TNA Signs Pacman Jones

suicidalbynaturePosted on 07/30/07 at 06:52:09

Late last week TNA Wrestling signed suspended Tennessee Titan cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones to a contract that will see the NFL star perform as a wrestler. Jones is currently suspended for the entire 2007 NFL season, without pay, for personal conduct problems off of the field. Under his suspension, Jones is not allowed to attend the Tennessee Titans' training camp. He is currently trying to get his suspension reduced to 10-games. Reportedly the Titans has no issue with Jones getting involved in professional wrestling.
Discuss.

I guess TNA believes no publicity is bad publicity. But considering the negative attention wrestling is already getting from the mainstream media, this won't go over too well either.

Considering all the incidents Pacman Jones has gotten into, especially the Las Vegas incident, I really don't understand the reasoning for doing this. Not to mention, TNA only has one hour. Why not sign a ROH wrestler or another independent wrestler and push them? Or maybe just push someone from the TNA roster instead of giving that spot to a football player?

I read that it wasn't a Vince Russo idea but it has Vince Russo all over it.
The EmpressPosted on 07/30/07 at 12:38:38

I don't even know who the hell this guy is.  Like HRS said, why didn't they just bring up someone from ROH who can actually wrestle and will probably be recognized just as much?  Especially if the guy is already known for causing trouble, this is way retarded.

Are they hoping this guy's the next Goldberg or something?  Ha!
lazy duckPosted on 07/30/07 at 13:58:30

Goldberg...No He is no where as big as Goldberg, He played Cornerback for the Titans.

pszPosted on 07/30/07 at 14:08:15

He's quick, he's in shape, and he can hit hard if needed.

Sounds great on paper.

He's been arrested six times(!) since being drafted, and a few of those times involved someone being shot.

I'm never usually a fan of "celeb" matches anyway, but THIS is just a bad idea from start to finish.
AllPowerfulGARTHPosted on 07/30/07 at 14:10:30

Awwwww shit, here comes Pacman.
rebelins313Posted on 07/30/07 at 15:46:06

Terrible idea.   Pacman Jones is an idiot with loads of talent.  TNA makes terrible decisions, both booking and business related and this just adds to the pile.

Not to mention, the whole point of being suspended from the NFL for the year is to teach him a lesson. TNA signing him and giving money that could've gone to actual wrestlers just sends a lousy message that TNA doesn't care.
suicidalbynaturePosted on 07/30/07 at 16:29:38

Maybe when he makes his entrance into the impact zone he will "make it rain" by throwing $80,000 in small bills at the crowd and then demanding that he gets all of the money back. This is why I despise TNA.
JakePosted on 07/30/07 at 17:21:45

Soooooooooo, how long until the WWE tries signing him away?

It does?  It takes more than being fit, being in shape, and being able to hit hard to be a professional wrestler.

He won't be wrestling unfortunately, which means TNA will not become my favorite wrestling promotion ever.

A stable of Pacman, Vick, Tank and someone from the Bengals roster would be > Horsemen.

How morally superior you must feel!
JustinPosted on 08/03/07 at 11:34:01

Jimmy Hart, who almost never says anything negative about anybody in wrestling, lashed out again the Pacman Jones to TNA deal. Hart said, "Pacman Jones?! Are you freakin' kidding me? Oh, my. It's over [for TNA]. Not Pacman Jones! They're desperate, man. They've lost their minds. After what's happened to Vince [McMahon] and stuff -- Why?"

Nah. I just hate pricks who think they can and should get away with things that you or I would be put UNDER the jail for ;->

(Unfortunately, that's about 95% of Pro Atheletes and Actors in the US V_V)

Pacman Jones = Lawrence Taylor??

Oh, and simply awesome reference, Garth.

Pacman Jones will never be able to fill Lawrence Taylor's shoes on the turf or in the ring. Mark my words.

He might be the second coming of Dennis "Falling Down Drunk in the Ring" Rodman, though.
Rick GarrardPosted on 08/07/07 at 05:39:26

ESPN Radio gave an entire 15 minute segment to Pacman and TNA tonight.  The guy filling in for Doug Gottleib is a huge wrestling fan and knew what he was talking about.
CrplsPosted on 08/07/07 at 07:16:34

According to TNA, he WILL be wrestling.

YES. A THOUSAND TIMES YES.

(If TNA is good for anything, it's massive LOL.)

