Critic of the DawnPosted on 03/26/06 at 07:34:23

Since the third largest professional wrestling company in America gets a heck of a lot less coverage than WWE and TNA, and since I presently don't have the time to have a major presence on these boards anymore, I figure I'll post ROH show results here in this thread as shows occur.  Ring of Honor storyline/roster questions, discussion of the results, and any incidental questions for me can all go in this thread for the time being.

Most of the actual results will be copied from another source (usually the ROH message boards, but sometimes other sources if they're available sooner) as soon as possible.

ROH - Best in the World (3/25/06, New York City. Estimated Attendence: 1,040 paid, Announced as top NYC Draw to date)

PRESHOW MATCHES

1. Mitch Franklin d. Mike Turbin (could have been Tobin?)

2. Bobby Dempsey won a Four Corner Survival Match also involving Keenan Quinn, Smash Bradley and Shane Haggadorn, when he pinned Quinn.

3. Derek Dempsey d. Rich Titus to retain the Top of the Class Trophy

MAIN SHOW!

1. Jimmy Rave d. Pelle Primeau in a quick match. - After the match Prince Nana yelled at Bruce LeRoy who was in the crowd. LeRoy went to the back, and Jimmy Yang came out...which led to...

2. Jimmy Yang d. Jimmy Rave - After the match, LeRoy came in and kicked Nana, and went to kick Rave, but Rave bailed out of the ring.

3. Allison Danger d. Lacey, Mercedes Martinez & Daizee Haze in a Four Corner Survival Match - Martinez dominated the match, but Danger blind tagged herself in and got the pin on Lacey. Dog said that the crowd was on their feet for Martinez, and really loved the match!

Blade and Mikaze come out for their open challenge. The challenge is answered by CHRIS HERO AND NECRO BUTCHER!

4. Chris Hero & Necro Butcher d. Jason Blade & Kid Mikaze - Said to be a very quick match.

After the match Hero and Necro call out Adam Pearce. Pearce and Necro start to have a match, while Hero has ducked under the ring. Hero eventually comes back out from under the ring and he and Necro proceed to beat the hell out of Pearce. Hero then calls his "best friend from CZW, Claudio Castagnoli" down to help them out! Claudio comes down and looks confused for a bit...and then starts hitting Necro Butcher with European Uppercuts! Claudio and Pearce run off Hero and Butcher, afterwhich Claudio says "F**K CZW!"

5. Christopher Daniels d. Alex Shelley with the Angels Wings - Lots of stalling by Shelley to start off. Lots of armdrags being traded back and forth. Said to be a "solid, but not spectacular match".

6. Nigel McGuinness d. Claudio Castagnoli to retain the ROH Pure Title after a "vicious" lariat" - Dog said that they each only used about 1 rope break. People around him liked the match, but he didn't like it all that much.

Bobby Cruise announced that this is the largest ROH crowd in Manhattan to date! Return date of June 17th was also announced. It's now intermisison time!

7. Austin Aries d. Ricky Reyes by DQ - Reyes had the dragon sleeper on, but Aries was in the ropes. Reyes refused to let go, so he was disqualifed. Short, but good match. Reyes beat Aries down after the match, until Strong and Evans made the save. The Briscoes then came down and attacked Gen Next, beginning the Gen Next vs. Briscoes match!

8. Roderick Strong & Jack Evans d. The Briscoe Brothers with a Phoenix Splash variation on the Ode to the Bulldogs - Dog felt it was better than he expected, and called it a really fun match. Briscoes worked over Jack's leg for a while, but after a while longer, Jack stopped selling it. The crowd was super hot, and they all got a loud ROH chant after the match.

9. KENTA & Naomichi Marufuji d. Bryan Danielson & Samoa Joe when KENTA pins Danielson after "Go To Sleep" - Really solid match between all four. KENTA and Joe had some great exchanges. After the match, KENTA gets on the mic and said "I promise, I'll be back soon". Joe then got on the mic and said that KENTA may have won tonight, but he will never beat Danielson or Joe in a singles match. KENTA then takes the mic and says he doesn't understand English, so he doesn't know what Joe said. (Haha).
CrplsPosted on 03/27/06 at 08:27:54

Claudio turning on CZW is so sad. They should get him deported back to Switzerland.
rey619Posted on 03/27/06 at 09:17:27

Claudio rules! And he's the only wrestler that is involved with both promotions, so a turn *was* in order. And since he's a heel in CZW and a face in ROH, this makes perfectly sense.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 03/28/06 at 05:43:48

Make no mistake.  Claudio has got the potential to be HUGE in ROH, and I wouldn't be surprised to see either WWE or TNA pick him up in a couple years.  He's got the look, the charisma, and the size to make it at that level.

I'm really digging the CZW vs. ROH storyline, myself.  THIS is the way that you run an invasion angle.

God damn!  Both times now, I've wanted desperately to go to the ROH event when it came here to Detroit, but, both times I have been unavailable on the night it is here.  It is ridiculous! Hopefully they will come during the summer, that way I will definitely be able to go.  It looks like it should be a great even;, can't wait to see the results, Eric.

Critic of the DawnPosted on 03/29/06 at 05:19:07

This isn't exactly a ROH result or a link to a new video, but it bears mentioning that ROH has just announced their first tour of the UK this summer.

August 12th they will be appearing at The Liverpool Olympia in Liverpool, which apparently can seat up to 1,700 fans.  Tickets range from 10 Pounds for General Admission to 75 Pounds (about $130) for ringside seats.

August 13th they will be at The Broxbourne Civic Hall, which is a smaller arena seating 500 or so outside of London.  Tickets range from 20 Pounds for General Admission to 75 for Ringside.

ROH has had one show in the UK before (in 2003), but it was cross-promoted with the UK's FWA.

This is so awesome.. I had formulated a plan to travel to the US to watch RoH (even though it would near have bankrupted me), but now I can probably afford *both* watching RoH *and* luxuries such as eating, sleeping with a roof over my head, etc.  ;D

ROH - Dragon Gate Challenge Series  (3/30/06, Detroit.  Estimated Attendence: 450, not bad for a Thursday in a new market.)

Pre-Show Matches:

2) Lacey & Tiana Ringer defeat Allison Danger & Shantelle Taylor in a Tag Team SHIMMER match.

2) Ricky Reyes upsets Chad Collyer with the dragon sleeper.

3) BJ Whitmer pins Jimmy Jacobs after a lariat. During the match, a seemingly purposeful and worked botch occured while BJ had Jimmy on the top rope. They brawled in the middle of the ring afterward. Jacobs refused to shake Whitmer's hand. Whitmer also claimed Hero & The Necro Butcher were in the building.

4) Ryo Saito defeats Jimmy Yang.

ROH & KENTA Return to Detroit on June 23.

5) Jimmy Rave & Alex Shelley defeat Bryan Danielson & Delirious. Delirious was pinned.

INTERMISSION

6) Claudio Castagnoli defeats Shane Hagadorn. After the match, Chris Hero enters the ring and bashes Claudio for turning his back on CZW. BJ Whitmer rushes to the ring, but is beaten down by Hero & The Necro Butcher. Claudio then proves his ROH loyalty again by coming to the aid of BJ Whitmer.

7) AJ Styles & Matt Sydal defeat Dragon Kid & Genki Horiguchi. Styles pins Dragon Kid with the Styles Clash.

8) Blood Generation (CIMA, Naruki Doi, Masato Yoshino) defeats Generation Next (Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, Jack Evans). CIMA pinned Jack Evans. The last 8 minutes were described to me as being "absolutely insane, some of the best stuff ever."

9) Christopher Daniels defeats Samoa Joe in a Grudge Match. Christopher Daniels came to the ring as TNA X-Division Champion. Joe & Daniels are brawling all over the entrance way and have yet to make the ring. Daniels pins Joe...Hero & Necro come out and stare down Daniels while Joe is on the outside. Joe gets back in the ring, and a huge brawl begins. Hero & Necro are eventually kicked out of the building. Joe declares war between CZW and ROH.
Psymin1Posted on 03/31/06 at 21:59:32

ROH & KENTA Return to Detroit on June 23.
Hell Yeah!  That is excellent news, as I will most likely be able to attend it next time.  Looks like a good show, I wish I could have been there.

Any word on if the world tilte match was as good as their previous matches?
Critic of the DawnPosted on 04/01/06 at 16:47:39

From what I hear, the match started slow and gradually built up.  Of course, it's hard to do otherwise in a 56 minute match.  American Dragon was apparently rocking the oldschool heel mannerisms.  The general consensus seems to be that the match is going to be awesome on DVD, although several have commented that by that point the crowd was exhausted and not as loud as they might otherwise have been (It was a very long show).

CrplsPosted on 04/02/06 at 11:03:05

The ending to the Homicide-Cabana feud is the stupidest thing ever. If I didn't hate the Code of Honor before I do now.

If I respect someone, I don't pour draino down their throat.

Fuck you, Gabe.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 04/02/06 at 18:10:06

Tha Cabana/Homicide feud really started getting serious after Cabana disrespected Homicide by doing one of his goofy segments about him.  Homicide was seriously offended, and basically told Cabana that he would MAKE him understand what he was about.

The Draino was actually originally intended for Steve Corino (Homicide's most hated enemy, who Cabana brought in as backup for a tag team match), but Cabana helped Corino escape.  Homicide had warned him that there would be dire consequences with him interfering in that.  There were.

Since then, Cabana has repeatedly confronted Homicide, and repeatedly been beaten within an inch of his life.  Finally, last night in his hometown, he managed to defeat Homicide in the sort of match Homicide excels in.

After all the beat downs, Cabana came out on top.  Why the feel good ending?  Because Cabana was finally forced into a part of himself where he could understand what Homicide was about.  Homicide had pushed him beyond the point where he had to get serious to the point where he was deadly serious, and after doing everything it took and fighting for his life, he UNDERSTOOD Homicide.  Homicide saw this, knew that he had accomplished his goal, and shook his opponent's hand, putting the feud behind them.  Homicide is no honorable warrior, but Cabana had already paid for his initial disrespect in spades.

By offering his hand, Cabana was in a sense taking responsibility for all that had happened by visibly giving Homicide the respect he had earlier denied him.  Not fear, but respect.  Homicide and the Rottweilers don't give a damn about honor, but respect is a huge part of their world.

Viewed in that light, the ending makes sense to me, although it definately ISN'T what I was expecting.

Maybe it's one of those "had to be there" things.

CrplsPosted on 04/02/06 at 20:49:35

It's more like one of those "Gabe is a terrible booker" type of things. ROH puts on great matches, but the booking is just awful a lot of the time.

And supposedly, it may not even make the DVD, which says a lot. (Although I think that's just ROHboard speculation.)
AnubisPosted on 04/03/06 at 06:52:29

From what I've seen Gabe Sapolsky is a great booker.  Hearing about what happened sounded really cool.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 04/03/06 at 07:24:03

ROH's booking is usually to my taste, and the product has been so incredible in the past 9 months that I've all but given up WWE.   Depending on your preferences I can see how things like that could bother you, however.  The ending to the feud wasn't what I would have expected either.  But I can see how it'd make sense.

Also, I was previously under the impression that ROH's previous top attendence figure was 1800.  Technically this was not true, as that was 1800 fans total over the course of an afternoon and an evening show on the day before WM XX.  The afternoon show drew 600, and the evening show drew 1200.  The previous best was apparently 1500 for Final Battle 2003's AJPW vs. ROH supercard.

ROH is definately growing rapidly.  Besides slowly expanding into new markets, attendence is way up.  A year ago, 500 was an average show.  This weekend, with a total announced draw of 3500+ fans over 3 shows, the average is nearly 1200.  Granted, WrestleMania was a powerful draw, but I haven't heard of many shows since the awesome Summer of Punk with less than 700-800 fans.  On top of that, I've heard rumors that ROH has signed World Champion "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson to an exclusive contract and made him head trainer at the ROH school to keep him busy between shows.

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"
rey619Posted on 04/03/06 at 09:31:09

Gabe is the best booker in the world, only a Paul Heyman without a leash can rival him. The wrestling is different than the WWE, and so is the booking. This is a wonderful and original twist on a brutal rivalry.

I am sick and tired of the A4 feuds that goes on in the E. The Albright/Punk feud in OVW is another example of an original feud, and guess who booked that one? Heyman.
CrplsPosted on 04/03/06 at 10:10:05

I have no idea how this is an original twist. Flair and Funk did it years ago. ROH has also done similar things with "blood feuds" before as well.
rey619Posted on 04/03/06 at 12:41:44

If Flair and Funk did it, it's original. Wrestling moves in cycles, and things that happened 7 or more years ago can be done without being labelled as a copycat. I don't know who said that... Dusty Rhodes perhaps? That's why the WWE could do the Best of 7 Series with Booker and Benoit.

Who else in RoH has done this? I can't come up with any feuds ending like this.
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/05/06 at 02:49:58

the cyclical thing about 7 years is from the mouth of ROH's own James E. Cornette.

ROH - 100th Show Celebration (4/22/06, Philadelphia.  Estimated Attendence: 1000, another strong draw in the Philly market)

MAIN SHOW MATCHES

React just made contact. Apparently the building is "f*cking packed". Interestingly enough, so is Chris Hero's ass.

Match 1: Christopher Daniels defeats Claudio Castagnoli via pin. Loud CZW-ROH dueling chants to begin the evening. Crowd: 15% CZW - 85% ROH. Daniels shakes Claudio's hand after the match, and cuts a pro-ROH promo. Chris Hero appears, cuts promo "Great atmosphere." Hero setting the stage for the main event.

Match 2: Delirious wins Four Corner Survival. Delirious forces Jimmy Jacobs to submit. With the win, thousands of young men and basement dwelling no-life losers began crying.

