AJ Styles - Is he that good?

Tom_ImpPosted on 07/15/03 at 22:09:17

I find myself ashamed as a wrestling fan that I even have to ask this question, but I never get to see any other wrestling aside from the WWE. I don't even get NWA-TNA in my area. :'(

That said, I have read a lot about this kid AJ Styles, but never once had the pleasure of watching him in the ring. Now that he is the new NWA-TNA champ (must be pretty good if the owner dropped the belt to him), I'm curious just how good he really is. Is he the future of the sport like so many have said or is he just another good wrestler that will fade with time?

I haven't seen much TNA myself, but from what I've seen, he seems to combine the best aspects of RVD and Lance Storm.  In other words, he can pull out some great spots and get the crowd behind him easily, while having a smooth, crisp technical base that makes his matches flow well.

I haven't seen enough of him to say that he's in the same league as Benoit, Guerrero, and Angle, but I can say that he is damn good - and he's reached this point in just a couple years.  If he keeps getting better, expect to see him as the Internet's #1 favorite within 5 years.

I've been following A.J. Styles for at least 3-4 years, since he was merely in NWA Wildside. You're best bet is to go on RFVideo or NWA-TNA or a tape trader site and find some of his work. He was also in the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Title tournaments with Air Paris. And a few Velocity's or whatever.

In my opinion, he has weak Mic Skills, but not horrible, and probably could be improved well. He is amazing in the ring, has about 6 versions of the shooting star press. I'd say he's the future of wrestling, minus his about 190 lb frame.

I agree with pulsar. He's a great athlete and pretty crisp in the ring. The only thing he lacks is mic skills, but like a benoit his work in the ring gets him over. He's still young and can improve greatly, but IMO he is one of the best  talents around in the business today.
