WWE WrestleMania XXII
Date: April 2, 2006
Location: Chicago, IL

Triple Threat Tag Team Match:
MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) defeated The Hooliganz (Paul London and
Brian Kendrick) and The Mexicools (Super Crazy and Psicosis) when Mercury
pinned Psicosis after the Snapshot in 0:04:18.
Rating: ***
(MNM retained the World Tag Team Titles.)

This match was added just a few days ago on Smackdown! after MNM complained
about being left out of WrestleMania XXII at that point. However, since The
Hooliganz and Mexicools ended their match in a double countout, Teddy Long
decided to make this match a triple threat match. As advertised by Teddy Long,
this was definitely an appropriate way to open WrestleMania.

The Boogeyman pinned Booker T with the Supernatural Driver in 0:14:15.
Rating: ** 1/2

For weeks, The Boogeyman has stalked Booker T and his wife Sharmell on
Smackdown! Booker T was reluctant to take this match but under pressure from
Smackdown! General Manager Teddy Long and to defend the honor of Sharmell,
accepted the match. The Boogeyman made a grand entrance on the grandest stage
of them all, WrestleMania. Due to his entrance and his natural charisma, The
Boogeyman was the clear fan favorite here tonight. Booker T did an admirable
job of going one on one against The Boogeyman, as he took the match to the
outside to brawl with him. However, much like that chairshot on Smackdown! on
Friday night, nothing really phased The Boogeyman for too long in this match,
which frustrated Booker T. Booker T did score more offense on Booker T than JBL
was able to at the Royal Rumble, but it wasn't enough to defeat The Boogeyman.
As Booker T went for the Axe Kick, Boogeyman grabbed Booker T before he could
make contact and hit a chokeslam. From there, The Boogeyman hit the Supernatural
Driver and got the three count. Afterwards, The Boogeyman grabbed some worms out
of his pockets and dropped them on Booker T as a terrified Sharmell watched on
the outside of the ring.

Mickie James pinned Trish Stratus with the Tornado DDT in 0:05:52.
Rating: * 3/4
(Mickie James won the WWE Women's Title.)

For months, Trish Stratus and Mickie James have had a tenuous friendship at
best. At Saturday Night's Main Event, the friendship ended with a Mick Kick and
a declaration that Mickie James was going after the WWE Women's Championship,
which Trish has held for over a year. That reign is now over as Mickie James
defeated her former idol, Trish Stratus after hitting her with a Tornado DDT.

Carlito and Chris Masters defeated Kane and The Big Show when C. Masters
defeated Show when Show passed out in the Masterlock in 0:02:17.
Rating: ***
(Carlito and Chris Masters won the WWE World Tag Team Titles.)

Kane and The Big Show have held the WWE World Tag Team Titles since November of
2005 and haven't had any team mount any kind of serious challenge for the
belts. Their challengers tonight, Carlito and Chris Masters, were another one
of those teams that had a lot of promise, but no one gave them much of a chance
entering this event. A big reason was due to their miscommunication problems
they've had for months. However, tonight, they surprised the champions, who
maybe did not take this match as seriously as they should've. The result? New
WWE World Tag Team Champions in Carlito and Chris Masters! However, this ending
of this match was hardly immune from controversy. While Carlito and Kane were
on the outside of the ring, with the referee distracted, Chris Masters threw
powder in the eyes of The Big Show. Unlike last week, Chris Masters was able to
lock in the Masterlock as The Big Show was stunned from the powder in his eyes.
The referee turned his attention back to the ring and asked The Big Show if he
was going to submit. Meanwhile, Carlito prevented Kane from helping his tag
team partner out by slamming a chair to his right leg continually. With the
Masterlock firmly locked in place on The Big Show in the center of the ring, he
passed out. You have to believe that Kane and The Big Show will be looking for
retribution against the new WWE World Tag Team Champions.