Match 3: Tag Team Champions Austin Aries & Roderick Strong defeat Homicide & Ricky Reyes after Aries pins Reyes via 450 Splash

Match 4: ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson defeats Colt Cabana with a rollup. Apparently, the pin came out of nowhere (common) and the match was short (uncommon).

July 15 Return. Intermission. Attendance estimate- near 1,000.

Match 5: Derrick Dempsey defeats Pelle Primuea with a spinebuster.

Everybody, prepare your $20, because you will want to get this DVD when it is available-

Bryan Danielson cuts a promo in the ring. Reall good, live. He told the CZW fans that he was a real world champion, and he'd prove it by taking all challenges...Bryan Danielson has accepted a title challenge from...DELIRIOUS.

Match 6: ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson defeats Delirious via ref stoppage. During the match, Delirious "sliced his hand real bad". Delirious was bleeding from the hand. Danielson forced the ref to stop the match after beating Delirious repeatedly with elbows to the head.

Match 7: Briscoe Brothers defeat AJ Styles & Mat Sydal after doubleteam Jay Driller. "great match, Briscoes over bigtime".

DEBATE: James E. Cornette vs John ZandigDetails sketchy. Apparently some messages from REACT weren't received. It's probably best for fan reviews to provide details into this debate later tonight.

Match 8: Team CZW defeats Team ROH Insane brawl, the debate turned right into the main event. During the end of the match, Claudio Castagnoli turns on ROH and aides Chris Hero in beating Samoa Joe. Claudio...f8ck you. BJ Whitmer takes a Psycho Driver through a table and does a monster selling job. Whitmer is stretchered out.

CZW wins the battle. The war...not over.
CrplsPosted on 04/23/06 at 17:02:28

What's up with the Cabana stuff? One person told me he's probably going to get a WWE shot soon. But still. Five minutes and according to Gabe on the ROH boards, he wants to "start from the beginning again." Danielson with a personality has totally reinvigorated my love for him. We need more four minute abdominal stretch spots, though.

The main event sounds nuts and apparently Super Dragon got into it legit with a few fans. There are rumors of he and Hero monkey flipping a fan too.. although I have no idea how you coul legit monkey flip someone in a crowd without cooperation so who knows.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 04/23/06 at 18:43:04

The storyline reason for Cabana's quick defeat at the hands of American Dragon is pretty simple.  He's been brawling and fighting for his life for 6 months now, and his chain wrestling skills have suffered as a result.  While he's been training to work off his rust in that style for most of a month, there's no substitute for actual matches.  Trying to face the Best Wrestler in the World (Which Dragon is being portrayed as) without being fully prepared is just going to result in an embarassing defeat like this one.  Cabana is "starting from the beginning again" because he's focused everything brawling to the point that he's embarassing himself when trying to wrestle other kinds of matches.

Cocky oldschool heel American Dragon is probably my favorite wrestler in the world at this point, with the POSSIBLE exception of Samoa Joe, who is also up there.  Signing Dragon to a written contract was a wise move by ROH.

As for Super Dragon and the fans...  All I can say is "Plaaaaants!"  Still, I've heard some really good things about the main event, and will definately be purchasing the event once my collection catches up to what's going on.  Which is going to take a long long time, unfortuantely.

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"
jesse_ewiakPosted on 04/24/06 at 06:43:46

One guy on the DVDVR board said he was one of the guys Dragon hit. He admitted to trying to piss Dragon off too, so....
Critic of the DawnPosted on 04/26/06 at 04:29:33

Hmm.  Well, if that's the case, I really can't comment because I don't know what the guy was doing.  Depending on what was happening, Super Dragon was either way the hell out of line, or the guy got what was coming to him.

Another video recap up, this one with some nicely done highlights of the huge CZW vs. ROH main event from Saturday, plus interviews with Jim Cornette, Jimmy Jacobs and Colt Cabana.  From what I can see, the 100th show looks like it was INSANE, and I wish I could have been there.

ROH - Weekend of Champions: Night 1 (4/28/06, Dayton. Estimated Attendence: 500)

Pre Show:

1.) There was a 6 man mayhem featuring students from the ROH school. I didn't really know many of them and I have no idea who won. The match itself was rather bad.

2.) Chad Collyer def. Derek Dempsey via tap out. The match was ok overall. This was Chad's next to last ROH show for a while as he is heading off to the UK to wrestle for a few months.

Main Show:

1.) Colt Cabana def. Jimmy Jacobs w/Lacey. This was mostly a comedy match overall. Colt was getting under Jimmy's skin with comments at Lacey such as "Call Me" and such. Colt got the win over Jacobs with a standard Powerbomb. The match was ok. Nothing bad but nothing to exciting either.

After the match Jim Cornette and Ace Steel came out. Jim said he needed Colt's help if any of those CZW hardcore wrestlers show up. Colt said no at first but then after the fans chanted Colt and Cornette persuaded him a bit he changed his mind and said yes.

2.) Irish Airborn def. Spud and Jay Fury. There wasn't anything bad about this match but overall it just wasn't anything special. Spud seemed very nervous to me and he did a botch a few moves. Irish Airborn got the win with some crazy combo move that honestly was way to convoluted to even try and explain.

Super Dragon from CZW came through a side door and beat up what I think was supposed to be a fan. He hit him with a chair, dumped him over the guard rail, and then ran away.

3.) Jimmy Rave vs. Delirious went to a 15 minute draw. This match was very boring IMO. Not a lot to say about it really. Maybe the worst match of the show overall.

BJ Whitmer came to the ring in a neck brace and called out CZW. None of them showed up. Whitmer left the ring and as he was walking to the back Claudio Castagnoli jumped the rail, attacked him from behind, and then ran away.

4.) Nigel McGuinness def. Christopher Daniels on a count out to retain the ROH Pure title. This match started out real good and was on the road to being a fine match but the finish was awful. Both Nigel and Daniels were on the floor and In a Pure title match there is a 20 count. The ref. was at like 17 and Nigel tossed ROH photographer Mary Kate into Daniels and slid back in the ring right at the 20 count. The crowd hated the finish and IMO it killed the heat of the show a little bit.

Intermission: ROH returns to Dayton, Ohio on Friday July 28th 2006.

5.) Flash Flanagan def. Apocalypse. This was the second worst match of the show. I knew Flash from seeing him in IWA Puerto Rico but the other guy I have never seen or even heard of. Nothing about this was really bad but it had 0 crowd heat and was mostly just a simple standard match. Flanagan got the win a Ace Crusher.

6.) Bryan Danielson def. Jimmy Yang to retain the ROH World title. This was the second best match of the show to me. I knew Yang had no chance of winning going in but there were some good false finishes in it that had me going for a second. Danielson got the tap out win with the Cross Face Chicken Wing.

7.) Austin Aries and Roderick Strong def. Samoa Joe and Matt Sydal to retain the ROH Tag Team titles. This was by far match of the night and one of the best tag team matches I have ever seen live. Joe was amazingly over with the crowd in Dayton. This had tons of great false finishes and the crowd loves every second of it. Aries got the pin on Sydal following a 450 splash.

After the match Samoa Joe said he has one rule in Dayton and that is making sure someone gets the hell beat out of them. He said he failed in the match but refused to leave unsatisfied. He called out CZW for a fight. Necro Butcher hit the ring first and they went at it. Then out came Nate Webb and Super Dragon to make it 3 on 1. Colt Cabana , Ace Steel, and Adam Pearce then came in to make the save. It was then 4 on 3 until Claudio came in making it 4 on 4. Joe and Necro fought through the curtain and to the back but Necro came back to the ring after a while. They must have done something to Joe backstage because he did not return. BJ Whitmer then ran in and gave Necro one of the sickest steel chair shots I have ever seen in my life. The ref called for the bell making it an official match. This was a crazy brawl that went all over the place. Everything you can think of was used and done. Cabana was hit with a European Uppercut that by Claudio that knocked him off the apron and he went flying crashing through a table at ringside. The finish of the match came when Claudio pinned Whitmer with Samoa Joe's own Muscle Buster. Previously before that Super Dragon put Whitmer's head inside and chair and double stomped it from the top rope.

While choosing that finish in a "Pure Title" match is a bit silly, I have to say I love that as a tactic.
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/30/06 at 06:04:19

and it's a helluva way to get heel heat on Nigel for being the "anti-pure" Pure Champ.  And will make all the better when he does finally drop the title to someone that abides to the honor code of the Pure Title.

Critic of the DawnPosted on 04/30/06 at 06:13:02

Nigel's reign as Pure Champion has been incredibly amusing as a whole.  He's been heeling it up bigtime in a division created to promote gimmick-free technical wrestling, which is all the more effective because he's getting away with it time after time in a setting where the Title can change hands on a DQ.

So, while Nigel is probably in the lower half of the ROH roster when it comes to overall workrate, his gimmick and heel tactics are making him perhaps the best Pure Champion to date.  Funny how that works.  (To be fair, he IS a very respectable European-style chain wrestler, but overall he's limited compared to some.)

Delirious calls out American Dragon for a rematch on 5/13, and ROH Commissioner Jim Cornette officially requests aid from Homicide and the Rottweilers against CZW.

mms://128.241.238.33/ROH/sROHrecap6_05_06.wmv

Those familiar with Delirious' gimmick should be able to tell before even clicking the link that his promo is pure gold.  And Cornette requesting aid from Homicide when he was brought in as Commissioner in large part to deal with the Rottweilers running amok does an effective job of conveying how serious and heated the CZW/ROH war angle really is.

Dissappointing news for Ring of Honor this weekend.  Apparently WWE has re-signed Jimmy Yang, who was just finally hitting his stride in ROH and settling into a solid upper midcard spot in a feud against the Embassy.  While this is a dissapointment for ROH, there is plenty of quality talent on the roster ready and waiting to step up and fill his slot.

ROH & CZW are doing the Hardcore War/Invasion right.... like WWE should have done years ago.... I just hope that Vince & Co. don't rip all this off when relaunching ECW or do a high priced carbon copy of the whole thing including Cornette's plea to Homicide (I could just see Vince calling in Hogan or Austin for help)
Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/07/06 at 21:59:51

I don't think that a WWE version of Cornette's plea to Homicide would work as well, simply because Vince has depicted himself as such a badass who is capable of hanging with his own main eventers.  People will wonder why he doesn't just intervene himself.  Plus the idea of Hogan (especially) going against ECW wrestlers is laughable at his age.  Austin... maybe.  But it's unlikely due to his neck.  HBK is really the only one that Vince could approach in this manner.  That MIGHT be decent television, I suppose.

The whole reason this angle is working, however, is that it's two different promotions facing each other in a very even war.  I don't think WWE could keep up this kind of storyline for long once the initial markout period ended because everyone knows that regardless of storylines, Vince owns ECW.

More bad news for ROH.  TNA has apparently signed ROH's former on-air commissioner Jim Cornette to play a similar role in TNA.  While I'm sure that Cornette will be brilliant in the position, I suppose his role in ROH will probably be ending as a result.  While most TNA contracts don't prevent working in ROH at this point, I don't know that Cornette is going to want the extra travel involved in appearing in ROH at this point in his career.  Thus, I doubt we'll see him again in ROH any time soon.

Cornette is already taking some time off from attending ROH shows due to a knee injury - so at least it shouldn't be too hard to write him out of storylines, I guess.  Still.  A talker like that is a huge, huge loss.

ROH - How We Roll (5/12/06, Long Island. Estimated attendence: 500, which is a pretty standard number for shows not considered to be "must see.")

1) Bobby Dempsey & Alex Payne defeat Ernie Osiris & Rhett Titus. Osiris pinned by Bobby Dempsey after a Death Valley Driver.

2) Pelle Primeau wins the #1 Kikitaruship Four Corner Survival. Pelle Primeu pins Derek Dempsey with a rollup in about 7-8 minutes. Other two in the match were Shane Hagadorn and Mitch Franklin. Top of The Class trophy was not on the line. Pelle vs Kikitaru later tonight!

Ring Of Honor - Long Island, New York

1) Matt Sydal defeats Jimmy Yang after a Shooting Star Press in about 9 minutes. After the match, Yang is on the mic and told the fans to check him out on WWE.com.

2) Four Corner Survival - McGuinness vs Cabana vs Delirious vs Daniels Interrupted during intros by Christian Cage. Christian Cage asked Colt Cabana to be his tag team partner tonight...Colt Cabana accepted. Cabana & Christian vs Danielson & ??? as of now. This brings out the "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson. Danielson is asking Christopher Daniels to be his partner. The match is set- Bryan Danielson & Christopher Daniels vs Christian Cage & Colt Cabana. Danielson also promised Daniels a future title shot if they win. Match changed leading to...

2) Three Way Dance: Delirious defeats Nigel McGuinness & Kikitaru Lots of comedy, including slow motion spots. Delirious makes Kikitaru tap with his relatively new submission finisher around the 10 minute mark.

3) Alex Shelley & Jimmy Rave defeat The Rottweilers by DISQUALIFICATION. Match lasted around 19 minutes. Lots of interplay between Prince Nana and J-Train. Rotts were DQ'd when Julius Smokes interfered and attacked Jimmy Rave. After the match, Homicide responded to Jim Cornette with "F*ck you people, and f*ck this company" and the Rottweilers left.

Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli have stormed the ring. BJ Whitmer and Adam Pearce enter.

4) "The Kings Of Wrestling" Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli defeat Adam Pearce & BJ Whitmer. ROH Official Todd Sinclair was going at it with CZW "ref" Bryce Remsburg during the fight. The Necro Butcher aided Hero in pinning Adam Pearce. Samoa Joe hit the ring, but CZW retreated.

Return- August 4 w/ KENTA & AJ Styles
INTERMISSION
**Attendance "about the same as Glory By Honor". Big pop for Christian, but during his promo the crowd seemed 50/50 split between Danielson and Christian.**

5) ROHvideos.com Match: Samoa Joe defeats Apocolypse in 5 minutes. Joe wins after the Musclebuster.

