SE won't install on XP

trellianPosted on 08/11/03 at 21:43:15

I know I have posted on this when I was trying to use the beta version, and now the same problem occurs in the full version. I run the setup file, and after reading the licence agreement, I try to press 'q', and nothing happens. The caps lock is not held down, and the q is working everywhere else. I can scroll up and down the agreement with the cursor buttons and the page up and page down as well. I have an older PC with Windowsd 2000 on it, and this problem does not occur here.

Please download a pre-installed version here: http://www.tnm7.de/cgi-bin/tnmcms.cgi?module=downloads&record=34&action=sr&layout=download&offset=

Also, it might help hitting ALT+ENTER to bring it full-screen. If "q" works then, your video driver is faulty. I'd give that a shot before installing the pre-installed version.

Well, it is obvious that something is awfully wrong with my keyboard when running Tnm. Some of the buttons doesn't seem to work. In the main menu, all the menus available are the "Options", "Plugins", "Go to TNM Homepage" and "Quit". This means that the C, D, S, and E doesnt work. WHat is really weird is that Q suddenly works. Other keys that don't work is Y, U, A, J, M and Z, plus ENTER. This problem does not occur anywhere else.

The key question remains: does this or doesn't this happen in fullscreen mode as well?

If it doesn't happen in fullscreen mode, it's a faulty driver you can thank for that (program runs the same in either).

If it does happen fullscreen as well, we'll have to probe further.

Happens in full screen as well.

I posted the error description you gave in MSDN's developer community and got the following pointers: (I don't know what - if anything - applies, so I'll just pass them along)

- it's most likely either a video or a mouse driver (!) that is doing this; solution: install only drivers that are made for XP, not 2000

- try to put your DOS shell into compatibility mode (should be in Properties somewhere)

- if you have a USB keyboard, an old or faulty USB driver might cause the problem

- if you have a PS/2 keyboard, the cable might not be connected completely or may be broken

- if you're using a setup with different accounts in Windows, make sure you're using an account with admin rights

That was just about all that was constructive :)

Some of the wilder suggestions were to "f... XP and get W2K" and "get a new keyboard" but I don't think they either need to be repeated or followed ;-)

Thanks! I have finally fixed the problem. It was as you suggested, a compatability issue. I still cannot get the shift button to make capital letters, but I am using the caps lock. A little awkward, but I am quite satisfied.

I just want to thank you for the greatest support ever, Oliver! Excuse me, but I have a circuit to start! :)