Interview:
The 2006 Hall of Fame class is introduced to the Chicago crowd. One by one the
Hall of Famers walk out, and the mention of Eddie Guerrero and the appearance
of his nephew Chavo receives a huge pop and tons of "EDDIE" chants. When Bret
Hart was announced, curiously, he was nowhere to be found, which received a
chorus of boos. The theme music for Bret Hart is stopped and out walks Vince
McMahon to a massive amount of boos and "WE WANT BRET" chants. Vince McMahon
said that he wanted Bret to show up at WrestleMania as well. But apparently,
Bret Hart just couldn't take the pressure of WrestleMania. Vince lets it be
known that Bret Hart isn't the same man we remember from 1997 when Vince
screwed Bret Hart out of the WWE Championship. Bret Hart suffered a stroke, and
isn't the same man since that happened. Also, Bret Hart refusing to show up
tonight at WrestleMania shows that he is a liar and most importantly a
hypocrite. Bret Hart gave the WWE his word that he would show up on the pay per
view tonight. Instead, he is in Calgary being a miserable son of a bitch. Vince
said that Bret's actions here tonight validated what he did back in 1997 by
screwing Bret Hart and sending him to WCW. Vince knows Bret will be watching
WrestleMana and is listening to what he is saying. Vince sends a message to
Bret Hart that tonight, history will repeat itself. Vince McMahon screwed Shawn
Michaels at Saturday Night's Main Event, and he will do it again tonight at
WrestleMania!

Chris Benoit defeated John Bradshaw Layfield via pinfall in 0:08:24.
Rating: ** 1/2
(Chris Benoit retained the United States Heavyweight Title.)

This match featured two former World Champions. The United States Heavyweight
title reigns of Chris Benoit have really elevated that title on Smackdown!
Recently, this match picked up steam after Chris Benoit broke JBL's hand. JBL
was also looking for revenge after Chris Benoit helped Steve Austin embarass
him on Saturday Night's Main Event. This was an impressive match that was as
hard hitting as it gets. Chris Benoit retained the title, despite the attempted
interference from JBL's image consultant, Jillian Hall. In fact, her last
attempt at interference backed fired on JBL. Jillian Hall tried to connect with
a chairshot to Chris Benoit, but he moved out of the way and she instead hit
JBL with the chair accidentally! Chris Benoit made the pinfall and retained the
United States Heavyweight Title.

Casket Match:
The Undertaker defeated Mark Henry in 0:11:28.
Rating: * 1/4

Entering this match, The Undertaker entered WrestleMania XXII with a staggering
13-0 record. The latest challenger, Mark Henry, entered this match having taken
out the former World Heavyweight Champion, Batista, and holding a pinfall over
the current World Heavyweight Champion, Kurt Angle. This was no ordinary match,
though. No, it wasn't a wrestling match. It was a Casket Match. This match
pointed to a clear advantage going to The Undertaker, not to mention the
spectre of WrestleMania and the undefeated streak of The Undertaker at this
event. However, if Mark Henry was intimidated by The Undertaker, he didn't show
it. Despite his confidence, Mark Henry could not become the first wrestler to
defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania. In the end, The Undertaker hit a
Tombstone Piledriver on Mark Henry and put him into the Casket and slammed the
lid shut to win the match.

Money in the Bank Ladder Match:
Rob Van Dam defeated Shelton Benjamin, Ric Flair, Bobby Lashley, Finlay and Matt
Hardy in 0:24:30.
Rating: *** 1/4

After The Road Warrior injured Matt Hardy on Smackdown! two days ago, most
believed there was no way Matt Hardy would even show up to WrestleMania XXII,
much less participate in the Money in the Bank match. However, he did and
credit that to Matt Hardy's drive and determination. Obviously, though, Matt
Hardy's injured right ankle hindered him through the match. What he did to
remain in the match was to simply stay out of the way of the other five
competitors, who were too concerned about grabbing the briefcase to notice Matt
Hardy.

The feud between Bobby Lashley and Finlay on Smackdown! has been one of the
most intense in recent history in the WWE. With both being involved in this
match, it was an opportunity for the two to get their hands on each other.
These two went right for each other at every opportunity. A lot of people
thought Finlay was out of his element in this match. Considering the kind of
brawler Finlay is, giving him a weapon like a ladder seems exactly right for
him. He made use of the ladder quite a few times. At one point, Bobby Lashley
attempted to give a spear to Finlay, but Finlay managed to hold the ladder up
and block the attempt, whiched knocked Bobby Lashley silly. Later on, Bobby
Lashley would get retribution on Finlay when he hit the Dominator from on top
of the ladder and down to the mat, which effectively took out Finlay and took
Lashley out as both men were out cold.

