TNA Pulls Talent.  Again.

Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/04/07 at 04:51:26

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling informed Ring of Honor today that effective immediately, all TNA contracted talents have been pulled from scheduled and future ROH bookings.

With the departure of Christopher Daniels last week, that would mean that former ROH champions Homicide and Austin Aries are no longer be allowed to appear at Ring of Honor events and are already done with the company.

The expected ROH return of Samoa Joe later this year, which was foreshadowed when Joe defeated current ROH champion Takeshi Morishima the night before Morishima won the title, is also off the books.

TNA made the call after ROH's announcement yesterday that they signed a deal to begin airing taped PPV events on 7/1. The first PPV will be taped on 5/12 in New York City at the Manhattan Center.

TNA sources acknowledged that the decision will likely upset ROH fans, but felt they had no choice after learning about ROH's PPV expansion yesterday via the Internet. There's no word why the pulled talents couldn't appear on matches that wouldn't be aired on the taped PPV events.

ROH booker Gabe Sapolskly declined comment on the situation when contacted this morning, but given the way the ROH storylines have phased out TNA performers, this likely was not an unexpected move.
And...

Earlier today, PWInsider.com noted that TNA had been cracking down on bookings of talents for promotions that featured DVDs of their events sold via third-party retailers. One of those companies were California independent promotion Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, which announced the following today:

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla ends agreement with TNA Wrestling
Los Angeles, CA - Generally, the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (http://www.prowrestlingguerrilla.com) news releases have been light-hearted yet informative, however that will not be the case on this occasion.

Since our humble beginnings in July 2003, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla has booked employees of TNA Wrestling to appear on our shows, in what can only be considered a successful relationship for all parties involved.

Both companies experienced tremendous growth during this time period, admittedly with Pro Wrestling Guerrilla aided infinitely more so by TNA Wrestling than the other way around, and the relationship between the two companies has been affable.

On April 24, 2007, TNA Wrestling presented Pro Wrestling Guerrilla with a contract that would prevent TNA Wrestling employees from appearing on DVDs sold through or distributed by any third parties. Because this would include long-time partner Highspots.com, as of May 3, 2007, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla has severed all ties with TNA Wrestling.

Because of this situation, TNA Wrestling employees Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley will not be appearing at Pro Wrestling Guerrilla's DDT4 Tag Team Title Tournament on May 19 & 20. We at Pro Wrestling Guerrilla would like to apologize to Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin, who along with Frankie Kazarian, were not simply employees, but part of the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla family. We would also like to apologize to Samoa Joe, Low Ki, AJ Styles, and Christopher Daniels, whom we had booked for upcoming Pro Wrestling Guerrilla events. We would also like to thank Homicide, Austin Aries, Petey Williams, and all those previously mentioned for their hard work and professionalism as Pro Wrestling Guerrilla wrestlers.

And most importantly, we would like to apologize to our fans, who have come to enjoy seeing TNA employees both at our live events and on our DVDs. Your appreciation and support gave the TNA employees a chance to wrestle at a level they often time are unable to. We hope you can understand that this was not an easy decision to make, but we did what we feel was best for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla now, and in the future. Later today, we will provide updated information regarding the DDT4 Tag Team Title Tournament, including the last team, more non-tournament matches, and the final DDT4 first round matches!

With TNA's increased schedule (up to 11 live events scheduled for June alone), it's obvious that the company is making efforts towards what they see as protecting their assets, only wanting DVDs featuring their talents to be sold by the promotions themselves, not by outside retailers such as Highspots or Smart Mark Video.

While I can understand why this is going to upset independent wrestling fans, the fact is that if an indy company wants to book TNA contracted talents, they have to abide by TNA's rules to do so. If they don't wish to work by those paramters, they can follow PWG's lead and no longer utilize TNA contracted performers.

In summary, TNA is cracking down on allowing its wrestlers work for major independent promotions for what seems to be 2 reasons.

First, they are worried about either PPV sales or widespread DVD marketing creating competition for them - given the current state of the product creatively, it is perhaps understandable that they wish to nip any further competition in the bud before it can pose a real threat.

Second, they are increasing their touring and house show schedule, and will need their talent available for significantly more dates per month than was previously the case.

Given these two factors, TNA's actions are understandable, if dissappointing.

This answers my question about Austin Aries for sure.  I hadn't realized he actually signed a contract with TNA.  I bet he's wishing he hadn't right about now.

