I just saw that Kimbo Slice is in the latest version of the Ultimate Fighter. I've only seen people mention him before so it will be interesting to see.

Who's next though? Bob Sapp?
pszPosted on 09/17/09 at 02:10:04

Kimbo Slice was impressive four years ago (or so) when he was new, and frankly shocking to watch (street fights, dares, pay-per-beatdowns etc)

His performance to date in Pro MMA has been... Less than stellar.

It will be interesting to see how he fares with the other participants.
MamushiPosted on 09/21/09 at 06:12:29

If he actually works at rounding his game and gets the skills to keep him out of trouble on the ground he could become quite the addition to the heavyweight division I think.

Nobody in the UFC is going to try and protect him as a marketing gimmick like they did in EliteXC though.  Big powerful, streetfighting internet sensation isn't going to cut it anymore.  He needs to develope the "skills" to pay the proverbial "bills."

Apparently he's already booked to fight on the finale.  I assume that means Dana told him he's fighting somebody whether he wins the show or not given that they can't reveal the results of the show.

And despite what Dana says about how the only way Kimbo Slice is getting into the UFC is if he wins TUF, I imagine that Kimbo is going to end up being in the UFC regardless so long as he improves through the show and/or puts on a good enough showing at the finale.

To his credit, he does seem like a legitimately nice person though.

He won't last in the UFC as a legit heavyweight. He's too old, too slow and has very few skills. Billed as a guy with big, heavy hands, he doesn't throw those very well either. In his fight with Roy Nelson, he looked scarred and did very little.
pszPosted on 10/12/09 at 14:54:26

Not that Roy Nelson looked all that amazing either.

I'm starting to see why neither guy has been in the UFC... Slice can't handle MMA at this point, and Nelson has no problem "laying on a guy" and "love tapping him" for the win. He'd have been boo'd out of a live event. Or had his face smashed in by Lesner or Mir...
JeepGuyPosted on 10/12/09 at 18:47:25

Oh, I agree with you on Roy Nelson. I think Roy, who is very talented, likes to do minimal work and if that means laying on someone with his big fat gut and love tapping them until it is over, he'll do that but this fight was more about Kimbo Slice shutting up all his detractors and showing that he had learned something over the past few years.

It looked like he went backwards and showed absolutely nothing.

Can't knock the guy for trying to earn a living but man what a way to do it if you have no skills to speak of.
Snabbit888Posted on 10/12/09 at 20:01:09

I think Kimbo's in a tough position where it's hard to learn the fundamentals when you've been able to get by on just beating the crap out of lesser fighters for so long.  Once you get set in your ways, it's tricky to reverse that and learn the basics.
JeepGuyPosted on 10/12/09 at 20:12:36

The thing is, he doesn't look so tough. On a few Youtube videos, he punched the hell out of few guys but his MMa fights have for the most part looked like crap. Yeah, he caught Ray Mercer, beat Tank Abbott who might have taken a dive for a payday and traded with James Thompson for a knockout but his other fights, he looked horrible as if there were no skills at all. He didn't even come out swinging.
ZedjaPosted on 10/14/09 at 19:14:14

Well, to me Kimbo seems to be a black version of Tank :D
JeepGuyPosted on 10/15/09 at 00:07:07

I think he might be a little better than Tank Abbott. Tank has no skills whatsoever, is flabby and way out of shape, gasses easily. Kimbo has some skills, he did submit Ray Mercer pretty easily. Will he be better in the long run than Tank? Probably not because fighters are better and more well rounded now than they were in Tank's heyday.
Rick GarrardPosted on 10/15/09 at 04:25:18

In Tank's heyday it was all about winning at least 4 fights in one night in a tournament format.  That's why guys like he and Shamrock have not been very successful since state athletic commissions started limiting fighters to one fight a night and then imposing a post fight minimum suspension so that they don't get hurt just in case they have been injured and didn't know it.

Out of all the originals, Severn may be the only guy that would have been better suited to the current format for matches than the one night tournaments.
JeepGuyPosted on 10/15/09 at 04:43:23

Agreed, but in Tank's heyday, most fighters weren't nearly as well rounded as they are today. If Tank had to go 4 fights with today's heavy's or even light heavy's, he'd get killed.

I think of the first wave of UFCers, Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock would have been best suited for today's game, assuming they were in the prime of their careers.

I like Severn but I think he'd get killed in his weight class.
pszPosted on 10/17/09 at 18:56:15

I dunno... He was big, and he was DEFINATELY a damn good wrestler. He may not be Brock-sized, but I think he'd do well, just from skill.
pszPosted on 12/06/09 at 23:59:07

Well, Roy Nelson won this season and actually had to FIGHT in the finals, which was good to see.

Kimbo beat Houston Alexander. WOW was Houston disappointing. I'm all for "Keeping with the game plan", but when it's A: Stopped working by the third round, change it up, and B: Circling around to the point where the fans are booing you isn't gonna cut it.

He didn't do bad when Kimbo finally got pissed enough to step in and throw some punches (He may have actually had a chance early on throwing some of his own).

Slice did show, however, a VASTLY improved ground game (compared to the season and EliteXL anyway), but he was obviously worried about his knee.

I still thought the second fight of the night took the cake ;->
JeepGuyPosted on 12/08/09 at 19:01:25

I was surprised by Roy Nelson's knockout. He's got grappling skills and can obviously punch, I just think his lazy, do just enough attitude has hurt his career.

I was expecting a really quick fight between Houston Alexander and Kimbo. Figured Alexander would come out throwing hands and feet rather than showing us he knows how to move in circles and Kimbo was rather tentative and unsure as to what to do as far as cutting off the ring or at least how to approach his opponent. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

Yeah, that second fight took the show.