Ric Flair was also considered to be out of his element in this match. While he
had a decent showing against Edge in a losing effort in a Ladder Match, it's
still not what he's most effective at, which is mainly a straight up one on one
wrestling match. However, he held his own in this match. However, with him not
being too familiar with his surroundings, he was unaware of Rob Van Dam climbing
the ladder as Ric Flair was on the top rope about to hit a kneedrop onto Shelton
Benjamin. Amazingly, Rob Van Dam surprised Ric Flair and everyone by hitting a
Van Terminator from the ladder to Ric Flair on the top turnbuckle. The move
knocked Ric Flair out of the ring and to the mat out cold.

The interesting dual that started to develop was between Shelton Benjamin and
Rob Van Dam. Shelton Benjamin was thought to be the favorite in this match as he
was the only one with any prior experience in the Money in the Bank. Shelton
nearly won the Money in the Bank last year and had that memorable spot where he
catapulted himself onto the ladder to clothesline Chris Jericho to the mat.
These two used their athleticism and quickness against each other. With Ric
Flair, Finlay, and Lashley basically out of contention, the match came down to
Shelton Benjamin, Rob Van Dam, and Matt Hardy, who sat in the corner of the ring
grabbing his ankle in agony. So in essence, the match really came down to
Shelton Benjamin and Rob Van Dam to see who would become the 2006 Money in the
Bank winner. The two would start to climb on the ladder on opposite sides. Once
to the top, the two exchanged punches, and each tried their best to grab the
briefcase. However, unknown to them, Matt Hardy had gotten back up and pushed
the ladder. The result was Rob Van Dam landing hard on the mat and Shelton
Benjamin landing on the ropes, and the momentum knocked him out of the ring.

The crowd were on their feet cheering the underdog Matt Hardy, who shouldn't
even be competing tonight. Matt Hardy, who is already hobbled by that broken
right ankle, set the ladder up and began his march to the top of the ladder.
With his broken right ankle, it wasn't going to happen quickly. However, when
Matt Hardy was within reaching distance of grabbing the briefcase, The Road
Warrior ran down to the ring and entered it. The Road Warrior smiled at Matt
Hardy and pushed the ladder down, knocking Matt Hardy out cold to the mat. The
Chicago WrestleMania crowd, which is The Road Warrior's hometown, booed him
loudly. It surprised The Road Warrior at first, but he didn't care as he had
other plans in store. The Road Warrior picked up the ladder and set it up
underneath the briefcase. The Road Warrior began to slowly climb the ladder.
What is he doing? He's not involved in this match. The Road Warrior was also
within reaching distance when he received a shock. Rob Van Dam, having recovered
enough to climb on the top turnbuckle, hit a dropkick to the ladder and knocked
it and The Road Warrior to the mat. Rob Van Dam made his way to the ladder and
set it up. Rob Van Dam climbed the ladder and grabbed the briefcase
successfully! Rob Van Dam has won the Money in the Bank match and with it, has a
guaranteed shot at either the WWE Title or the World Heavyweight Title and it is
good for a year.

Hardcore Match:
Edge pinned Mick Foley with the Spear in 0:17:40.
Rating: *****

Edge blames the fact he is not the WWE Champion right now solely on Mick Foley.
This match was made so Edge could prove to Mick Foley that he has no business
being considered one of the greatest WWE superstars. Over the past few months,
Mick Foley has turned from the usual good natured author of books to his past
hardcore wrestling persona of Cactus Jack. Saturday Night's Main Event provided
a preview of what we would see in this match: barbed wire, flaming tables,
tacks, baseball bats. And all of those were used in this match. Mick Foley
truly did live up to his nickname of the "Hardcore Icon" as he showed Edge the
meaning of hardcore. However, it was Edge that would get the win after using
the hardcore style to his advantage. Mick Foley had set up a table in the
corner of the ring and put barbed wire all over it. Mick Foley attempted to
whip Edge into that table, but Edge countered the move into an Edgeuction. Edge
put Mick Foley by the table and then hit a spear on Mick Foley through the
table! Edge went for the cover and got the three count. Edge continues his
winning ways at WrestleMania, with this perhaps being his biggest win in his
career at WrestleMania.