6) Mark Briscoe defeats Roderick Strong in 15 minutes. Briscoe wins after the Wrist Clutch Burning Hammer type move.

7) Jay Briscoe defeats Austin Aries in 18 minutes. Briscoe made Austin submit to the Cobra Clutch. Briscoe worked over the shoulder of Aries throughout the match.

8) Christian Cage & Colt Cabana defeat Chris Daniels & Bryan Danielson in 28 minutes. Christian pins Daniels after an Unprettier. Daniels & Danielson didn't get along during the match. At one point, the crowd chanted "F*ck TNA" but Christopher Daniels got on the mic and shut it down saying "this is about pro wrestling, not about TNA". No title shot for Daniels for now.

End of Show.

ROH - Ring of Homicide (5/13/06, Edison New Jersey. Estimated Attendence: Roughly 700 in floor seating, plus more in general admission. I'll call it 800 as a shot in the dark.)

Pretty full attendance - Greg doesn't know how many... He thought it seemed like a little less than 4YA, but wasn't really sure. It looked like they had more seats set up and there were fewer people standing. EDIT: Seems like a big crowd - two sides have ten rows of seats, and the other two sides have seven rows of seats.

Pre-Show Matches

(i) Bobby Dempsey d. Alex Payne (?) with a death valley driver.

(ii) Top of the Class Trophy: Derrick Dempsey d. Shane Hagadorn with a spinebuster.

MAIN SHOW

(1) Colt Cabana d. Kikitaro via powerbomb. Said to be a really fun match and a good opener. Lots of comedy.

(2) Homicide & Ricky Reyes d. Dunn & Marcos in 7 minutes when Reyes made Marcos tap to the Dragon Sleeper

Adam Pearce is out, appealing to Homicide to join Team ROH. He says CZW has been kicking their ass and 'Cide has been a part of ROH since day one. Pearce says 'Cide needs to make a decision tonight and what he wants his legacy in ROH to be. 'Cide threw down the mic and left.

(3) Jimmy Rave d. Jimmy Yang via Greetings from Ghana in about 12 minutes. Yang went up for Yang Time, but Daizee got on the apron and knocked him down, allowing Rave to hit Greetings from Ghana... Daizee also interfered earlier in the match and apparently hit a sweet inverted DDT out of a tilt-a-whirl set-up. HUGE TP shower for Rave - way more than last night, apparently. Good match.

Post-match, Yang got on the mic and said some stuff (not sure what - probably the usual thanks) and then called out Bruce Leroy, who came out of the crowd to join him in the ring. Yang then challenged Rave & Nana to a tag match with he and Leroy on 6/17 in NYC. Leroy got on the mic and challenged Nana. No response from the Embassy.

Nigel's out for a promo. Shelley's not wrestling, so Nigel issues an open challenge to any champion, past or present. Enter: JAY LETHAL. I could hear the crowd going nuts for that.

(4) ROH Pure Title: Nigel McGuinness (c) d. Jay Lethal in about 15 minutes after two Towers of London. Really good match, Greg said. Crowd was way behind Lethal as a face, who did his total face act.

They announced a return on 8/5 with KENTA.

Dragon/Delirious starts with Danielson cutting a promo where he calls Delirious stupid and says he doesn't deserve a title shot. Says Nigel doesn't deserve a title shot, either. Then he slammed the fans for wanting to see christian and called everyone in the locker room retards - singling out Samoa Joe, Daniels, and Delirious. He offers Delirious one last chance to leave and go home. Delirious wasn't moving through this whole spiel; Dragon mocks the crowd some more. Then Delirious got up and took the mic - he cuts his usual charmingly incomprehensible promo, the gist of which is that he's gonna win the title and kick Dragon's ass. Crowd was WAY behind Delirious.

(5) ROH World Title: Bryan Danielson (c) d. Delirious in 25 minutes with a small package. Delirious got out of the crossface chickenwing and out of cattle mutilation twice. He even escaped the elbows to the head MMA finish. He almost got Danielson to tap with his crossface cobra clutch. He was making a big comeback at the end when Danielson got the small package on Delirious coming off the ropes. Awesome match.

INTERMISSION
Greg said he'd try and get some results from the student matches if he could. And he did!

(6) Christopher Daniels d. Matt Sydal in 16 minutes with a roll-up counter when Sydal went for the Angel's Wings. Really good match. Post-match, Daniels got on the mic and put Sydal over, wished him luck in Japan, and asked him if he'd please stop challenging Daniels to matches. Sydal said maybe one more after he got back from Japan.

(7) ROH Tag Titles: Austin Aries & Roderick Strong (c) d. Jay & Mark Briscoe in 20 minutes. Finish was a little complicated - Jay hit Roderick with the spike Jay-driller and went for the cover; at the same time, Aries rolled up Mark for the cover. So it was a double-pin situation, but since Aries and Mark were the legal men, that was the pin that counted. Definitely looks like they're setting up a rematch. Great match - all action and the crowd was really hot for the finish.

(8) Samoa Joe NC (?) Necro Butcher
The whole thing went around 25-30 minutes, Necro came out through the crowd and knocked out Cruse... Then Joe came out. Necro KO'd the ROH ref (Kehner) and Joe KO'd the CZW ref (Remsberg). They fought around the ring for like five minutes and then Hero came out and they beat on Joe two on one. Claudio came out with a chair and nailed Joe. Then Pearce and Whitmer came out and they brawled all over the arena for like 10 minutes. The students carried out Joe. It was Hero/Necro/Claudio vs. Pearce/Whitmer and they teased a bunch of table spots (like powerbombing Hero from the apron through a table on the outside) The CZW guys went to superplex Whitmer through a table with Pearce on it and everything went dark and Homicide's music hit. Place went NUTS. 'Cide teased siding with CZW, then started beating the crap out of Hero. 'Cide, Pearce, Whitmer, and the students drove out Hero and Claudio and brawled with them to the back, which led to:

(9)Homicide d. Necro Butcher in a crazy brawl that went about 10-15 minutes. Sinclair came out and rang the bell, so this was an official match. They brawled around the ringside area for a while, then 'Cide told the fans to help him out. The threw a TON of chairs into the ring - Greg estimated at least 50% of the chairs were in there. Necro was laying on the mat, BURIED under chairs. 'Cide went back in and gave Necro a piledriver - kickout. Necro gave 'Cide a tiger driver - kickout. Then 'Cide suplexed necro off apron onto a bunch of chairs on the floor. He rolled him back in ring - Necro kicks out. He gave him a splash (I think) - kickout. Then 'Cide nailed him with a lariat for the win... Post-match, 'Cide said Necro can come back to Ring of Homicide anytime he wants.

WAY better than 5/12 and BotB. Great show - just as good as 4YA, but in a totally different way. Best match was a tough call - the tag match was a great wrestling match; Dragon/Delirious was really entertaining; and the 'Cide/Necro stuff was hugely entertaining.

Two new videos are up at ROH.  First is the match taped on 5/13/06, featuring Samoa Joe and Apocalypse in a surprisingly competitive match.  Apocalypse actually controlled a large portion of the match, and as a result the pace is a lot slower than I'm used to seeing from Joe.

mms://128.241.238.33/ROH/sJoeVsApocalypse_5_12_06.wmv

Next we have a nice little Tag Team squash match between the best jobber team in the business (The Ring Crew Express) and the Rottweilers of Homicide and Ricky Reyes.  This is a solid *** tag team bout that's definately worth checking out even if you're not fans of anyone involved.  RCE play the underdog babyface role very well, and while Homicide isn't much of a talker, he has a strange nonverbal charisma about him befitting a top level wrestler.  Reyes... is solid in the ring, and that's all I can say about him.  Think a combination of Homicide and Low Ki, but without 90% of the badass charisma.

ROH's most recent Video Recap is up, and it's more of a clip reel than most of their past recaps.  However, it raises an interesting point.  All of ROH's champions are extremely dominant in their divisions despite heavy competition, and there hasn't been a title change in around six months now.

Between Generation Next, Nigel McGuinness, and Bryan Danielson, who will be the first to drop their title?

I vote Nigel.
MatteusPosted on 05/20/06 at 05:56:27

I'd say Gen Next. The tag titles tend to trade hands much much more than any other title. BUT it is nice to see a long title reign for the tag champs.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/20/06 at 21:04:16

The problem with McGuinness dropping the Pure Title is that there's nobody presently who could realistically win it from him.  Most of ROH's top wrestlers aren't interested in it for storyline or stylistic reasons, and there are few babyfaces in the midcard or upper midcard who are getting enough of a push to warrent it.  MAYBE Delirious will take it if his push continues.  MAYBE.  And maybe Davey Richards will be in an appropriate spot on the card a few months after he debuts.  But both of those scenarios would take at least a few months to build to.

Generation Next certainly have a lot more high level competition for their titles.  Between The Briscoe Brothers, The Rottweilers and The Embassy, there's a LOT of competition in that division.  The tag team titles feel like they could change hands at any time... but I don't think it's going to happen until GenNext breaks the Havana Pitbulls' record-length title reign in a month or so.

Finally, American Dragon faces a ton of challenges at the top of the card, both from within the company and without.  I think he'll hold onto the belt for at least six months for a combination of reasons:  First of all, ROH will probably hold off on Joe vs. Danielson until either Glory By Honor V or Final Battle 2006.  And second, if what I've read about Dragon being under exclusive contract to ROH is accurate, Danielson is the most reliable main eventer they've got considering 75% of ROH's top talent work TNA dates as well.  When Dragon DOES lose the title, it'll either be to someone struggling to break into the main event scene with limited or no ties to TNA, or to Jimmy Rave.

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"

And... here's today's ROH Video Recap.

mms://128.241.238.33/ROH/srecap_5_25_06.wmv

This one has highlights of the extremely spiffy Ring of Homicide angle, with 'Cide almost singlehandedly taking out the CZW opposition and giving The Necro Butcher a beating he won't soon forget.  From the sound of things, this was an awesome awesome show, and I can't wait to see it.

Additionally, there's some brief hype for The Briscoe Brothers vs. Generation Next, which is sure to be an incredible match and has a good chance of resulting in a title change, in my opinion.

Finally, on the Recap is a decent promo by BJ Whitmer, who is a guy ROH is really pushing heavily during this ROH vs. CZW feud.  Apparently his Jesus push is continuing, because he just challenged The Necro Butcher to a No-Ropes Barbed Wire match.  For those who haven't been following ROH religiously, there has only been one of these matches in the company's history, and that was a bout between Homicide and Steve Corino which firmly cemented 'Cide as a top level guy.  The question in my mind is: will this finally succeed in elevating Whitmer to the top of ROH?

I have mixed feelings about Whitmer.  He's solid in the ring, and he's at least an adequate talker.  But he's not especially charismatic.  The very definition of a midcard workhorse to me.  With the right opponent, he comes across as an extremely brutal guy (although not quite at Samoa Joe's level), but without the right opponent he feels very... average.  Considering he's one of ROH's few heavyweights, that's not really a huge disadvantage in the midcard, but a top level star needs a little more.

Will Whitmer's push finally establish him as a credible (and perhaps long overdue) main eventer?  Or is Gabe letting the fact that he's a big guy without a TNA contract blind him to the fact that Whitmer just doesn't have what it takes for the main event scene?

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"
rey619Posted on 05/26/06 at 09:38:47

I totally agree with your sentiments about BJ. I really want to mark out for him, cause he's a really good wrestler. The problem is.. he doesn't have the X-factor (oh, listen to me.. I sound like a judge in American Idol) needed to succeed at the top. That being said, Gabe can probably count on BJ to never jump to WWE or TNA (where the X-factor is even more needed), so if there is a sudden exodus of RoH main eventers (Joe, Shelley, Styles, Daniels and the rest of the TNA guys), Whitmer may very well get his big break.

His Jesus gimmick is perfectly suitable. Not only does he look a lot like the guy, his (somewhat derogatory) nickname has for a long time been Hillbilly Jesus. Now, if BJ only could possess a small fragment of the charisma and X-factor of "Scrap Iron" Adam Pearce...
Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/27/06 at 04:19:33

Pearce is another wrestler getting a big push from this angle, and in my view he's much more deserving.  In terms of workrate, he's probably a step behind most ROH stars, but he makes it up in personality, charisma, speaking ability, and X-Factor.

Like Jimmy Rave, if Pearce sticks around for the longterm, he's got the potential to be a top level heel for a long, long time.  Unlike Rave, however, I suspect his talent and size will draw the attention of WWE and TNA before too long...  Then again, neither one has expressed interest in Cabana yet, to my knowledge...

ROH - Destiny  (6/3/06, East Windsor CT.  Estimated Attendence: 500-600.)

It's said that Stevie Richards was spotted inside the building, likely there to watch. The show started a little late to allow more fans to get in the door. Crowd estimate at around 500-600.

PRE-SHOW:

1) Bobby Dempsey d. Alex Payne in about 2 min with a Death Valley Driver.

2) Handsome Johnny d. Pelle Primo when Pelle came off the top rope, but Johnny countered with a spin kick and got the pin.

3) Lacey d. Allison Danger for ROHvideos.com with an Implant DDT in about 6 min. After the match, fans were offering Lacey money, which she took and promptly shredded.

MAIN SHOW:

1) Davey Richards d. Jimmy Rave in 18 min with a side-Jay Driller. Crowd was absolutely hot for this. Davey was extremely over, inciting "Let's Go New Guy" chants.

2) Top of the Class Trophy Match: Shane Hagadorn d. Derrick Dempsey via tapout with what looked like a headlock/crossface combination. Crowd excreted on the match, and started a "Students Suck!" chant afterwards. Rest of students came out afterwards to shake hands with one another, except Shane brushed them off to celebrate with his trophy.

