UFC gets the Not So Big Thing

JustinCaseYouForgotPosted on 10/21/07 at 13:27:54

Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) - International superstar Brock Lesnar has already achieved high grades for his transition from pro wrestling to mixed martial arts. Now the former NCAA Champion and four-time All-American is ready for the next step in his career - taking on the best heavyweights in the world in the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization.

UFC President Dana White announced the signing of Lesnar to a promotional contract during the pay-per-view broadcast of UFC 77 at the US Bank Arena.

I assume he has been in MMA before?  Any idea on how he has done?
Rick GarrardPosted on 10/21/07 at 16:18:45

How can he still be the "Next Big Thing"?  Shouldn't he be "The Big Thing" by now?  Talk about missing one's full potential... for him to still be the "Next Big Thing" at this point of his career, means that he should soon become the "The Thing That Never Was".  Here's hoping that Dana White puts him in the Octagon with someone that will ground and pound him crying back to Rena.

He's gonna get owned.

On June 2, 2007, Lesnar made his long-awaited MMA debut and took only 69 seconds to destroy Min Soo Kim with strikes that led to a submission.

They will feed him bottom-level competition in fights they are pretty sure he won't lose, he'll pick up a few wins then the first legitimate fighter he faces he'll get destroyed.

JeepGuyPosted on 10/21/07 at 21:19:55

I am sure they'll feed him some easy wins but who knows, in that time, maybe he'll learn how to be a better all-around fighter.

After all, he is a big guy with a legitimate wrestling background ... throw him in with some good trainers and he might become a decent fighter.

What the UFC needs is Bob Sapp!  ::)

Lesnar should be forced to go through The Ultimate Fighter program...  Now THAT would equal ratings.

While that might be the more fair way to go about things, I think the Lesner signing is something more than just bringing in another big guy. Since Lesner is well known to the wrestling fanbase, I imagine the hope is that a large percentage of those same fans would come over to MMA to at the very least, follow Brock's career.

There have been plenty of guys with lesser skills than Brock who've made careers for themselves. Look at Bob Sapp with K-1, Butterbean in Japan, Kimo in UFC and others, Tank Abbott and Kimbo Slice to name a few. You have to figure that Brock has at least more skills than those guys.

Considering that Lesnar has been away from WWE since WM in 2004, chances are most mainstream US wrestling fans won't even remember who he is.  3 1/2 years is half of the Jim Cornette wrestling cycle.

I think saying "most" wrestling fans won't remember who he is a bit far fetched.

UFC.com announced that Brock Lesnar will make his UFC debut against
fomer UFC World Heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 81 on 2/2/08 in
Las Vegas.
pszPosted on 11/06/07 at 14:42:12

That's right, debut him against the champ, title match or not. Way to tell all the guys that have done it "the hard way" that they're not worth it, and the guys that have been actually winning matches in UFC that, well, you just don't care.

I think I'm starting to see what Randy was talking about.
Rick GarrardPosted on 11/06/07 at 15:13:33

And if Lesnar wins (on some technicality), it will merely prove that UFC is as scripted as WWE.
VertigoPosted on 11/06/07 at 18:23:06

He's facing a FORMER champ!

It's fair. He needs to live up to his hype by fighting a good fighter. It's not like wrestling where he'll run through some jobbers on his way to a Championship.
JeepGuyPosted on 11/07/07 at 05:32:39

Not exactly what I thought would make for a first UFC fight. I guess we'll learn right from the start if Lesner can fight.

And if not, he'll have lost to a former champion.

Not a bad way to come into the UFC. It could have been worse.
Rick GarrardPosted on 11/07/07 at 05:46:18

yeah, he could be jobbing to Ken Shamrock instead.  ;)

Could be worse than that ... Dan Severn, Kimo or Bob Sapp.
Rick GarrardPosted on 11/07/07 at 07:11:28

or Tank Abbott.

I always liked Tank Abbott. Too bad he enjoyed his beer and food more than doing cardio work so he wouldn't gas in the ring every match or learning how to do more than just hit people.

He needed to do more than just hit people?

Hard to hit someone after giving up your back.
blslivewirePosted on 01/04/08 at 22:35:41

I got to meet Rob Van Dam at Booker T's PWA show last week. For what it's worth, he's taking Brock.

He needed to sing and dance more with Three Count!

The dancing might have helped with the cardio.