No Holds Barred Match:
Shawn Michaels defeated Mr. McMahon by pinfall in 0:19:13.
Rating: ** 1/2

With this match being No Holds Barred, it was the perfect opportunity for Shawn
Michaels and Vince McMahon to try and destroy the other man. For weeks, these two
have been feuding and it all began simply with Shawn Michaels telling Vince
McMahon to move on from the 1997 Survivor Series incident with Bret Hart. The
match ended curiously as a man in a mask came down to the ring with a steel
chair. When he entered it, Shawn Michaels had just hit Vince McMahon with Sweet
Chin Music. When Shawn Michaels turned around he was met with a chairshot from
this unknown person. Vince McMahon began to stir and got himself back to his
feet and looked at the masked man who was holding a chair and he saw Shawn
Michaels lying on the mat out cold. Vince McMahon connected the dots and a
smile came to his face. Vince McMahon began shouting that he knew it, he knew
this masked man was on his side all along. However, to Vince's surprise, the
masked man knocked him out cold with a chairshot of his own. The masked man
then put Shawn Michaels on top of Vince McMahon and left the ring. The referee
made the three count, giving Shawn Michaels another WrestleMania win, thanks to
the assistance of this masked man. The question is, just who was the masked
man, and why was Vince McMahon so sure he was on his side?

Triple H pinned John Cena with the Pedigree in 0:31:56.
Rating: *****
(Triple H won the WWE Title.)

For weeks, Triple H has taken a lackadaiscal approach to this match. A match
that he was challenging for the WWE Championship against John Cena, Triple H
acted as if the result of this match was a foregone conclusion and that he
would take back what was rightfully his. The WWE Champion, John Cena, has gone
through a rough period in his WWE career as the fans have been booing him at
every opportunity available. The Chicago crowd was no different as they booed
him at the beginning of the match and cheered Triple H. Considering how much
Triple H is usually disliked, this obviously irritated the WWE Champion as he
surveyed the crowd with a look of disdain on his face. Much to Triple H's
surprise, this would not be a walk over for him over John Cena. This was
clearly obvious as the match went past 25 minutes. John Cena looked determined
and showed a fire we haven't seen from him in quite a long time in the WWE.
Inevitably, this match had a referee bump after Triple H inadvertently knocked
into the referee after Triple H whipped John Cena off the ropes to attempt a
flying clothesline. Triple H looked down at the referee and this distraction
allowed for John Cena to surprise him with the F-U! John Cena went for the pin,
but the referee was barely getting up from earlier. John Cena got back up and
shook the referee until he came to. The groggy referee did get back up and John
Cena went back to Triple H, who was still on the mat. John Cena picked Triple H
up and tried another F-U, but Triple H countered and surprised John Cena with
the Pedigree to get the three count and the WWE Championship! The crowd cheered
the new WWE Champion, Triple H, while a stunned John Cena just looked on.

After the match, John Cena grabbed his chain necklace and put it around his
neck and acted like he was going to leave and allow the new WWE Champion,
Triple H, celebrate his 11th world championship. However, John Cena turned
around and entered the ring. He confronted the new champion, but extended his
hand out. Triple H accepted the handshake and even told John Cena he was wrong
about him, and that he wrestled one of best matches tonight. John Cena thanked
Triple H and went to leave but stopped. With Triple H's back to him, John Cena
took off his steel chain necklace and hit Triple H in the back of the neck with
it! The crowd booed John Cena and this time, he just didn't care. John Cena has
snapped! John Cena picked Triple H up and hit him in the face with the
necklace! This was supposed to be Triple H's victory celebration, but John Cena
had other plans. John Cena went to the outside of the ring and grabbed a steel
chair. John Cena attacked Triple H with the chair. John Cena set the chair up
in the sitting position. Then, John Cena picked Triple H up and hit the F-U
onto the chair! Triple H is out cold while John Cena stood over the new
champion grinning as the crowd boos him. John Cena demanded the microphone and
told the crowd that he finally gave the crowd a reason to boo him. He has one
message for everyone and that he already gave it to Triple H: F-U!