3) Sara Del Ray d. Daizee Haze in 12 min when Sara had a Butterfly Submission on which she turned into a butterfly suplex and got the win. Danielson is on his way out to the ring with Sara remaining inside. He put over Sara as the best womens wrestler out there, then said he hated coming to CT and hopes ROH never returns.

4) Four Corner Survival For A World Title Shot: Colt Cabana d. Jason Blade, Adam Pearce, & Delirious when Colt had Blade in an octopus stretch for a tapout. Completely out of nowhere as Delirious was climbing the ropes at the time.

5) Christopher Daniels d. BJ Whitmer in 16 minutes after Angels' Wings followed by Best Moonsault Ever. Good match, Daniels cut a promo afterwards(which I heard perfectly over the phone thanks to the tremendously awesome sound system-kudos again Cary!), inwhich he offered a rematch to BJ any time he wanted, then put BJ over for going all out in the fight against CZW. Said if BJ ever needed a partner, to just give him a call. Allison got on the mic, apologized to BJ for her actions against him in the past, hands were shaken, Prophecy sign was done. No actual announcement of a Prophecy reborn though. Quite a few WWE fans there, as they had BJ confused for Snitsky. Allison Danger is NOT wearing the nun outfit, but instead a complete schoolgirl outfit with plaid skirt and lollipop.

6) Shingo Takagi d. Ricky Reyes in 6 min with a Torture Rack turned into a Sitout F5. Shingo got out of the Dragon Sleeper by going into the corner. Basically a squash for Shingo.

7) ROH World Title Match: Bryan Danielson d. Homicide in 26 min when Danielson reverses the Cop Killer and hits 'Cide with USB elbows to the head. Sinclair stopped the match right there. Pearce came out, and everyone pushed for more time. Cornette was called on the phone for a decision, and he stood with the ref's ruling. Homicide got pissed off, said "F this company" and left through the crowd, ECW chant starts up. Before the match Samoa Joe came out to the ring in street clothes. He got on the mic, saying he was there in support of Homicide. He offered Homicide a handshake when Danielson took the mic away and went on a rant. Phone reception was cutting in and out every couple of seconds so it was hard to hear what was being said. Joe said he was the guest ring announcer for the match, and introduced 'Cide and then "Your temporary Ring of Honor world champion..." Brian Danielson. After the match, Danielson chop-blocked Joe in the leg, and Joe was helped to the back. Homicide also got streamers before the match.

8) ROH Tag Team Title Match: Austin Aries & Roderick Strong d. Jay & Mark Briscoe in 18 minutes. A brawl for the first few minutes of the match before settling down, and was a good match as it was building up when Strong had Mark up for a powerbomb then Aries hit a missile dropkick to Mark as Roderick dropped for the powerbomb and got the pinfall to retain. After the match, Austin got on the mic to say that when Generation Next formed it was about taking all the top spots in ROH. Now with Jack and Sydal in Japan, and Roderick with himself having the tag titles, there is no need for Generation Next anymore.

ROH - In Your Face (6/17/06, New York City. Estimated attendence: Sellout crowd, probably around 600 because of the small venue)

Ring of Honor returned to the New Yorker Hotel on 6/17, drawing a sellout crowd for their one night stand return to their original Manhattan venue. Full results:

1) The Briscoe Brothers defeated Jason Blade and Sterling James Keenan in a fun opener with lots of hot moves. Jay Briscoe pinned Keenan after a spike Jay Driller. This match was filmed for ROHVideos.com.

2) Jake Crist pinned Marcos of the Ring Crew Express after coming off the top rope and pulling Marcos down with him, drilling Marcos' jaw into Crist's knees. OK match.

3) Julius Smokes and Ricky Reyes came out and ripped on ROH Commissioner Jim Cornette for not booking Reyes. Reyes challenged Dave Crist, who slapped him. They rang the bell and had a short match with Reyes forcing him to tap out. Reyes refused to release the hold. Chris Hero ran in from the crowd and nailed Smokes with a title belt.

That brought out Homicide who called Hero a "Barry Windham f****t" and said that if Hero came to "Ring of Homicide in NYC", he was going to get his ass kicked. Homicide got a monster pop when he came out.

4) Davey Richards defeated Jimmy Rave, submission. This was Richards' debut in NYC. The crowd pelted and showered the ring with toilet paper when Rave entered the ring. Rave attacked Richards before the bell and they brawled around ringside. Richards suplexed Rave over the top to the floor, holding onto the move with both going backwards to the floor in a crazy move. Rave was bleeding from the back as the match went on. Word is that one of the fans hit a chandalier with a thrown roll of toilet paper, spreading some broken glass in the ring. Richards hit some stiff kicks and knees. Rave almost got the pin with a fisherman's buster. Richards finally forced a tap out with a leg submission to Rave's shoulder. Really good bout. Richards had a swollen eye afterwards.

5) ROH Tag Team champions Roderick Strong & Austin Aries defeated Colt Cabana & ROH Pure champion Nigel McGuiness - McGuiness and Strong started off. McGuiness tagged out to Cabana. After a good back and forth exchange on the mat with Aries, Cabana tried to tag out but was just given a thumbs up by his partner. McGuiness did his handstand on the top rope but Aries grabbed and held him upside down as Strong worked him over with chops. They continued to tease subtly that McGuiness wasn't 100% on board with Cabana. Lots of unique matwork with a European flair. Cabana missed a missile dropkick and Strong locked on the Strong Hold. McGuiness broke it up. After several more fast exchanges, Strong forced McGuiness to tap out with the Strong Hold.

6) BJ Whitmer vs. Jimmy Jacobs went to a no contest after one of the most insane spots I've ever seen. They brawled around ringside before the bell. Whitmer busted open a cut above his eye from a previous match. Jacobs went off the top with a big senton splash but Whitmer got his knees up. Whitmer hit an Owen Hart sitout tombstone but Jacobs kicked up. Lacey got involved so Whitmer kissed her. Lacey freaked out and spit all over well known front row ROH regular Paul "Green Lantern Fan" Sowsnoski. An irate Jacobs went insane and attacked Whitmer. Jacobs tossed Whitmer into the crowd and dove onto him. Jacobs went to the top but BJ crotched him. Whitmer then, I kid you not, powerbombed Jacobs off the top into the crowd on the floor with both men falling into the audience as if it was their own personal mosh pit. The place went absolutely insane and from my vantage point, it was one of the most insane sights I've ever seen at wrestling. They were lucky they weren't dead. Ref Mike Kehner ruled a no contest. Whitmer got a standing ovation and a chant. Jacobs sold it like he was decimated and dead in the crowd. The fans chanted for five more minutes.

ROH Lt. Commissioner Adam Pearce raised Whitmer's arm after the match. Jacobs was carried out by ROH's staff. As Whitmer celebrated in the ring, a fan threw something at, which sent Pearce into the crowd after him. The fan and a friend protested security removing them which brought out Samoa Joe who took the mic and put over NYC and promised the fans they were going to see some asses kicked tonight. He put over Jacobs and Whitmer and told the crowd, "Welcome to Ring of Honor!" The place popped and chanted ROH. Joe quickly got the focus back on the show as opposed to the fan being tossed.

Intermission

7) After intemission, Shane Hagadorn used a neck crank to make Rich Franklin tap out and retain the ROH school's top of class trophy. Hagadorn was trying hard to get crowd reaction by being a smart aleck heel.

8) Adam Pearce came out and said he knows CZW's Claudio Castagnoli was hiding in the building and told him to come out and get his ass kicked. Castagnoli came out through the crowd with music, although Pearce told ROH to play it. They brawled around ringside and then up the aisle. They went back and forth. Chris Hero came out and was hiding in the crowd waiting to run in. The crowd chanted at him to give it away. Hero hit Pearce with a title belt as he was on the top rope, causing a DQ.

Hero took the mic as Castagnoli kept beating Pearce. He said that he's caused a ton of havoc tonight and will do so at the Cage of Death. He said Homicide won't so a damn thing about it, which brought out Homicide. He attacked both Castagnoli and Hero. He and Pearce had words and then Homicide hit a flip dive onto Hero. Referee Paul Turner rang the bell and Hero vs Homicide was officially a match...

9) Hero and Homicide brawled. A fan held a chair out and Homicide threw Hero into it like Tommy Dreamer used to do to Raven. They brawled up the aisle and Homicide suplexed Hero on the entrance ramp. They went back and forth in the ring until Homicide hit a big bulldog. Hero hit a running big boot on Homicide, knocking him to the floor. Hero worked him over with a cravate and went for a moonsault but missed. Homicide hit a twisting DDT off the ropes. He locked on a STF, but Hero made it to the ropes. The crowd chanted "F*** John Cena." Hero came back and did the Cena "You Can't See Me" hand wave to mock the fans. Now, that was funny. Hero hit a running powerbomb through a table propped in the corner for a near fall. The place exploded when Homicide kicked out. Hero teased an Ace Crusher off the ropes but Homicide nailed him and hit a frog splash for the pin. Hero kicked up at two. The crowd crapped on the ref for a slow count. Hero nailed Homicide with the title belt but he kicked out. Hero measured Homicide for a running charge but Homicide kicked him. Homicide went for a lariat, missed but then hit a second lariat for the pin.

Homicide grabbed the mic and said, "Take this piece of sh** and carry him out of the greatest city in the f***ing world." Hero fought security off and ran off on his own, out through the crowd. Homicide said he's been in ROH since day one but in the last year he's lost friends and been screwed over by the politics in wrestling. Homicide said he's the MVP for 2006 and by the end of the year he'll be World champion. He named the ROH executives and said if he doesn't get a title shot, he will quit and be gone for a bigger company for more money. Fans yelled ECW and chanted TNA. He said he didn't mean any of those groups and then demanded a title shot at the company's Final Battle event in December and said it had better be in NYC. It was a great promo.

10) KENTA vs. Samoa Joe vs ROH champ Bryan Danielson - Non-title: They started off on fire with tons of chops and stiff rapid fire shots. KENTA looked to have had his bell rung as he was out on his feet for quite awhile. Joe did a dive through the ropes on both of his opponents. Joe tossed KENTA over the rail and brawled with him in the first row. Danielson hit a springboard dive into the crowd on both. KENTA superplexed Joe and that's not a typo. Danielson locked on the Cattle Mutilation but Joe hit a senton bomb. Joe went for the muscle buster on KENTA but Danielson took out his bad knee. KENTA and Danielson battled back and forth. Danielson hit a top rope belly to back suplex for a near fall. Joe returned to the fray and KENTA locked on a sharpshooter. Danielson broke it up. KENTA scored the pin on Danielson with his GO TO SLEEP. Great match although it wasn't at the level it could have been due to the KENTA situation.

After the match, KENTA said that he wanted an ROH title shot. Joe said that he wanted one first, then slapped Danielson "for taking a cheap shot" at Joe's knee. Joe slapped him with the microphone and walked out. KENTA and Danielson shook hands to end the show.

Notes: Former ECW star Joel Gertner and former ROH champion Xavier are backstage visiting...Several WWE.com and production staffers are also at the show watching...ROH returns to NYC on 9/16 at the Grand Ballroom of the Manhattan Center with Pro Wrestling NOAH's KENTA and Naomichi Marafuji returning. The company has signed a contract to run regular events there. Tickets were moving briskly during intermission and after the show with much of the ringside seats sold out.

There were a number of injuries coming out of Ring of Honor's New York City return Saturday night. Both KENTA and ROH champion Bryan Danielson suffered concussions during their Three-Way match with Samoa Joe. Joe was feared to have suffered a ruptured eardrum as he has terrible ringing in his ears after the match but it was starting to subside about 30 minutes after the bout.

Although the spot that climaxed their match was positively insane, Jimmy Jacobs and BJ Whitmer were both OK after their match. Whitmer is still working on a hurt ankle from the bad spill they took on their 3/30 match in Detroit and also had a cut he suffered from a previous brawl with Necro Butcher (that was super glued closed) reopened.

As noted this evening on PWInsider.com, Ring of Honor has signed a contractual agreement with The original home of Monday Night Raw, The Manhattan Center's Grand Ballroom to host ROH events every 7-8 weeks over the next 12 months. Tickets for their debut on Saturday 9/16, with tickets starting at $50 and working downward, were moving quickly after the announcement. ROH is thrilled to be back in Mid-town Manhattan as the venue is within walking distance of almost every major subway line and buses.

Nigel McGuiness and Davey Richards both suffered swollen eyes in their respective matches. Jimmy Rave had several cuts on his back from hitting the railings outside the ring during his match with Richards.

And... there are a couple video recaps I missed from recent weeks as well, so let me go ahead and post those:

mms://68.178.174.134/ROH/sVideo_recap_6_7_06.wmv

First of all, we have the latest ROH Recap, which features a nice little back and forth promo between Colt Cabana and ROH World Champion "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson where Cabana tries to goof on Dragon for his pasty pale complexion.  Dragon fires back by reminding Cabana that the last time they faced each other, Dragon defeated Cabana in only 5 minutes.  He then challenges Cabana to an early match in FIP, ROH's sister promotion based in Florida.  We then have some hype for KENTA's next tour of ROH and highlights from the debut of Davey Richards.  Finally, the Recap ends with "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels challenging Christian Cage to return to ROH one more time to face him one-on-one.

Finally, we have a ROHVideos.com match between Allison Danger and Lacey:

mms://68.178.174.134/ROH/sAllisonDangerVsLacey_6_3_06.wmv

Pretty good women's match with some impressive moves (mostly by Lacey).  Nothing to write home about, though.  Lacey plays the crowd effectively through the match, playing up her manipulative man-hating bitch character quite effectively.  Danger plays the generic babyface somewhat clumsily - she's much better when she has Christopher Daniels to play off of as his valet... especially since she has a wonderful latex nun outfit with fishnet stockings she sometimes wears in valet mode.  Mmmmm...  Gotheriffic.