Depends on how much it was for, considering TNA probably pays more. (Though admittedly, it's possible that his TNA-Only contract doesn't financially lives up to the various independant checks he got through the years)

Or perhaps this will be Aries new gimmick... the anti-TNA TNA guy.

I'd bet good money he wouldn't have signed the contract if he knew TNA would be pulling this stunt.

Apparently Austin Aries is releasing a statement regarding his wrestling future on his website next week.  Given the troubles he's had with TNA, I would not be surprised if he requested his release.  TNA has suspended him for a long period of time for the second time in a year, whereas ROH is building him as the leader of a major new stable.  He's also seen as a midcarder at best in TNA, and as a legit Main Eventer in ROH.

Given that TNA is paying him not to wrestle on their own shows and restricting what other shows he can wrestle on, I feel there's a strong chance of Aries looking to ROH for a contract that lets him continue to take high-profile indy bookings.

TNA's crackdown is hard to follow... I work with Maryland Championship Wrestling & Christopher Daniels, Sonjay Dutt, Traci Brooks & Jay Lethal all just worked our last show on July 9. Over the past year's events we've had plenty of TNA talent appear: Team 3D, the James Gang, Rhino, Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin, Jerry Lynn, Petey Williams, Samoa Joe, Homicide & Hernandez and all have appeared on our DVDs... so maybe it's just an ROH thing with TNA.
The TNM Members ChampPosted on 07/22/07 at 18:12:43

TNA won't allow their wrestlers to work in promotions that are moving into pay per view. They view that as being direct competitors to TNA. If MCW were to go into pay per view, TNA would pull their wrestlers from that promotion too.
Rick GarrardPosted on 07/22/07 at 18:30:01

so basically as long as you are not making any money off of the TNA talent appearing on your shows, then you are safe.  But as soon as you make a nickel, then *el bongo* Dubba J with a guitar shot takes away the talent.  :)
Critic of the DawnPosted on 07/22/07 at 18:41:51

More specifically, it's pulling wrestlers from any and all indies that attempt to make money by pay per view or by distributing their DVDs nationally through major retail stores.  So there's a good chance you can still see Styles, Daniels, etc at indies like JAPW and MCW, but if you're a fan of the larger indies like ROH and PWG, you're not going to see them.

I'll bet if any of the companies that do the PPV and/or DVDs were to offer a cut of the revenues to TNA from their sales, TNA would allow their guys to work for them.
JustinPosted on 07/22/07 at 18:57:24

On a side note... I'm happy to trade any MCW shows to those that may want them..... our talent roster is getting deeper as the "big 2" let their talent go. A now short haired Joey Matthews (Mercury) is our current champ & Danny Doring is one of our mainstays. They, along with guys like Ruckus, Sabian, Derek Frazier, and afew others have been tearing up the east coast as of late.
Rick GarrardPosted on 07/22/07 at 19:41:19

Ruckus... wasn't he a part of Rick Bassman's UPW at one point?

And weren't Matthews along with Christian York pretty much mainstays of the JAPW and MCW area for a long time prior to WWE gigs?

And if you have Doring, you just gotta have the Angry Amish Chicken Plucker too.  Pfft!  It's only a matter of time before (if he hasn't been already) released from his WWE contract.
JustinPosted on 07/22/07 at 22:44:19

I think there were 2 different wrestlers called Ruckus....

This is the one that wrestles in CZW & was in WSX. His intro really gets the crowd going.

"The Butch Reed of The Green Weed, The Teddy Long of Hitting The Bong, The Jake The Snake of Getting Baked, The AJ Styles of Black & Milds, and The Bruce Lee of OOOOOOO WEEEEEEE!"

Matthews & York were & are mainstays down in this area.

Sorry, no Roadkill...yet just D2.
pszPosted on 07/23/07 at 02:09:51

I "lost track" of MCW about a year ago, and just haven't had a chance to "catch up" again, video-wise...

... Maybe when work slows down at the end of August...
Rick GarrardPosted on 07/23/07 at 02:50:46

If Ruckus was in Wrestling Society X, then it's the same guy from the UPW DVD I just sent back to NetFlix (UPW's "before they were stars" 2 disc set), as Aaron Aguilera is on the discs as well as a match of TNA top guys that at the time were UPW top guys in the form of UPW champ Samoan Joe vs Christopher Daniels.  :)
