The Wrestler - Starring Mickey Rourke

UnrightPosted on 11/27/08 at 06:25:19

I was just watching the trailer and clips for the The Wrestler. It looks like Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream) actually captured the story of the ethos and sacrifice of independent wrestlers. I'm really interested in watching it. Anybody else?

Oh, and I put this in this forum because of the "rohwrestling.com" banners in the background of the match scenes. Anyone got info on ROH's participation (and CZW & WXW apparently)?

Possible spoilers I guess...

There are three matches which take place in the movie, apparently. I don't know how they went about filming it, but within the movie plotline Rourke's character has three matches, the final one being a match with his old arch-rival (played by Ernest Miller) under the banner of Ring of Honor. I suspect that the trade-off was some free promotion for those organizations in exchange for allowing the wrestling scenes to be filmed in their rings. WXW helped train Rourke and I would have to believe that his match with Necro Butcher (it is in the trailer) was filmed in a CZW ring.

From all acounts it is supposed to be a really good film, hailed so by both fans and non-fans alike. Nicholas Cage was originally in the starring role, but I guess Rourke was Aronofsky's preferred choice and I think it pays off. Everything you see in the movie is legit as far as Rourke doing what a real wrestler would have to do - a real extreme form of method acting, that's for sure. The trailer got me pumped enough to want to see it and the reviews from people who have seen it have only increased my anticipation. It certainly wouldn't be difficult for it to be the best wrestling movie ever...

Necro Butcher competes for IWA-MS as well, so why does it naturally have to be a CZW ring? LOL

The IMDB credits for the movie has the CZW announcers (along with WXW & ROH) so everything TMX said makes sense.

The movie looks damn good.

Well seeing as it was established CZW has a part in this movie, that the Ring of Honor ring was used for the final match with Miller's character, and IWA-MS is probably gearing up for their 73rd annual "Last Show Ever"...

No, this is the greatest wrestling movie so far:

I could insert that movie whose title suggests that a certain part of Great Sasuke's anatomy is "Heavyweight Champion", but I'm not even going to go look for the box art on that one. Sure the actual Sasuke has nothing to do with it, but I'm just saying that would be the next logical step for this thread (or any of those other porn films that had appearances by FMW wrestlers).

Boy I love image links that don't work.

Everytime you post an image that doesn't link, an angel loses it's balls.

Calamari Wrestler rules because Osamu Nishimura rules.

Rourke didn't get the Oscar but at least he got an honorable mention by Sean Penn.
