UFC - 61 Result: Tito Ortiz vs Ken Shamrock
By DHB (July 9, 2006)

Tonight UFC 61: Bitter Rivals in Las Vegas did not disappoint... unless of course you were hoping Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock would last a few rounds. In that case, you just may have been a little disappointed. It seemed the fight almost ended the moment Bruce Buffer was finished announcing the the start of the fight. The bad blood was evident in the eyes of both fighters, but it would take a mere 1:18 seconds into the opening round for the fight to end in favor of Tito Ortiz.

At the start of the round, Shamrock leaped into attack mode throwing a flurry of punches. Tito answered back with- punches of his own. In a clinch up standing against the fence, Tito showed superior strength by picking up Shamrock

and putting Shamrock to the canvas on his back.

It didn't take long after that. With Shamrock's head and neck up against the bottom of the fence of the Octagon, Ortiz threw 4 to 5 elbows to the head that went unanswered by Shamrock. Shamrock was defenseless and the Ref stepped in and called a halt to the fight.

Some in the Audience booed the Ref's decision to halt the bout.

Shortly after the fight, Ortiz told Randy Couture (who was working the mic) that he would give Shamrock a rematch if Shamrock wanted one.

my thoughts... apparently Shamrock showed just why Ortiz is the man and why Shamrock should just go back to working WWE style.  ECW could use a "shooter" to replace Angle right now.  Getting your ass handed to you in under 2 minutes in the Octagon that you were once the premier dominant ass kicker in, does not bode well for one's future in the sweet science of mixed martial arts.  Sadly Shammy is a shell of his former badass self and Ortiz looks like a million damned dollars in the ring.  The funniest line is that Ortiz is willing to kick Shamrock's ass again if he wants it (not how he said it, but it sure was implied).  Ortiz really needs some competition in the Octagon at this point.  And Oliver, if you are reading this, just how bad is Shamrock looking these days in the ring?

Shamrock needs to retire, the guy is way too old to be going full-time MMA these days.  He needs to take a lesson from Rickson and retire with his dignity intact . . . Oops, too late . . .

Shmrock isn't a bad fighter, he's just TOO OLD. He lost to Rich Franklin in a short match a couple of years ago as well. Give it up, man.

Ortiz has competition. He just doesn't get put into those matches. Vitor, Jardine, Lister, and (of course) Chuck Liddell are all in Ortiz and Shamrock's division. Along with Forrest Griffin (who lost a close match by decision to Ortiz, even though pretty much EVERYONE was saying it should have gone the other way), Stephen Bonnar (former Gracie student), and some of the other young ones (Bisping, Hoger, Forbes, etc)

Oh, I'm not saying Shamrock isn't good.  As you said, he's getting old.  Shamrock was one of the best . . . In his prime.  That was over a decade ago, though, and he's just aging, and that happens to the best of 'em.  Ric Flair ain't the masterpiece he used to be, either.  Same thing here.

That's why I say Shamrock should retire.

I agree ;-> Most of my comment was towards the "Ortiz needs competition" bit ;->

Dana White is a good bookerman.  ;)

Yes. Vince should fear the day he White goes all-out wrestling booker.

Well, I do know that this latest UFC PPV created quite a buzz around the office where I work.  It's been a while since ANY big fight did that.

Shamrock really needs to come to ECW... at least there he won't get beat up for real.  ;)