Yeah, so I'm shallow.  Fuck off. ;D

I'm sure the boys will be just thrilled hearing the news that they have to tote the ring, the lighting and all production equipment in a small freight elevator to get to the ballroom, and they better hope the elevator doesn't get stuck in the process.  WWE had horror stories when taping RAW in the venue.
rey619Posted on 06/18/06 at 21:36:18

Jacobs and Whitmer outdone the 3/30 match they had? Un 'fn' believable...

Although I absolutely adore the wrestling product that is RoH, they are more than welcome to not go all out everytime.. somebody *will* get seriously hurt one of these days.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/18/06 at 22:20:54

Considering it's a sign that ROH is moving up in the world, and considering none of ROH's New York City venues have been all that wonderful (The New Yorker is nice but too small, the Supper Club is even smaller and horrendously expensive, and Basketball City literally only has a single way of entering - through a set of revolving doors.) I doubt it'll bother them too much.  Besides, if Dunn and Marcos decide that they're not gonna take it anymore, ROH can always have the Students set up the ring.

Another video recap this evening:

mms://68.178.174.134/ROH/sRoh_Video_Recap_6_20_06.wmv

In this video recap, they show the first second or so of the scary Whitmer/Jacobs bump from the 6/17 show, and announce that because the two men put their lives on the line and were unable to continue, they will face Danielson in an Elimination Triple Threat Match for the ROH World Title soon.  Should be interesting to see how well Danielson's style meshes with Whitmer and Jacobs'.  Additionally, there's some hype for KENTA's upcoming matches against Strong and Aries.  Finally, Colt Cabana cuts another promo hyping his title shot against American Dragon in his home town of Chicago, and pointing out that Danielson was only able to defeat him in FIP because he had a foot on the ropes.  Interesting build for this one - Cabana is a really likable guy, but I hope Dragon retains.

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"
Nah, nothing shallow there.  Allison Danger has plenty of talent to kick ass and looks good doing it.  She's a natural beauty, too, so that's all good, no plastic parts here.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/23/06 at 06:26:03

Regarding Allison Danger... she's passable in the ring, but not much more.  And on her own, she's more or less a pretty face without much purpose.  She makes a great valet/manager, though, and only partly because I dig the gothy latex nun thing.

Funny story about her.  I don't recall which show it was at, but Danger was accompanying Christopher Daniels to the ring not too long after he returned to ROH, and before Daniels' match could start, a random fan shouted "Hey Allison, what makes you so dangerous?!?"

Danger proceeded to ignore him until Daniels turned his back on his opponent, walked across the ring, leaned out through the ropes, pointed to Allison Danger, and instructed, "Tell him!"  Sadly, I (along with the rest of the crowd) was too busy cracking up to hear her response.

So.  Yeah.  Fun times.  And Allison Danger IS indeed extremely attractive.  But that may just be my evil woman fetish talking.

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"
AnubisPosted on 06/23/06 at 08:13:21

Nah, that ain't no fetish.  She IS that attractive.  Heck, she looks better than any woman WWE has to offer.  TNA, too.  I think.  Lemme think on that a sec . . .

. . .

. . .

. . .

Well, maybe So Cal Val might be better looking, maybe, but other than that, yeah, I stand by that.

ROH - Throwdown (6/23/06, Detroit. Estimated Crowd: 400-500. The Detroit market seems to be fairly tepid, but until they've had a Saturday show it's difficult to tell whether it's worth developing it further at this time.)

PRE-SHOW:

(a) GUTTER pinned BOBBY DEMPSEY after a powerslam

(b) C.J. OTIS pinned RHETT TITUS

Otis has worked for IWA:MS and the pre-show matches are now complete.

MAIN SHOW:

1) IRISH AIRBORNE of JAKE & DAVID CRIST over SHANE HAGADORN & KEITH WALKER when Hagadorn was pinned

2) NIGEL MCGUINNESS pinned CONRAD KENNEDY III to retain the ROH Pure Title

3) JAY & MARK BRISCOE over COLT CABANA & ACE STEEL when Jay pinned Ace after a Spike Jay-Driller

The Briscoes cut a promo following the match saying that they were back and going for the tag team titles.

ROH announced that they will return to Detroit on October 7, 2006. This will mark the first Saturday show in the market.

4) DELIRIOUS over JIMMY RAVE, SAMOA JOE, and DAVEY RICHARDS in a Four Corner Survival Match via submission

Joe had Rave in a choke late in the match, but Delirious hit Shadows Over Hell on Joe forcing the break, which in turn allowed Delirious to lock his submission on Rave for the victory.

CZW's Claudio Castagnoli and Necro Butcher came in the front door during intermission and called out Adam Pearce.

Necro v. Pearce is on NOW!

5) ADAM PEARCE over THE NECRO BUTCHER via DQ when Claudio interfered.

Claudio and Necro double-teamed Pearce until the lights went out and Homcide's music hit.

Homicide hit the ring and we now have Homicide v. Claudio.

6) HOMICIDE pinned CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI after a lariat

This match was reported much more of a technical match than the all-out brawl that was Pearce-Necro.

7) BRYAN DANIELSON retained the ROH WORLD TITLE over JIMMY JACOBS and BJ WHITMER in a 3-Way Elimination Match

BJ was out first after a Contra Code/Powerbomb combo by Jacobs and Danielson.

Danielson then took liberties with Jacobs and beat the, and I quote, "****!" out of Jimmy hitting him with a barrage of elbows before getting the victory with a modified choke.

8) KENTA pinned RODERICK STRONG following Go To Sleep

Following the match, The Briscoes hit the ring and attacked Strong. This was a prime opportunity with Strong's partner, Austin Aries, not in Detroit tonight.

KENTA actually assisted Strong in fighting off The Briscoes.
AnubisPosted on 06/24/06 at 21:58:21

I would love to see Dragon's three-way with Jacobs and Whitmer!
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/25/06 at 06:32:02

Ace Steel made the save and a 6-Man Bunkhouse Brawl is on NOW!

Intermission

6) NIGEL MCGUINNESS over HOMICIDE via countout to retain the ROH Pure Title

Homicide threw a fit after the match and Pearce came out to try and reason with him.

Homicide ended up leaving through the front door of the Frontier Fieldhouse.

7) KENTA over AUSTIN ARIES after Go To Sleep in about 22 minutes.

Following the match, The Briscoes attack Aries. KENTA made the save and Strong also came in to assist.

KENTA got "Please Come Back!" chants.

8) BRYAN DANIELSON over COLT CABANA via pinfall in about 30 minutes

Colt challenged Danielson to a 2/3 Falls Match when ROH returns to Chicago on 8.26.

Danielson accepted.

Colt v. Danielson III on 8.26 is signed!
rey619Posted on 06/25/06 at 12:04:49

I really hope this means Josh Abercrombie gets signed to more dates, he's one of the better guys in IWA:MS at the time. He must be a success with a move with the name of Taliban Backpack.

Do you think Homicide will win the World Title at Final Battle 06? Or will he lose and leave for either TNA or ECW? I hate to see Homicide go, I just love that character.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/25/06 at 16:55:48

Well, considering Homicide is big in ROH but a smalltime tagteam wrestler stuck in a storyline where he doesn't actually wrestle in TNA, I doubt he's going to drop ROH for TNA unless they start handing out exclusive contracts.  As for ECW... since it's under the WWE umbrella, I doubt we'll see them hiring lots of small but talented wrestlers like 'Cide.  It's much more likely they'll sign Colt Cabana, especially if Punk really takes off.

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"
rey619Posted on 06/25/06 at 20:26:35

Yeah, I just heard some rumors that Terry Funk was quite high on Homicide. Then again, Funk probably doesn't have a whole lot to say in WWECW.

And I mean, the "if-I-don't-win-I'll-leave-storyline" has been used before, not more than a year ago by Danielson. Which makes me believe Homicide will win the big one. Perhaps even from Samoa Joe... who knows..

Video time.

mms://68.178.174.134/ROH/sBriscos_vs_SterlingnJason_6_22_2006.wmv

This video shows a very solid tag team match between the Briscoe Brothers and "Sterling" James Keenan and Jason Blade originally filed on 6/17/06.  This match does a lot to show just how good the Briscoes are as they split the ring and isolate and destroy their opponents.  That said, for what amounts to a jobber squash, Blade and Keenan got a decent amount of offense, each getting to show off an excellent spot which hints at their potential.  I wouldn't mind seeing these two becoming more permanant fixtures in the midcard.

As for the Briscoes, with their combination of good old fashioned tag team psychology and devestating looking moves, they are (in my opinion) one of the most exciting tag teams around today.

One more video before Death Before Dishonor.  You can never have too much hype for your big shows!

mms://128.241.238.33/ROH/sVideoRecap_7_11_06.wmv

The video starts with Dave Prazak announcing that he is going to find Homicide to try to see whether Ring of Honor can expect Homicide to be the mystery fifth member of their team in the huge Cage of Death main event of Death Before Dishonor 4.

We then go to clips of Homicide's evolution from a gimmicky tag team wrestler to hardcore brawler to the main eventer he is today, in the process seeing him rub shoulders with big names such as Abdullah the Butcher and Dusty Rhodes.  A slightly drunk-sounding Homicide complains that despite bing one of the few constants in the company, he has never held gold.  Clips run of many of 'Cide's near misses, then of his recent declaration that if he doesn't win a title by the end of the year, he will leave ROH forever.  Homicide isn't really much of a talker, but this seems like one of his better promos to me.

We then shift to hillbilly country, where the Hillbilly Jesus himself, BJ Whitmer, cuts a pretty decent promo.  He hypes the upcoming 2 weeks, in which he will compete first in the Cage of Death against Team CZW, and then in a No-Ropes Barbed Wire match against Necro Butcher.  Whitmer says that these two matches will finally be his chance for revenge against CZW, and that they will be both a high point and a low point in his career.  The clip ends with a close up of a barbed-wire fence.  This was better than I was expecting for Whitmer, as he usually doesn't show much charisma.  While this promo showed that he CAN indeed talk, he has a strange cadence to his voice which makes everything he said sound cheesier than it otherwise might.

Clips show hyping Death Before Dishonor 4 and the Cage of Death match.

Finally, we rejoin Dave Prazak as he announces he's tracked down Homicide.  When Prazak asks Homicide if he'll be on ROH's side at Death Before Dishonor, 'Cide replies that he might be... but only if Ring of Honor grants him 3 wishes!  What exactly does Homicide want?  Why, you'll have to wait for Death Before Dishonor 4 to find out, of course!  Interesting thought.  I'm curious to see where exactly they're going with this.

ROH - Death Before Dishonor IV  (7/15/06, Philadelphia.  Estimated Attendence: 1000-1100)

PRE-SHOW MATCHES:

1) Rhett Titus defeats Derek Dempsey, Bobby Dempsey, Franklin, Blanco and Payne in a 6-Man Mayhem Match

2) Shane Hagadorn defeats Pelle Primeau via Submission with a Crossface.

MAIN SHOW:

1) Delirious forced Seth Delay to tap out with a Crossface after hitting a splash from the top rope to Delay's back as he was on his hands and knees.

*Prince Nana came out and announced he had a huge surprise joining the Embassy, which turned out to be the returning Sal Rinauro.  Rinauro got on his hands and knees, acting as a footstool for Jimmy Rave.

2) Jimmy Rave & Sal Rinauro defeated Colt Cabana & Jay Lethal after Rinauro superkicked Cabana and Rave speared him.  Lethal was a last minute substitute for Jay Fury, who injured his ankle a few nights ago.  He had a new look with longer hair and a white robe.

3) ROH Pure champion Nigel McGuiness defeated Roderick Strong, countout.  They did a lot of matwork early which the CZW fans crapped on.  They teased a countout with Strong but he got back to the ring at 19.  There were a lot of stiff chops and moves with the crowd getting into it as the bout went on.  They battled up the aisle, where Nigel DDT'd Strong.  They battled to make the count back to the ring.  Strong went to return but Nigel grabbed his leg and pulled him back, winning by countout.  The finish wasn't loved by the crowd but the match was great.

*ROH Commissioner Jim Cornette came out to address the fans.  He said that the new ECW proved that Vince McMahon and his brain surgeons could screw up a wet dream.  He said it also proved that ROH is the only hometown promotion in Philadelphia.  He said that he had a few announcements.  KENTA will challenge Bryan Danielson for the ROH champion on 9/16 in NYC at the Manhattan Center.  KENTA will also appear on the Philly return on 11/4.

*Cornette then turned his attention to CZW, saying everything is going to be settled tonight.  He said it all comes down to the Cage tonight and that's why JJ Dillon will be ROH's Coach tonight.  He said it's 5 vs. 5 tonight and he wants Homicide to be the 5th guy but Homicide had three demands and Cornette said that would give him too much power, so there are others who would love to defend ROH.

*ROH champ Bryan Danielson came out.  He said that Cornette keeps asking for Homicide because he's the "CZW Kiler" but no one has beaten Danielson.  He told Cornette to pick him because he doesn't need chairs because he can tear tendons and pop elbows.  He asked to be put on the team and said he doesn't need any favors in return.  Cornette said he agrees and said he's got spot #5 on Team ROH.

4) The Briscoes defeated Irish Airborne in a really fun back and forth tag match.   They did stereo shooting star presses to the floor at one point.

5) AJ Styles pinned Davey Richards with the Styles Clash in a good match.  The crowd seems burnt out from the heat in the building.

6) ROH champion Bryan Danielson defeated Sonay Dutt, representing CZW via referee's decision after a belly to back suplex off the top followed by a series of elbow strikes to the face.  When Dutt didn't defend himself, the referee stopped the match.  Danielson was announced as the "CZW Killer" after the match.  The fans chanted "Don't come back" at Dutt.

7) Cage of Death Match:

There are two ladders, two tables wrapped in barbed wire, and several trash cans in the ring.  JJ Dillon won the coin toss so ROH has the advantage as the entrances will be done War Games Style.

