TNA Presents the Super X Cup

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 08/28/03 at 23:58:37

It seems that, in an attempt to create an American equivalent to the Super J Cup (which was instrumental in showing the world what wrestlers such as Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit could do), NWA-TNA is going to be putting on what they claim is the first annual Super X Cup on September 3rd.

Here are the brackets:

Juventud Guerrera vs. Nosawa

Johnny Storm vs. Teddy Hart (Bret's nephew)

Jerry Lynn vs. Chris Sabin

Frankie Kazarian vs. Michael Shane (Shawn Michaels' cousin)

Any predictions on how it goes?  And do you think it'll be as successful as the Super J cups have been in bringing recognition to the winners?

Also of interest, the card will feature a War Games match with Chris Harris, James Storm, Jeff Jarrett, Raven, and D'Lo Brown facing Simon Diamond, Johnny Swinger, Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles, and Oliver's pick for the winner Shane Douglas.

I've gotta see if I can convince my university's Wrestling Club to order the event, cos... like...  I WANT IT!

The only problem is the lack of Shark Boy on the card.

Hmmm... Bret's Nephew, and Shawn's Cousin?

I think a better bet is: How long into the match until Vinny Mac gets on the phone and hires them for an UberWork ;->

Well, Shawn's cousin is the present TNA X Division Champ.  I've never seen anything or heard much about Teddy, though.  I gather he's just starting his professional wrestling career.  You're right, though.  Within 5 years, I'd wager that both Michael Shane and Teddy Hart will end up in WWE.

Given the history between Bret and Shawn, though, my pick for the final is Teddy Hart vs. Michael Shane, presumably with Hart coming out on top.  Cos, like, if TNA knows what's good for them, they'll steer clear of a screwjob type ending for that one.

You never know, they may do it to boost ratings ;->

Though I think that'd obviously be a work.

And if they do both end up in the WWE, I seriously doubt Vinne Mac would even CONSIDER a repeat performance... It worked out once (Kept the belt from potentially being trashed, Micheals got a good push, ratings went up, he got to continue developing the Evil Heel Owner character, etc).

I'm pretty sure he realises it wouldn't work that well again.

Nah, I doubt it.  The Super J Cups, to the best of my knowledge, have always been about straight up great wrestling.  I think they'll go for the same sort of thing with the Super X Cup.

I wouldn't rule out a storyline along those lines in the upcoming weeks on regular TNA shows, however.

Regarding Michael Shane and Ted Hart ending up in WWE, I think it's a forgone conclusion.  Give them 5 years and, unless they self-destruct, they should both be there.  I can see the screwjob being re-enacted by WWE, but only as a work.

The J-Cup tourny are getting oversaturated all over the US. Ever since ECWA made the first one in 1997, few indy feds decide to go with it. It follows with JCW with the J-Cup (just had the 4th one last week), CZW Best of the Best (4 years and going),  there was last year IWC Super Indy tourny which was disappointing, and there was this fat shit carny promoter Roland Alexander King of Indies. I'm pretty sure there are few other jr. tournys out there only few or no one heard of. This year there was WPW Best of the West. ECWA peaked with their Super 8 tourny at 2001 and nothing comes close to it. The only Jr. tourny came up unique was MCW Shamrock Cup. Have six wrestlers win their matches and fight each other at the same time and on the same night. No fed have done it except for WWF Six-Pack match. I don't know how TNA going to go with it. It going to get bastardize sooner or later.
