good storyline to come back to, he'd likely leave TNA instantly.

I've always been a Big Poppa Pump mark for some reason. And when he was here in San Diego with Stacy Keibler for an autograph session, he treated everyone nicely and was personable. He even talked to me about the WWE and how everything was politics. So that went a long way and he's definitely not as bad as marks make him out to be, at least personality wise.
MatteusPosted on 05/16/06 at 21:57:55

The only reason people hate Steiner really is that he's as good a wrestler as a sack of hammers in the ring. I love Scott Steiner the character, so I can't wait.

King Booker? THAT'S not a bad name. I like King Booker, personally. Much much much better than Royal T.

Snabbit888Posted on 05/16/06 at 22:15:43

It's not the gimmick itself that's the problem.  Royal T is just a crappy name. :)  I agree with Matteus that King Booker, though simple, works great.
MatteusPosted on 05/16/06 at 22:27:08

Although I had a personal fun moment when you said Sharmell introduced Royal T and I actually imagined Sharmell way overselling the introduction as only she can ("Royaaaaal Teeeeeeeeeee!") and laughed my ass off at work ;)