The first men in are Samoa Joe (ROH) and Claudio Castagnoli (CZW).  Joe hit a flying forearm out of the ring on Claudio, then kicked a trash can into his face.  BJ Whitmer (ROH) was third man in.  ROH beat down Claudio.

Chris Hero (CZW) was out next.   CZW took control.  Bryan Danielson was the fifth in and cleaned house.  He dropkicked Hero while Hero was on the top rope.  He called for Joe to hit a muscle buster on Hero, but then clipped Joe's knee and attacked him (they have a ROH title match next month).  Danielson walked out of the match while Joe was carried out.

Nate Webb was next out for CZW and all three destroyed Whitmer for several minutes.  Adam Pearce hit the ring for ROH and took the fight to CZW but they were overcome.  Necro Butcher joined the fight for CZW.  They continued the assault on Pearce and Whitmer.

Ace Steele hit the ring for ROH and laid out CZW with a cowbell.  CZW continued to beat down ROH.  Hero began to antagonize the crowd on the mic and fans began throwing a lot of bottles and garbage in the ring.  Hero said he had someone who hated him as his last partner because that person hates ROH fans more then he hates Hero...CZW's Eddie Kingston.  CZW continued beating ROH, five on three.

Kingston chopped Hero in error and they started getting in each other's faces shoving the other.  Homicide's music hit and the place went insane.   Homicide slammed a piece of wood over Kingston's head.   He laid out CZW until Necro hit him with a chair.  Necro charged him but Homicide tossed tacks on the mat and Necro ran across them barefoot.  Homicide tossed forks to Team ROH and they went to town on CZW.

Steele dove through the ropes but Kingston moved and Steele crashed through a table that was standing upright.   Webb took a bump on thumbtacks.  Lots of weapon shots.  Homicide hit an Ace Crusher through a chair on Hero.  Pearce hit a top rope elbow on Webb for a near fall.  Hero teased falling through a table wrapped in barbed wire but was knocked past it, into the Cage.  Whitmer hit an Exploder on the floor onto a trash can on Kingston.

Hero and Pearce battled to the top of the cage.  Castagnoli jumped from the top to the cage and hit a side Russian Legsweep off the top through two tables on Pearce.  Hero hit a moonsault into the cage on everyone. Homicide missed a running senton.  Whitmer hit a brainbuster onto a chair on Hero, but Necro hit him with a chair to break it up.  Homicide and Whitmer hit a double belly to back suplex on Necro, who hit the back of the chair with the back of his head.   They tried to toss Necro out of the ring onto the barbed wire table but he escaped.  Whitmer put Necro on his shoulder and dove backwards through the barbed wire table.

Homicide brought a barbed wire board in from under the ring.  Webb tried to get him with a chair but Homicide clotheslined him.  Homicide hit the CopKilla onto the barbed wire board and scored the pin for Team ROH.

*Jim Cornette came out and told the ROH staff to take the garbage wrestlers and drag out the trash.   Cornette asked Dillon, Pearce, and Homicide to stay at ringside.  He thanked Dillon for leading ROH to victory and thanked Pearce for being his eyes and ears when he was dealing with knee surgery.  Cornette thanked Homicide for stepping up and said he knew Homicide would do what needed to be done for his home promotion.   He said Homicide has his three wishes.  The fans chanted, "Low Ki."

*Homicide said he wants Steve Corino in a ROH ring.  Cornette said he would make it happen.  Homicide said he wanted a ROH title match, and Cornette said he got it.  Homicide then said he wanted Low Ki reinstated.  Cornette said that he has a problem with that because Ki knocked his tooth out.  Cornette said he promised he would do something for Homicide, not Ki, and Ki will never be back as long as Cornette is back.  Homicide said that Cornette was a liar because he's not giving him what he wants.

*Cornette said he's not going to do it and asked if he was Homicide or "Homocide" because he wanted his gay lover.  Homicide spit in Cornette's face.  Pearce hit Homicide and Cornette maced him.  Dillon and Pearce handcuffed Homicide to the corner.  They maced Julius Smokes as he tried to climb the cage.  Cornette began whipping Homicide with a strap as the ROH staff tried to get in the ring to end the show.

Some more videos this week.

mms://128.241.238.33/ROH/sRecap_7_19_06.wmv

First of all, we start with a recap of Death Before Dishonor IV.  Clips are shown of ROH absolutely destroying CZW after Homicide joins their team to replace Bryan Danielson.  Lots of brutal action here, although as usual, they stop the clips right before the impact in the sickest bumps.

We then cut to a bruised and battered BJ Whitmer, who briefly calls out The Necro Butcher, announcing that he's coming to destroy him in their No Ropes Barbed Wire Match on 7/28.  Decent mic work by Whitmer here, with less of the funny cadence than in the last recap.  It's still there, though, and it still makes him sound kinda cheesy.

More DBDIV clips.  I've got a cowbell!

We then go to a recap of the controversial ending of the show, with Cornette agreeing to Homicide's Three Wishes.  He gives him a match against Corino.  He gives him a guaranteed World Title shot.  But when he demands the re-instatement of fellow Rottweiler Low Ki, Cornette refuses.  'Cide calls him a liar, Cornette calls 'Cide gay, and it's on.  Adam Pearce attacks 'Cide but is easily repelled until Cornette maces 'Cide.  JJ Dillion handcuffs him to the ring, and Cornette gives 'Cide a good old fashioned country whippin'.

Jim Cornette then cuts an amazing promo putting down Homicide and the Ring of Honor fans, saying he's done a lot for them over the past 2 years, ranting about technicalities...  Just great great stuff.  This is how you cut a promo.  Just watch the recap.  This whole angle is particularly interesting because Cornette was originally brought in as Commissioner largely to deal with Homicide and the Rottweilers, who were out of control.  Cornette is only doing exactly what he was brought in to do (well, I suppose country whippin' isn't in his job description, but you know what I mean).  Nice use of shades of grey here.

We then cut to a promo by Christian Cage hyping his upcoming singles match against Christopher Daniels, interspersed with clips from Daniels in a previous update requesting the match.  Good promo by Cage.  He's always a good talker, and I like him better when he isn't shouting into a microphone.

We finish with clips of Gary Michael Cappetta trying to get an interview with Colt Cabana.  However, Cabana's friends tell him they don't know where he is.  Before they can get rid of him, though, Delirious pops out of NOWHERE and babbles incoherantly about "that way" or somesuch.  I love Delirious.  GMC looks outside and only sees a car, which is rocking rather suspiciously.  GMC is escourted away by Ace Steel before he can investigate further.  Odd.  Could this be the start of a Jimmy Jacobs vs. Colt Cabana storyline?

mms://128.241.238.33/ROH/sDelerious_vs_Delay.wmv

We then have a very competitive (for a squash) match between Delirious and Seth Delay.  Seth actually gets a large portion of the offense in this match, hitting some nice flying forearms, a sweet dive to the outside, and what I guess you might call a backflip Edge-o-Matic.  When he misses a 450 Moonsault, Delirious is there to capitalize, hitting him in the back with a flying splash right as he gets up in a very cool spot, then locking in his crossface submission for the win.  Good stuff from Delirious, and Seth Delay would make a good permanant addition to the midcard, I think.  Interestingly, Delirious is now the only wrestler to compete as both the squasher and squashee on ROHVideos.com.  If you haven't seen Delirious in action before, check out this match.

ROH - War of the Wire 2  (7/28/06, Dayton.  Estimated Attendence: 600.)

PRE-SHOW MATCHES:

1) Bobby Dempsey defeats Mistico Fantastico, Rhett Titus, Conrad Kennedy III, Shane Hagadorn & one other student when he pinned Rhett Titus with a Death Valley Driver.

MAIN SHOW MATCHES:

1) Jimmy Jacobs vs Trik Davis was a good Rohvideos match. I'm a mark for Jimmy Jacobs as I think his gimmick is original and well played. Perhaps that's really because the goofy little SOB really is that emo. Lacy looked hot as hell like usual. The crowd was hot for this one and it was a good way to start the show.
Jimmy Jacobs pins Trik Davis with the Cannonball Senton.
Rating: **

2) The Embassy vs Davey Richards & Jerrelle Clark - I've been impressed with Clark in the past but tonight he just never seemed to catch on fire. This was my first time ever seeing Davey Richards and for the most part I was impressed. Sal and Jimmy are hilarious together and the Dayton crowd was hot for this entire match. Lots of toilet paper and jeers for Mr. Rave. Unfortunately we were not graced by the presence of Prince Nana... and I bet he isn't going to be happy with Rave tapping out! It felt like the ending of the match was lacking something and came out of nowhere. Not much of a pop for the finish, I think a lot of people missed it and it was sudden... not much time for any drama.
Davey Richards forces Jimmy Rave to tap out to a Stretch Muffler.
Rating: **

3) PURE TITLE MATCH: Nigel McGuinness vs Colt Cabana - I was not a fan of this match at all. Of course, I freely admit that I'm biased because I was never a fan of their feud either. There were some funny bits in the match, I admit, but it never really picked up. For a brief second it seemed like they might really get started and then Nigel bailed. I don't have a problem with countout endings... the Nigel/Dragon match from the Weekend of Champions Night 2 was a HOT finish. This one seemed poorly executed and made no sense. Nigel announced his intention to get counted out and Cabana actually went out into the aisle to argue with him... "What do you think I am, Nigel? Some kind of retard?" Actually... YES! The crowd seemed really deflated after this finish. I'm not sure if it was the heat or people being pissed off about this match, but it took some time and hard work in the next match to get the crowd going again. Cabana and Nigel were both WAY over with the crowd though.
Nigel McGuinness won by tricking Colt Cabana into going to the outside, then whacking him with a microphone and letting him be counted out.
Rating: * 1/2

4) Christopher Daniels & Matt Sydal - This was defintely my favorite match of their series. I was hoping that no one would get hurt in this one and everything was seemingly perfect. For a brief moment I thought these two guys were cursed while in the ring together. This match had a hot finishing sequence that was almost as hot as Allison Danger! These two defintely had the crowd eating out of the palm of their hand. My the end of the match the crowd was defintely back into the show.
Matt Sydal pins Christopher Daniels with what has been described as Naoki Tanisaki's Implant.  Is that some fancy puro way of saying Implant DDT?
Rating: ***1/2

INTERMISSION! THANK YOU for giving us two intermissions tonight. The Oven was HOT. The weather outside was great and I was very appreciative.

5) Irish Airborne vs Pelle Primeau & Alex Payne - This was a decent match. I enjoy the IA enough as a lower-card tag team, but I'm not sold on them as major players in the tag division just yet. Of course, I still haven't seen their match against the Briscoes, which I would assume was their biggest opportunity to date. This match was a simple Hometown Hero gesture... good match, nothing we haven't seen before.
Irish Airborn pins Alex Payne after a Death Valley Driver onto the knees.
Rating: **

6) Four Corner Survival: Bryan Danielson vs. Homicide vs. Austin Aries vs. Delirious - This match was awesome! The interaction between all the participants was great. Everyone was "afraid" of Delirious and he was TOTALLY OVER with the crowd. They did a good job of keeping Dragon/Homicide away from each other... teasing us with Homicide trying to get at Dragon and them having a brief exhange on the outside of the ring. Dragon running from Homicide was great and the 187 was extremely over with the Dayton crowd as well. I wasn't expecting to see Aries win but it was an awesome sequence. Dragon had Delirious in Cattle Mutilation when Aries tagged himself in by slapping Delirious on the leg. He then proceeded to climb the turnbuckle and and hit Danielson with the 450 Splash. Awesome finish and the perfect mix of comedy, drama, story and action! I'm defintely not sad that Aries won the right to challenge for the ROH World title!
Austin Aries pins Bryan Danielson with the 450 Splash to earn a World Title shot.
Rating: *** 1/2

7) Strong/Evans vs Briscos - This was my first time seeing the Briscos live and I was not disappointed. Jack also looks really good since returning from Dragon Gate. He had some new moves and was really impressive. Strong brought the goods with some stiff chops and kicks. The Briscos won with the Spike Jay-Driller. I'm glad they pinned Strong as that gives them heat leading into a tag title rematch.
The Briscoe Brothers pin Roderick Strong with the Spike J-Driller.
Rating: ***

INTERMISSION! THANK YOU AGAIN! You could cut the air in that place with a knife, man. The crowd was great though... and for the first time I wasn't sitting in a section with a bunch of people trying to be cute or get themselves over. Overall this was probably the best Dayton crowd I've been a part of actually.

8)  No Rope Barb-Wire Match: BJ Whitmer vs The Necro Butcher - Nothing I can really say does this match justice. It was completely brutal and intense. They started out slow and the crowd was HOT FOR BLOOD! Well, they got plenty of it as we saw a powerbomb from the ring through a barb-wire covered table on the outside. We saw thumbtacks... including an exploder into the thumbtacks. We saw boards wrapped in barbwire. We got BJ Whitmer diving off of a ladder on top of a board that had Necro sandwiched between barb-wire and the ring. This was brutal, sick stuff. The crowd ate it up and Whitmer was super over. Whitmer is defintely my MVP of 2006 so far... I can't believe the year this guy has had. Also, Homicide was out by ringside encouraging Whitmer. I think they must have filmed a promo in the back with Homicide agreeing to "coach" Whitmer since he had experienced the first War of the Wire. Just a guess for now... we'll have to wait for the DVD.
BJ Whitmer Pins The Necro Butcher with a Wrist Clutch Exploder onto thumbtacks.
Rating: **** (For the sacrifice of the wrestlers and the heat of the crowd... everyone in the place standing for the entire match!)

Awesome, awesome show. This is a MUST BUY when it comes out on DVD. My only complaint was Nigel/Cabana... it was totally weak. Everyone else ranged from really good to great. CHECK IT OUT!