Oh, and how can Pacman actually wrestle? I thought just about every major league athelete has clauses in their contracts that say they can't engage in risky behavior while under contract. Usually it's too prevent stuff like motorcycle accidents... I know pro-wrestling is "fake" and all, but it's still physical and Pacman could potentially get hurt in a match, especially since he doesn't know what he's doing.
CrplsPosted on 08/07/07 at 21:19:04

He has the same clause--and it was reported he wouldn't be wrestling initially. But in the release, TNA said he would be and I believe TNA and his agent are working with the Titans.

The Titans may go along with it because they believe it will keep him out of trouble. (Yes, they believe putting a guy who has issues with drugs in a wrestling lockerroom is a good idea. Don't ask me.)
pszPosted on 08/08/07 at 00:56:59

Yeesh. More brilliance in the world of sports.

And yes, the NFL clause states you cannot compete or participate in any event or activity that can directly lead to injury, hence why the first reports were all for Non-Wrestling.

Now, here's the issue: His contract is not just between him and the Titans, but also him and the NFL (and possibly the NFLPA). So, he'd have to get all the permissions, not just the team to do it.

Then again, the NFL may want him wrestling to keep his Name out there in a non-criminal way for his eventual return.
CrplsPosted on 08/08/07 at 01:07:43

I'm fairly certain the NFL (read: the commissioner's office) would prefer he never comes back at all, at this point. :)

Oh, I'd buy a TNA PPV for Pacman vs He Hate Me.
JustinPosted on 08/12/07 at 02:16:25

ESPN.com is reporting Saturday afternoon that a Tennessee judge has ruled that Adam "Pacman" Jones can appear at TNA's Hard Justice PPV this Sunday in Orlando, Florida at Universal Studios, but he won't be allowed to do anything physical.

The provisions involving Jones' TNA involvement were listed as the following: "The suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback won't be allowed to touch or be touched, use or be hit by any object or anything else that could injure him."

Now the question comes back up...."Why bother?"
CrplsPosted on 08/12/07 at 02:28:56

I hope the Titans go 0-16.

SPOILER ALERT

At tonight's TNA taping, the main event for the September 9th No Surrender PPV was announced. Kurt Angle will make three separate title defenses on the show. He will defend the TNA World Title against Abyss, he will defend the X-Division Title against Jay Lethal, and he will defend the Tag Team Championship against Ron Killings & Pacman Jones.

How is Pacman Jones going to wrestle? We shall see. And to be honest, he likely won't wrestle and we'll see another 'Pacman attacked' angle.

pszPosted on 08/14/07 at 03:03:54

Oh good! We went from one Single Man Tag Team to a Second Single Man Tag Team, and now he'll defend in what can only LEGALLY be a... Single Man Tag Team!

Can somebody hire SuperstarJimiC or Rick Garrard and Fire Russo? Please?

Hell, I'll take Lilla or Empress at this point. Actually, I'd take anyone on these boards (cept Snabbit, of course... That's just... Well, ya know) over Russo.
The EmpressPosted on 08/14/07 at 04:17:56

We could try to raise money to pay Kevin Sullivan to hypnotize the powers that be into hiring me.
Rick GarrardPosted on 08/14/07 at 07:19:33

Thanks for the nod PSZ, but until Panda Energy lets the company run like a wrestling company and not a second tier, poor man's version of the Russo WCW days, TNA will NEVER be anything but a second rate program.

The wrestling and storylines were way more coherent with thought back when they were on weekly PPV and their revenues depended on repeat customers.  Ever since they got the free events in Orlando, TNA has been in the shitter.
CrplsPosted on 08/14/07 at 07:38:35

It may have been better during the weekly period, but it was always in the shitter.
Memphis_VicePosted on 08/29/07 at 22:31:31

I'm surprised no-one has made a Pacman Jones export yet. It'd be real easy. All the moves are 'duck down' and 'side step'. No finisher, no secondary finisher. His desperation move is 'calls in his security team'. His working the crowd string is 'lies there motionless as buyrates slip away'.

Hey, it could be worse again! They could give him with World Title!. Hell at least it would be better than Vince Russo's WCW title reign!

Actually, David Arquette's WCW World Title reign was probably worse than Russo's...
91Posted on 08/30/07 at 18:34:11

I'd say Russo's was far more annoying, he never jobbed the title back (OK, Arquette was never pinned and essentially 'gave the belt away' when he lost it) plus he put the belt on himself for ego reasons in a totally unrealistic fashion (why would Booker just stand there?) while Arquette never wanted the belt.
