New X-division champ... Senshi pinned Sonjay Dutt and Samoa Joe in a triple threat when Steiner came down and took out Joe.

I think this is a good move, keeping Joe's non-pinned legacy intact, allowing Joe to work heavyweights for a time and building up to the awesomeness that will become of a Senshi vs Joe feud.

I dunno, I think this is leading Samoa Joe up to the NWA World Heavyweight Title.  I think this was to get Joe away from the X-Division Title.