ROH - July 29, 2006 Show (7/29/06, Cleveland. Estimated Attendence: Average estimate seems to be around 550 or so)

PRE-SHOW MATCHES:

1) Alex Payne, Rhett Titus, Bobby Dempsey vs. Trik Davis, C.J. Otis, Pelle Primeau
Alex Payne defeats Pelle Primeau with a Fisherman's Suplex.

2) Egotistico Fantastico v. Shane Hagadorn (Non-Title)
Top of the Class Trophy was not on the line. Shane Hagadorn makes Egotistico submit to the Just Facelock after apparently hitting him with brass knucks.

MAIN SHOW:

1) Claudio Castagnoli vs. Delirious
-Fun match. Claudio is still over as a face despite being a heel. But the love for Delirious was beyond insane. Some good leg work by Claudio. This had some hilarious little spots and the expressions by Claudio to Delirious' antics were fantastic. Good opener with the Lizard Man picking up the win.
Delirious pins Claudio Castagnoli with a roll up.

2) Tag Team Special Attraction
Jimmy Rave & Sal Rinauro vs. Colt Cabana & Ace Steel
-It's to be noted that I pegged Rave with a roll of TP and caught Sal right in the face with another roll. Fun times. Colt and Ace came out with cowbell in hand. Yes there were cowbell chants, great stuff. Great comedy bits between Colt & Sal made this match. After Colt was on the recieving end of a cheap shot and was walking it off on the apron I asked if he was alright, he replied "Nah" while holding his head. It's the little things like that that make me love ROH more by the way. Ref was distracted Ace murdered Rave with, yes, the cowbell. Split him open pretty good. Some cheap tactics and Sal cutting off Ace leads to a Rave win.
The Embassy defeats the Second City Saints when Jimmy Rave rolled up Colt Cabana after a springboard spinkick from Sal Rinauro.

3) Jay Briscoe vs. Jimmy Jacobs
-Pre-match Lacey came out and went on about how she didn't know where Jimmy was. Lacey was gorgeous as usual, but Jacobs appeared on the upper-level singing the Balled of Lacey. Yes sir, we got a live performance of it. Golden. Jay Briscoe gets a big pop and comes out. F*** him up Jay, f*** him up chants. Good match. Jimmy went for the Contra Code 400 times, okay that's a bit of an exaggeration. Anyway, Briscoe wins with the Jay Driller.
Jay Briscoe pins Jimmy Jacobs with the J-Driller.

Afterwards Jay talked about GenNext, says the tag titles are coming to the Briscoes. Mark talks about unfinished business with Cide. BAM. Out comes Cide.

4) Mark Briscoe vs. Homicide
-Naturally Cide was over like rover. Another good match with some heavy Mark killing by Cide. Tope Con Hilo was nasty, Cide had full speed and went over the railing. Unfortunately for Mark's face though, as Cide hit him so hard Mark too flipped over the railing. Some back and forth action end when Cide blasted Mark with a Lariat.
Homicide pins Mark Briscoe after the Lariat.

Afterwards the Briscoes beat down Cide and leave. Whitmer comes out to check on Cide. The crowd got damn loud for BJ and fast, very cool. I'd like to see Cide & Whitmer vs. the Briscoes, but that's just some fantasy booking on my part.

5) Generation Next Together For One Last Time
Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, Jack Evans & Matt Sydal vs. Davey Richards, Jerrelle Clark & Irish Airborne
-OH. MY. GOD! This match was 13 shades of crazy. Too much happening in the beginning to even say. This was one of the craziest matches I've ever seen live. All I have to say is dueling 630's by Clark & Jack followed shortly by dueling Shooting Stars by Davey & Sydal. You didn't know who to watch on that one. I watched Jack & Davey, but it was far too nuts to keep track. Everyone was on during this match. Awesomeness right here folks. Get the DVD when it comes out ASAP.
Richards, Clark and Irish Airborn defeat Generation Next when Davey Richards pins Jack Evans with the Double Arm Implant DDT.

Afterwards GenNext laid their shirts in the middle of the ring as a symbol and left. The Briscoes came from the crowd and spit and wiped their asses with the shirts. GenNext came back out and chased them off. Unfortunately the Briscoes night wasn't over as Cide came back out with a chair and blasted both of them in the heads with a chair. Jay was cut nicely.

Intermission. Coming back to Cleveland in October with Survival of the Fittest!!!! I marked out big time. Already in it are Bryan Danielson, Austin Aries, Roderick Strong & Samoa Joe. I'm amped already.

6) Match for ROHvideos.com
BJ Whitmer vs. Chris Cage
-This was a mildly-sour point of the night for me, not very though. Whitmer really gave Cage an opportunity to show what he was made of. Unfortnately for us Cage is made of blandness. BJ got some damn good love, but Cage almost took it out of the crowd. Luckily Whitmer debuted a new move to his arsenal. Can you say sitout Tombstone? Got a pop as no one really liked Chris Cage. Whitmer is awesome anyway. Cage wasn't awful, but I think ROH could do without him as there are far better talents.
BJ Whitmer pins Chris Cage with a Sitout Tombstone.

7) Main Event #2- Special Challenge Match
Christian Cage vs. Christopher Daniels
-Good pre-match fun. Daniels talked Christian into a five second pose for the peeps. This was a good back and forth match that the crowd was red hot for. Daniels puts Christian away with the Angel's Wings. Daniels complimented and adjusted to Christian's style very well which made for a great match. Cleveland loved these guys and there was little to no booing. Christian got grand love here. So that other town that shall remain nameless for their ignorance can eat it.
Christopher Daniels pins Christian Cage with the Angel's Wings.

Afterwards Daniels said he'd love to have Christian back in ROH again. Christian put ROH over (before) and after the match. He then said he wants another shot at Daniels and he wants to come back to ROH and (here's the clincher for me) it's gotta be in Cleveland. So Cleveland got awesome love from Christian as Christian got awesome love from Cleveland. "Please Come Back Chants" as well.

8) Main Event #1- ROH World Title Match
World Champion Bryan Danielson vs. Pure Champion Nigel McGuinness
-Another one of those "gotta see it" matches. Similar to their first match, not as good, but if they EVER duplicate that first one I'll be shocked. SHOCKED! Anywho, Nigel was WAY over. Again, like last time, I'm shocked. My cousin and I were two of the few cheering AmDrag. Bizarro world. Anyway, some awesome points here. 1) A nasty headbutt exchange. You could here the thumping of the skulls over the crowd. Pain. 2) Excellent leg work by Dragon. 3) Spot towards the end here. On the ropes Nigel headbutts Dragon. This is the sickest thud I've ever heard, it crotches Dragon. Nigel hits a second rope Lariat that DESTROYED AmDrag. It was vicious. Dragon rolls to the floor and under the ring. Nigel is staggered in the ring AmDrag comes from the other side turns Nigel around, Small Package for the win. Awesome match.
Bryan Danielson pins Nigel McGuinness with a small package to retain the ROH World Title.

Various Notes:
-Cleveland crowds continue to be damn loud and very appreciative. ROH must love us right now.

-There were some lighting problems as they flickered quite a few times. Went out during Whitmer's match but he continued to kick the ass of Chris Cage.

-It was HOT really f'n HOT. I'm about 5 pounds lighter. No s***!

-There was a relatively annoying fan that got shut up by the fans once. He acted up again and got a "please go home" chant. Classic.

-I'm in love with Allison Danger. She was absolutely on fire tonight. Gorgeous. The engagement rings in the mail. :)

-It wasn't quite a full house. However by the volume of the crowd you'd think it was filled to the rafters.

Overall great show. Not one bad match aside Chris Cage being "meh" in my eyes. Everything else was awesome. Every last bit was very strong though. Cleveland seems to be in line for some very awesome shows from here on out. I think we've proven how much we love ROH. And them giving us Survival of the Fittest speaks volumes for their confidence in us as a crowd, I think.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/19/06 at 04:51:12

ROH - August 4, 2006 Show (8/4/06, Long Island.  Estimated Attendence: 700)

PRE-SHOW MATCHES

1) Shane Hagadorn retains the Top Of The Class Trophy.

MAIN SHOW!

1) Bryan Danielson defeats Jack Evans via submission. Post match, KENTA runs in but gets jumped by the Briscoe brothers. Davey makes the save. He promised a beatdown of the Briscoes later in the night.

2) Christopher Daniels & Matt Sydal defeat Irish Airborne. Sydal hit a standing moonsault, followed immediately by Daniels hitting the Best Moonsault Ever for the pinfall.

3) Colt Cabana defeats Claudio Castagnoli via rollup. The ending was the same ending of Cabana-Punk from P:TFC.

4) ROH World Tag Team Championships - Ultimate Endurance. Austin Aries & Roderick Strong vs Homicide & Ricky Reyes vs Adam Pearce & BJ Whitmer vs Jimmy Rave & Sal Rinauro

- The Embassy of Jimmy Rave & Sal Rinauro have been eliminated first.
- Adam Pearce & BJ Whitmer are disqualified, eliminated.
- Austin Aries & Roderick Strong defeat Homicide & Ricky Reyes to retain the ROH World Tag Team Championships.

- Steve Corino returned to ROH and attacked Homicide, so thus begins the build to the next Homicide vs Corino war!

INTERMISSION

Steve Corino and Homicide continued the brawl as the show comes back. Adam Pearce attacked Homicide. Corino and Pearce were brawling with Homicide when BJ Whitmer ran in...to aid Homicide!

5) ROH Pure Wrestling Championship: Nigel McGuinness defeats Delirious.

6) Jay & Mark Briscoe defeat KENTA & Davey Richards after a Spike Jay Driller on Davey Richards.

7) Samoa Joe defeated A.J. Styles by pinfall when Joe locked in the rear naked choke, then threw Styles back in a suplex and a bridged cover.

After this match, Joe took the mic and said something to this effect: It's good to have a main event with A.J. Styles in Ring of Honor, even though the two of them are better known in a bigger company that's just headlined by "a bunch of old guys."
Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/19/06 at 04:55:18

ROH - Fight of the Century  (Edison NJ.  Estimated Attendence: 800)

PRE-SHOW MATCHES:

1) Derrick Dempsey defeats Pelle Primeau via submission. Dempsey gets the win with the Orange County Stretch.

MAIN SHOW!

The crowd looked in the 750-850 range. There were definitely more people than they had in May, but it looked to be fewer than they had in December and February. That may have just been because of a different seating layout, though.

(1) Colt Cabana beat Sal Rinauro via submission. This was mostly comedy, with the other Embassy members abusing Sal, and Colt brushing off most of Sal's attempts at offense. The crowd really loved Cabana, as usual, and he finished it off with a reverse Boston crab that nearly bent Rinauro in half. Fun opener.

(2) Shane Hagadorn beat Bobby Dempsey to retain the Top of the Class Trophy. This may have been the shortest ROH match ever. Hagadorn knocked Dempsey out with one brass-knuckled punch and pinned him.

Immediately following the match, Lt. Commissioner Adam Pearce came out and praised Hagadorn, and told him that if he worked really hard maybe he could be Lt. Commissioner one day (I never realized that was a wrestler's goal). Hagadorn seemed honored by the praise, and Pearce politely asked him to head to the back so he could take care of some business. He called out BJ Whitmer and told him to join he and Jim Cornette's side in the war against Homicide. Whitmer said he respected Homicide and Steve Corino came out and jumped him from behind.

(3) Nigel McGuinness beat Claudio Castagnoli, Christopher Daniels, and Jay Lethal in a 4 Corner Survival Match. This was probably the pleasant surprise of the night. I'm a big fan of all four of these guys, but I didn't expect them to go all out the way they did. It was pretty much all action, and at one point after a great exchange between all four men trading big moves, the crowd broke out in an "ROH" chant, which you don't hear too often in the third match on the card. They all hit most of their big moves, with the pins being broken up. Finally, in all of the chaos Nigel hit is pendulum lariat on Claudio and got the pin. Everyone got a big ovation after the match.

(4) Austin Aries & Roderick Strong beat Matt Sydal & Jack Evans, Jack & Dave Crist, Jay & Mark Briscoe in an Ultimate Endurance Match to retain the ROH Tag Team Titles. The rules, as is usually the case in Ultimate Endurance Match, is that each fall, which ends with a team being eliminated, is contested under different rules. The first fall was under scramble rules, the second was under tapout-only rules, and the third fall was a straight tag match for the titles. They started out quickly with the scramble match, with each team hitting tons of highspots and dives to the outside. It went nonstop for about 5 or 6 minutes, until Irish Airborne (The Crists) cleanly pinned the Briscoes to eliminate them. It was a bold move to elevate a new team, although the crowd wasn't too happy about it, with loud "bulls---" chants.

That elimination sort of killed the crowd during the next segment, which was the tapout rules match. It was mostly Strong and Aries working over Irish Airborne until Strong got one of the Crists to tap out to the Stronghold.

The final segment got the crowd back into it, as the two GenNext factions faced off for the tag titles. I'd like to see these two teams go a little bit longer against each other, but as it was it was a very good, exciting segment. Evans and Sydal hit their big flying moves. One big spot included Evans teasing doing a dive onto Strong and Aries, but instead ducked out of the way as Sydal flew over him onto Strong, and then Evans springboarded onto Aries. The final spot saw Strong knock Evans out of the ring. Sydal came off with a shooting star press, but Aries moved out of the way. Sydal landed on his feet, but immediately met with a huge boot to the face by Strong. Strong hit his half-nelson backbreaker, and Aries hit the 450 for the win. Great segment and overall a strong match.

Intermission was next.

