New error with install

Tom_ImpPosted on 10/31/04 at 04:44:21

I've got a new one for ya Oliver, and I really hope you can walk me through this because now I can't play at all.

I decided to delete everything and start from scratch with all the new files. I unzipped the tnm7se-3.zip file and then tried to run it. It always worked perfectly in the past, but now I'm getting a message that says
"16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\Temp\TNM7SE.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT  The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

What in the hell did I do to my system to make it unable to install the program now? Please help.   :(

Scratch that. I found another thread about the same problem and the solution was in there.

It's just weird that it happened considering I did a fresh install no longer than a month ago with the same files.

Did you happen to install Windows XP SP 2 in the meantime :)?

Anything downloaded with the auto-update function of XP can do that to you. Nobody has been able to tell me why, though.

I have installed that new SP 2 update, but I could have sworn I did that before I updated last time. I could be wrong though.

Either way, it's weird, but at least it works now.

I've been spending several hours trying to find out what caused XP to do this in the first place.

The only thing I've stumbled upon so far is that XP for some undefined reason extracts its default CONFIG.NT and AUTOEXEC.NT from time to time.

That's all well and good, however those contain hardcoded references to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. If you decided to install your XP somewhere else (e.g. C:\WINXP), you're out of luck and get the error you got.