Triple Threat Match:
Kurt Angle defeated Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio when K. Angle made Mysterio
submit to the Ankle Lock in 0:36:06.
Rating: *****
(Kurt Angle retained the World Heavyweight Title.)

Rey Mysterio won the 2006 Royal Rumble match and earned a guaranteed world
title shot at the main event of WrestleMania XXII. However, the arrogant Randy
Orton stole the title shot away from Rey Mysterio at No Way Out. But thanks for
the generosity of Smackdown! General Manager, Teddy Long, Rey Mysterio was
given another shot to face the World Heavyweight Champion, Kurt Angle, and
Randy Orton in a Triple Threat Match. Rey Mysterio was the definite long shot
in this match, even with his Royal Rumble victory. However, Rey Mysterio
didn't look like an underdog in this match. He kept this match going with high
energy and fast paced action. Kurt Angle was able to keep up with Mysterio as
the two have wrestled previously in the past few years, however, Randy Orton
seemed to have trouble dealing with Rey Mysterio's high flying antics. This
match also featured many near falls, which were near falls due to the third
man being in the match. The big rallying point of this match was that Rey
Mysterio wanted to win this match to honor the late Eddie Guerrero, while
Randy Orton wanted to redeem himself from his first, disappointing title
reign, while Kurt Angle just wanted to prove to everyone that no one can beat
the wrestling machine. The ending of this match was not surprising in that it
mimicked the entire match: it was a fast paced, exciting finish. Randy Orton
had just thrown Rey Mysterio out of the ring and to the mat. Randy Orton had
Kurt Angle setup for the RKO, but Kurt Angle pushed off and attempted the
Angle Slam. Randy Orton slipped through the Angle Slam, and attempted to
counter back with the RKO but all of a sudden Rey Mysterio jumps off the top
turnbuckle with a West Coast Pop. On the other side of Rey Mysterio was Kurt
Angle, who took advantage by hitting the Angle Slam, and quickly followed it
with the Ankle Lock in the middle of the ring. Rey Mysterio tried his best to
get out of the move, but he was unable to and submitted to the move, as a
groggy Randy Orton was unable to break the submission hold.

After the match, the crowd gives a standing ovation to not just Kurt Angle,
but Rey Mysterio. Also, Eddie Guerrero's family enter the ring and all hug Rey
Mysterio. Kurt Angle seemed moved by the overwhelming show of emotion and in a
true sign of respect for the Guerrero family, handed Vickie Guerrero the World
Heavyweight Championship. The crowd chanted "EDDIE" as Kurt Angle hugged Rey
Mysterio, Vickie Guerrero, and Chavo Guerrero.

Interview:
After The Guerrero Family, Rey Mysterio, and Kurt Angle leave the ring, Vince
McMahon walks out to a chorus of boos from the crowd. Vince McMahon says
WrestleMania is not ending until the masked man that cost him his match against
Shawn Michaels makes his identity known tonight, right now. After a few moments,
a masked man does indeed walk down the aisle and into the ring.

Vince McMahon begins to berate the masked man and demands he unmask himself. The
masked man doesn't so Vince McMahon begins making some wild guesses to who the
masked man could be. Eric Bischoff? The Ultimate Warrior? Hulk Hogan? Goldberg?
What about Ted Turner? He's out of the wrasslin' business and also out of Time
Warner, maybe he's looking for some revenge himself against Vince McMahon. And
it seems Vince has convinced himself that he believes it is Eric Bischoff. Vince
begins to berate who he thinks is Eric Bischoff and says that the time for
payback should've came back in 2001, when Eric Bischoff should've had enough
business sense to buy WCW, but he didn't. So then Vince McMahon hired Eric
Bischoff just to fire him. Vince is so sure the masked man is Eric Bischoff that
he says he will turn his back to him and let the masked man unmask himself.