(5) Homicide & BJ Whitmer beat Adam Pearce & Steve Corino via disqualification. The show's token brawl. Corino did some micwork insulting the crowd, which he's one of the best at. The match started out with Homicide being worked over by Pearce and Corino until Whitmer made the save in the surprise that every single person in the building expected. They brawled through the crowd for a few minutes. Back in the ring the match had good heat. The action wasn't anything spectacular, but the personalities were all over, especially Homicide, who's getting a babyface push like no one ever has in ROH (that being the Steve Austin anti-hero push). I've seen some people knock Pearce because he's bigger and doesn't do the super athletic "state of the art" stuff that some people seem to only want to see. However, he's been exception in brawling matches this year, is a good talker, and moves pretty darn well for his size. I think he's been a fine addition to the roster. Eventually Whitmer and Corino brawled to the back, leaving Homicide and Pearce in the ring. Out of nowhere the Briscoes hit the ring, attacking Homicide, leading to the DQ finish. After the match Pearce raises the hands of the Briscoes, I guess with the idea being that the Briscoes are now part of Cornette's army, possibly playing off of the face that he managed them in ROH in late 2003/early 2004.

(6) KENTA beat Davey Richards. This was the breakout, star-making match that we've been waiting for Richards to have in ROH. This could have easily been an acceptable main event. During the early part of the match they traded big kicks and KENTA got Richards in some holds. And one point about halfway through KENTA went for the Busaiku knee, but Richards caught him in a big head and arms suplex for a nearfall. Richards hit a spinning tope through the ropes onto KENTA, and then KENTA knocked him all around ringside. They got back into the ring and started trading nearfalls to huge reactions. Richards kicked out of KENTA's tiger suplex, and reversed KENTA's leaping top rope falcon arrow. He also reversed the Go 2 Sleep several times. KENTA finally hit the Go 2 Sleep for the pin. Both guys got a huge ovation after the match.

(7) Bryan Danielson retained the ROH World Title by going to a 60 minute time limit draw with Samoa Joe. They had a tough act to follow, but the crowd was ready for this match from the minute the last match ended. It was clear that they were going long because Joe's entrance started at 10:19, and ROH shows never end before 11, and usually not before 11:30. Most of the crowd favored Joe, but Danielson definitely had his supporters. The early stages had a big fight atmosphere, as this was ROH's version of Steve Austin vs. The Rock. The early part of the match saw Joe getting advantages on Danielson until Danielson bailed out of the ring to big heat. They did this for the first 10-15 minutes until Danielson got a bit of an advantage and worked Joe over with various hold. Joe would keep fighting out and flustering Danielson. About 25 minutes in Joe went for the muscle buster to a huge pop, but Danielson wiggled out and chop-blocked Joe from behind, playing off of his attacked on Joe's leg in the 3-way with KENTA on 6/17, and the Cage of Death match on 7/15. Danielson then pulled Joe's legs out beyond ringpost and bashed it with a chair a couple of times. He then worked over Joe's leg for a good ten minutes or so, including doing a figure 4 which Joe reversed. Danielson went to the top for his headbutt, but Joe caught him with an ace crusher. Danielson rolled to the outside and Joe hit him with his elbow suicida. Joe then hit the Ole Ole kick on Danielson. He went for a second one but Danielson avoided it and went to work on Joe. He then set Joe up for an Ole kick of his own, and hit a dropkick to the head instead. He then got Joe into the crowd and hit a springboard somersault dive onto Joe in the crowd. The crowd never really sat down from this point forward. Back in the ring things really picked up with Danielson getting on the cattle mutilation several times with Joe always getting to the ropes. Danielson avoided the muscle buster a couple of times as well. He reversed an attempted Joe Boston crab into a rollup for a nearfall. They then started punching it out in the middle of the ring as the crowd broke out in a "this is awesome" chant. Joe hit the muscle buster, but Danielson got his hand on the ropes. Joe got on the choke but Danielson got to the ropes. Danielson was able to hit Joe with his top rope backdrop suplex. Danielson then went for his unexposed elbows to the head that he's won many matches with, but Joe fought out of it. Danielson then locked on the crossface chicken. Joe made it to the ropes. The announcer said that there was one minute left in the time limit. Danielson went for a rollup but Joe countered and locked Danielson in the choke. Danielson struggled in it for about 45 seconds, with everyone going crazy. Eventually his arm started to go limp, and the ref checked it once, and it dropped, but the bell rang to signal that the time limit expired. The crowd chanted for five more minutes, and Danielson teased giving it. He got into the ring, quickly shook Joe's hand and ran out of the ring to a chorus of boos. This was a great 60 minutes, with the final parts of the match being off the charts awesome. I'd probably say that it wasn't quite at the historic level of Joe vs. Punk II, but it was at least the second best 60 minute match in ROH history, and one of the best matches of the year.

As Danielson argued with the crowd while walking up the aisle, KENTA appeared behind him on the ramp. They teased that they would fight, but the Briscoes jumped KENTA from behind. Homicide then came out and fought with the Briscoes. It ended up with The Briscoes fighting Homicide 2-on-1 in the ring, while Joe was on the outside. Joe looked pensively at the situation, and then jumped into the ring and made the save for Homicide. Joe got on the mic and said that he saved Homicide because they always had respect for each other even though they hated each other, and Homicide saved ROH from CZW. Homicide then proposed that on September 16 in New York they could team up to wrestle the Briscoes. Joe accepted the offer, so that show will feature Danielson defending the title against KENTA and Joe & Homicide vs. the Briscoes. That's quite the lineup already.

Overall Thoughts: This is an easy DVD purchase, as ROH is 4 for 4 in Edison. There wasn't a bad match on the card, and several were very good. The final two matches were awesome and are really must-sees. There seems to be some debate online about the finish of the main event, but judging by being in the audience, it got over very well, and most of those who saw it were happy with it. ROH likes to do 60-minute time limit draws. It's just something that you accept when you watch it. I like them too. World title matches have been going 60 minutes for years. I don't really see what the problem is, even if they don't have a decisive rematch (although I believe that they will). Danielson hadn't done a 60 minute draw yet during his nearly 11-month reign, so it's not like it's overkill. All of that being said, ROH is on quite the run right now, and there are a lot of good DVDs out, as well as lot of good ones that will be coming out in the next couple of months.

ROH - August 12, 2006 show  (Liverpool, England.  Estimated attendence: 1600)

An ROH Fan Slam Convention with the entire ROH crew of wrestlers and staff was held earlier in the day, in the same facility as the main show. Lots of autograph and photo opportunites, as well as Q & A sessions with Gabe Sapolsky, Colt Cobana and Claudio Castagnoli. Everyone on hand was so friendly, approachable and pleased to be there. They were an absolute credit to their profession. I met and chatted with literally everybody, from ROH Owner, Cary Silkin, to Colt Cabana, to Bryan Danielson, to the Briscoes, and the list goes on and on. Fantastic start to the festivities.

The evening show was held in the Liverpool Olympia facility; a Victorian ballroom with an elegant and ornate interior. It should look great on the DVD release. I estimate the crowd to be in the 1,600 range, just shy of a sellout (the building's capacity was 1,700). Extremely hot crowd throughout. Fans from all over Europe had flown in for the event.

(1) Matt Sydal defeated Spud, Colt Cabana, and Jonny Storm in a 4 Corner Survival match. Sydal pinned Spud with a shooting star press. Cobana's ring entrance with the Copacabana theme music was great. He was by far the most over wrestler in the match. Good action.

At the conclusion of the match, none other than Chris Hero came running past me through the crowd. He hopped the barrier and slid into the ring to cut a promo. Lots of 'F*** Chris Hero' chants. He had big time heel heat. Colt Cabana came rushing from the back to attack him, chasing him out of the ring. Hero disappeared through a side door.

(2) Davey Richards defeated Jimmy Rave with a modified brainbuster. Before the match, Nana and Rave were bombarded with tons of toilet rolls from the crowd. This was a very good match. Richards was very impressive. Prince Nana was absolute phenomenal working outside the ring, selling the intensity of the match and progressively flipping out more and more at the dramatic nature of the match.

(3) B.J. Whitmer defeated Claudio Castagnoli with a jacknife hold. Decent match, not quite as heated as the previous two matches.

After the match, Chris Hero again came through the crowd and attacked Whitmer, which brought back Colt Cabana to even the odds. Cobana grabbed the mic and challenged Hero to a match there and then.

(4) Colt Cabana defeated Chris Hero with the Colt 45. Enjoyable match, both worked hard and Cobana's work in this match was notably more intense than in the opener, where he had done a bit of comedy. Cobana was so over at the end of this match, fans were dancing to his entrance music. He was clearly one of the stars of the show.

(5) Team UK (Doug Williams & Jody Fleisch) defeated Team Noah (SUWA & Go Shiozaki). Williams pinned Go with the Chaos Theory after SUWA turned on him. Fantastic match. SUWA heeled on the crowd early on, throwing water over some of those in the front rows, and even spitting into the crowd which was a little crazy. Go Shiozaki was very impressive, delivering some of the stiffest kicks and chops I think I have ever seen. Shiozaki turning on SUWA led to the pinfall, after there had been miscommunication between the two earlier in the match.

There was then a 20 minute Intermission, during which the ROH announced their return dates to the U.K.: Friday March 2nd, 2007 they will be in Broxbourne, Kent; and Saturday, March 3rd, 2007 they will return Liverpool, again at the Olympia.

(6) Robbie Brookside defeated Chad Collyer to retain the FWA Heavyweight Title. This was the weakest match on the show. Even though Brookside was the hometown boy, and worked as a face, he didn't get much heat apart from a few kids cheering for him. The fans didn't exactly crap on the match, but they were quiet for long periods and there was little heat. It just seemed out of place on what had been up to that point, a 'pure' ROH show.

(7) Austin Aries & Roderick Strong defeated The Briscoes to retain the ROH World Tag Team titles. Aries pinned Jay after the 450. Simply an outstanding tag team match, with great heat. A lot of dual chants going on throughout this match. Crowd loved all four guys.

(8) ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson defeated ROH Pure Champion Nigel McGuinness via knockout to unify the titles. Awesome main event. Crowd was split maybe 60-40 in McGuiness' favour, and there were a ton of duelling chants for both guys. The key early on was that both guys had the other in a submission move, and there would be a rope break. This happened multiple times and it ended up 3-3 each, with no more rope breaks for either man allowed. The huge turning point in the match came when Danielson posted McGuiness on the outside, busting McGuiness open. Danielson then repeatedly headbutted him several times, causing a HUGE ball of swelling on the side of McGuiness' forehead. Danielson then threw a disorientated McGuiness into the crowd and then proceeded to do a running somersault senton. McGuiness' blood was all over the floor and on Danielson's back. Huge heat by this point, with now at least 90% of the crowd cheering on McGuiness. Danielson rolled back into the ring, and McGuiness made it back in at the count of nine, to a thunderous ovation. Danielson then had McGuiness in a camel clutch and proceeded to repeatedly elbow McGuiness in the back of his head, knocking him out and leaving the ref with no choice to stop the match and award it to Danielson.

Crowd were irate at the referee's decision, but didn't feel screwed - more disappointed that the home country boy didn't win. People were so into this match by this point that they were kicking the guardrails in anger at the match finish. After the match, Danielson offered McGuiness a rematch on August 25th in St Paul, Minnesota, and McGuiness accepted. Danielson left the ring and McGuiness thanked the crowd for their support as the show ended.

As I made my exit, most of the undercard guys were in the foyer, mixing with fans and selling their gimmicks at a table. Prince Nana was there, shaking hands, as were the Briscoes. I loved how up close and personal the ROH guys were with the fans, it was something that really shone today. This was easily the best wrestling show that I've ever attended live, and I've attended upwards of 20+ WWE/WCW/Other wrestling shows over the past 16 years here in the U.K. A phenomenal experience live, and I can't wait to buy my ticket for the March 2007 return date.

ROH - August 13, 2006 Show  (Broxbourne, England.  Estimated Attendence: 600+.)

Ring of Honor were in Broxbourne, England this afternoon for the second and final stop on their huge UK tour. Once again, WrestleMag were there to bring you ongoing results throughout the night. Thanks to everybody who joined us for our live coverage earlier this evening.
Results and notes from the sold out Broxbourne Civic Hall (crowd estimated at around 600) as follows:

MAIN SHOW!

- The show started with Austin Aries announcing he would not be able to wrestle due to having broken two ribs in Liverpool. Bryan Danielson interrupted him to question whether he was injured, which led to Bryan Danielson vs Roderick Strong being announced for tonight's show. As Danielson was leaving, SUWA attacked him.

1) Go Shiozaki beat BJ Whitmer in the opening match of the night following a moonsault from the top rope. Good match to get started. The crowd are quiet so far compared to last night, and a chant started up during the opening match acknowledging that.

2) Jonny Storm beat Jody Fleisch and Spud in a three-way match after Storm hit the Wonderwhirl on Spud and got the pinfall. Fast paced match, plenty of highspots which the crowd popped for. After the match, Claudio Castagnoli, Chris Hero and Chad Collyer hit the ring and attacked Storm and Spud which led to toilet paper being thrown all over the place by the fans. Nigel McGuiness and Robbie Brookside hit the ring to make the save - the crowd went nuts for Brookside. They were joined by Colt Cabana who evened things up. This led to a 6-man tag being announced...

3) Colt Cabana, Nigel McGuiness & Robbie Brookside beat Chad Collyer, Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli after McGuiness pinned Collyer following a hard hitting clothesline. Very good match. The crowd have livened up a hell of a lot since the show began.

4) Bryan Danielson called out SUWA after what happened at the start of the show, and challenged him to a match for Danielson's Title. SUWA accepted and they went at it straight away, with Danielson being busted open in a stiff, brutal match which (like 99% of everything ROH of done this weekend in the UK) the crowd loved. Danielson picked up the win after a small package.

5) Doug Williams beat Jimmy Rave with the Chaos Theory. Rave got the full toilet paper treatment upon his entrance.

6) The Briscoe Brothers beat Matt Sydal & Davey Richards.

7) Bryan Danielson defeated Roderick Strong to retain the ROH Title after using his Cattle Mutilation finisher to get the submission win.
