Where can i buy some All Japan and New Japan DVDs or VHS? Thank!
CrplsPosted on 04/04/06 at 16:58:04

I would recommend both NOAH and Dragon Gate over AJPW and NJPW if you're talking current or relatively recent stuff, but either way:

Just three NOAH shows off the top of my head: 1/22, 2/17, 3/5

1/22 has an excellent KENTA vs Marufuji match for the GHC Jr Heavyweight title along with Akiyama taking his rightful place at the head of NOAH.

2/17 is a tour opener so no huge matches, but Marufuji/Rikio vs Marvin/Williams is a really good match that is somehow topped by the Kobashi/Honda/Kanemaru vs KENTA/Morishima/Yone 6-man. The Low-Ki vs Kotaro match is a pretty solid Junior match as well.

3/5 has the Young Generation vs Veterans most of which are really good matches. Rikio vs Ogawa is the "worst" but Ogawa is horrible and Rikio destroys him so it's even alright. Misawa vs Morishima had the wrong winner IMO but it a really brutal and fun match, which bodes well for the inevitable rematch when Morishima wins. Misawa showed his faith in Marufuji and KENTA as a big part of the future of the company even as juniors by having one of them defeat the just defeated former GHC Champ and the other survive everything until a Burning Hammer.

Plus it has the Juniors Tag Title Match with Fujita and Hidaka from ZERO1-MAX vs Kanemaru and Sugiura, which did something I didn't think would happen for a long time, if  at all, and topped the KENTA-Marufuji match as my favorite of the year within a month and a half.

I will also add that if you're just planning on ordering a few now and not continuously, and you've had any decent exposure to Japan, stick with what you've liked previously. I don't want to be held responsible for you spending money on something you don't like. :p

I could probably recommend some more if I knew more about what style of wrestling you like or specific wrestlers, etc.
Psymin1Posted on 04/05/06 at 18:39:29

I have only really watched garbage japanese wrestling.  I love that, but I was looking for some technical/high flying stuff, really.  Thanks for the suggestions, and I won't hold you responsible if I don't like them!

if you want hardcore women's japanese wrestling, you should try to find some of the AJW stuff from the mid to late 80s... when the Jumping Bomb Angels were regularly doing battle with Dump Matsumoto and her gang of thugettes.  They were so hardcore that the women in AJW would actually blade!  They were using a type of hardcore style that ECW would eventually bring to the US.  They would usually feature one comedy match, one wrestling match and one hardcore brawl per 1 hour weekly US TV show version.

If you're looking for a solid combination of technical and high flying work, you can't really go wrong with Dragon Gate. Top notch stuff there. KDOJO and MPRO are really hit and miss but can be really good as well.

If you're looking for garbage stuff, go with BJPW. It's not always my cup o' tea, but it has some great workers both in and out of actual garbage matches.

...

I'm used to seeing Rick mention older stuff... but him mentioning 1980s AJW is really weird.

If for whatever reason you did want some old Joshi, AJW early 90s (specifically 93) is always touted as some of the best stuff.
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/07/06 at 03:14:36

LOL  Chris, you sell me short.  I know that if you want some of the best women's wrestling in the world, you check out 80s and 90s AJW.  :)

We used to get it every Friday (then eventually every Sunday) on the prime time feed of a cable channel based in Hawaii at the time called "Tempo Television".  They also were showing Pacific Polynesian Pro Wrestling as well as The Golden Age of Professional Wrestling on Sunday nights.  For a while they even showed some Mid-South Championship Wrestling.  Tempo was on my cable system at night while Financial News Network would be on during the day.  And at one time, Prime Network would air for a couple hours between sign off of FNN and sign on of Tempo.  Yes the same Prime Network that is now Fox Sports Net.

And yes, Big Japan is the garbage fan's best choice.  Unless the match is featuring Mike Samples.  I once saw him work a show in Evansville, Indiana in front of about 125 people with the guy that went on to become TNA referee Rudy Charles.  The thing that stuck out most about Samples was that he took off his belt, started whipping his opponent with it, the opponent tried to blade, got no juice, so he bladed three more times with still no juice.  All while Samples was whipping him with the belt while his pants kept falling down.  It was one of those "you had to be there it was so funny and bad" moments.

I wasn't really selling you short... just in the 8 years I've talked to you in various forms, I've never seen you mention AJW. :)
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/09/06 at 03:08:23

I'm surprised you didn't know of my knowledge on it.  Mariko and I had a discussion or two on it at one time way back in the early days of the #tnm channel.
CrplsPosted on 04/09/06 at 03:52:42

You mean Miko? :)

I was gonna say you should've brought that shit up back then... you could've had Jose or Oliver's spot in her heart! :)
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/09/06 at 04:30:09

LOL  Oliver's email to her that slipped through to the entire list is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

And actually if you've ever visited her Cherrybabe site, it's Michiko, Miko for short.  :)

http://www.cherrybabe.com/

I highly recommend it.
CrplsPosted on 04/09/06 at 09:12:30

I know it's Michiko... but you called her Mariko. :)

I used to go to her site a lot back in the days she was still updating the Joshi site all the time.
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/10/06 at 02:29:53

Mariko... Machiko... Oliver's "secret" woman... it's all the same.  ;)

That's a pretty cruddy cover up... Mariko, eh? Perhaps you're revealing yourself as the true source behind Anubis?
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/11/06 at 03:03:33

Dude, why would I be Anubis?

He initially was like CCoey, but has since really turned it way down a few notches.

In fact, if I were going to be anyone else here, I'd make sure it would be a mega face, since my normal character is to be heelish when the need is called for. You should know that from #TNM and the TNMWA, Chris.

Plus we all know that BILL (Mecha) Lentz is Anubis. (Hi BILLiam)  And to quote Bam Margera's Uncle Don Vito, "I donna wanna play none o'dem reindeer games."
CrplsPosted on 04/11/06 at 05:21:49

How are you a heel? You don't do anything heelish and are incredibly respected and liked around here. :)

And there is nooooooooooooooooooooo way BILL could be Anubis without me knowing about it.
Snabbit888Posted on 04/11/06 at 05:27:56

Rick is that pompous old guy that is respected but you always want to punch in the face because he's always talkin' 'bout da good ol' days. :)
CrplsPosted on 04/11/06 at 05:33:22

It's fine in a forum setting...

Now, back in IRC...

And really, I wonder how old everyone thought Rick was when they first talked to him. Rick was "old school" back on the early days of the list and he was just out of college then.

Fuck, he's only 30 now. :)
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/12/06 at 04:39:52

See Chris, Ryan "get's it".  That's exactly the type of heel heat I was talking about.  :)

Speaking of old school... how about Jamal as Ugawa (or whatever he is) with his trusty Cuban manager (complete with cigars in the breast pocket of his suit) that is very similar to that of one Playboy Gary Hart's old style of dress and managing so far in two weeks.

H8-SuperstarPosted on 04/12/06 at 09:53:19

Now we're fucking older, have expanded our fucking horizons on fucking wrestling and fucking views, TNM list is fucking dead, Mike Sweetser is a fucking douchebag, few of us are fucking married with one fucking idiot going back to the fucking bitch who broke his fucking heart for second fucking helpings; still to this fucking day,we still fucking hate each other's fucking guts and that my fucking friends is a fucking shoot from The Franchise Ray motherfucking Douglas! ;D ;D ;D
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/13/06 at 02:32:50

And Ray Wong's vocabulary consists of the one word in the English language than can be a noun, a verb, an adjective, and an adverb all in the same run-on sentence.  Nicely done, Chief.