Vince turns his back to the masked man, and it seems the idea has worked. The
masked man slowly removes his mask, and he receives one of the loudest pops in
WrestleMania history. When Vince McMahon turns around, he is met by Bret Hart!
Vince McMahon is in shock and he can't move, he's too afraid to do anything. Bret
punches Vince and beats him up thoroughly before applying the Sharpshooter to
him. In the back, many of the heel wrestlers try to go help Vince, but the face
wrestlers block the entranceway. Bret Hart lets go of the Sharpshooter and goes
to the outside of the ring and grabs a chair. He brings it back into the ring
and repeatedly hits Vince McMahon in the legs with it. He then takes Vince to
one of the corners and applies a Figure Four Leglock around the turnbuckle! The
crowd loves it! Bret lets go of the hold and he grabs a microphone. Bret says
that tonight, the final chapter has been written in the entire saga between
Vince McMahon, Shawn Michaels, and Bret Hart. Bret thanks the fans for
everything and all the support they gave him when he was wrestling and now in
his retirement. Bret Hart's theme music plays and he poses around the ring for
the fans as the show comes to a close.

A few of those matches were dead on the spot.
HugeRockStar760Posted on 04/03/06 at 17:24:08

Yeah, but the glaring difference is that there was no Bret Hart appearance. :-( Of note, my circuit's WrestleMania had 3 five star matches, which I've never had before, but considering the participants, wasn't surprising.

Although, I didn't think Cena had it in him to deliver a five star match either. I also think the WWE should've turned him full fledged heel like I did. He's not a face, no matter how hard the WWE tries to convince themselves of it.

When Howard Finkel said Bret Hart wasn't appearing, I thought my circuit's WrestleMania was going to mimic the real WrestleMania, but I guess Bret really was uncomfortable with appearing.

I personally think John Cena drew more heel heat VS. face heat and think WWE was stupid for trying to fix something that was never broken, to start with. McMahon wanted to shove John Cena as a face, down our throats, and it backfired.

Just like it happened with Mickey James... she got more pops than Trish Stratus.

Same way with Steve Austin. Austin was a heel, no matter how you slice it. He didn't do anything different to Bret Hart than he did to Shawn Michaels

That's how the real thing should have gone down!  Well, except for Kurt Angle retaining, of course, but then again, any of them winning would have been fine with me (I just thought Rey Mysterio was the best booking choice, on the assumption that Rob Van Dam would cash in his money in the bank at the ECW PPV to face him for the belt) . . . Anyway, yeah, your version would have been much more worth the price of admission than the nonsense Vince put on!  Absolutely fantastic card, man!

Thank you. And yes, I thought about Rey Mysterio winning the match, but right now, I just don't buy him as a World Heavyweight Champion. Even though, in the WWE it'll be RVD vs. Rey probably, I think One Night Stand would be better served by a RVD/Angle match for the World Heavyweight Title.

And the Bret Hart appearance was just an ideal view of what I thought would've been nice to have seen. To me, it would've been a way to put an end to the whole Vince/Bret/HBK nonsense.
rey619Posted on 04/04/06 at 21:35:20

Angle vs RVD at ONS had made sense as well, at least if they had played the fact that Angle once left an ECW event..

Wow there are some huge similarities to WWE's WM22 here, was this all determined by TNM?

I had a Bret Hart like situation in my WLOW Circuit (not advertising haha) Bret Hart lost a championship match, then quit right after that event, So maybe he was screwed over again?

No, I booked this card and as you can tell from the time this card was posted, it was before the actual WrestleMania card. There are some similarities, but the actual winners compared to who I had win the matches are pretty much different.

A lot of the angles (Cena and HHH double turn, Bret Hart returns to end the HBK/Bret/Vince saga) had a small chance of happening, but I decided to book them since it made sense to me.

Also, in my TNM, Randy Orton did not act like an ass, thus, he was not being de-pushed. However, he still lost the match. And while I like Rey Mysterio, I felt like Kurt Angle winning and then honoring the Guerrero Family with the World Heavyweight Title belt after the match was a nice WrestleMania moment too.

But there are some similarities, but I'm sure anyone could've predicted those matches the same way. :-)
