Running TNM7 on Mac

stevetrashPosted on 05/24/08 at 17:47:55

I'm able to run TNM7 in DOSBox. Has anybody had any luck getting the non-DOS plugins working on a Mac? I was hoping that Crossover would work, but no luck so far. Is running Windows through a virtual machine my only option here?
???

At this point, pretty much. I've not heard of much luck using Wine (or similar) to JUST run plugis.

Now, DosBox currently can run Windows 3.x... I guess it'd be safe to assume that at some point (in the distant future) it may run 9x as well.

Course, by then, it will probably no longer be an issue, as we'll all be in our 90s...

Can't you just use BootCamp to run Windows? Then everything would work, wouldn't it?
stevetrashPosted on 05/27/08 at 16:04:50

Yes, Boot Camp will work but that sort of defeats the purpose because I can't use all my OS X programs at the same time.

So I was looking for something native to OS X... DOSBox seems to work pretty good for running the DOS stuff. I wasn't able to actually install TNM using DOSBox, but I just copied a Windows install and it appeared to be running OK. I read a few other threads in the forums of people running TNM on DOSBox so I was curious if anyone had gotten it running with all the plugins.

Theoretically, CrossOver Mac should be able to launch those Windows-based plugins, but I haven't had any success in getting it to work. In fact, the plugin I installed wasn't even showing up under the 'run plugin' window.

VMWare/Parallels looks like the best option right now, but using a VM means having to wait for Windows to boot up, plus I have to have a copy of Windows to install.

How did you get it to work using dosbox?  Mine stops on "Finishing installation"... I waited 15 minutes, and gave up.
stevetrashPosted on 05/29/08 at 03:25:13

Yeah, I had the same exact problem... I had to install on a Windows machine first, and then copied all the files to my Mac.

Unfortunately I don't have access to a Windows machine.  :(

Not even at a public library or something?

Not one  that I can actually install something on.

*If* I can get some time, I could zip up an installed (non-registered) version and upload it for you.

Thanks Jake, I appreciate you offering that up. Oliver was kind enough to send me the files though. :)

What version of Dosbox do I use? I'm trying it on 0.72, and when I try to run TNM (by typing tnm.bat in the C:\ prompt)  I get a message from Dosbox that reads:

Illegal command: start.
JakePosted on 06/13/08 at 22:53:07

Have you tried just typing "tnm"? I doubt it helps, but who knows.

yeah, no luck.
pszPosted on 06/14/08 at 01:09:09

I seem to recall the same issue on Vista 64. I *THINK* I had to tweak the tnm.bat file.

Make a backup of your tnm.bat file, and edit it to read:
@echo off
echo x>tnm.pid
if exist tnmgs.no goto onward
if exist tnmgs.* del tnmgs.*
if exist program\tnmgs.exe start program\tnmgs.exe
:onward
program\card
rem program\cwc
if exist tnm.pid del tnm.pid
That may not be all I had to do, but just in case, I posted it. (Hell, I may not have edited it AT ALL... It's been awhile :-P)

Also, make *SURE* DosBox has read/write permissions to the TNM directory, subdirectories, and files.... Otherwise you'll be in for a sad surprise ;->

Now...

You will still get the "illegal command: start", but TNM should load fine.

I have found, though, that I have to more or less max out the display speed, otherwise it's too slow. There are also some issues during the pre-match intros (DMA Buffer Allocation Failed). They don't stop TNM from working, but they are odd.

Personally, I mapped my "Games" directory to DosBox's C:\, so I have to cd\tnm7se before I run it. Shouldn't make a difference, but you never know...

(Note: I run a Korean-created CVS version of DosBox 7.0, so the "Vanilla" DosBox 7.2 should have no problems)
ggazooPosted on 06/14/08 at 17:01:56

Thanks for your help psz. I changed the tnm.bat file like you suggested. I no longer get the "illegal command: start", but now when I type "tnm.bat" to run the game, nothing happens. The C: promompt just comes up up, and TNM doesn't start. I could type "tnm.bat" all day and it won't run.

How do I check or change DosBoxs' has read/write permissions?
pszPosted on 06/15/08 at 01:39:54

Not sure, on a Mac... On Vista/XP/2K, it's simply a matter of allowing that particular user's account and/or "Everyone" access to that folder.
ggazooPosted on 06/22/08 at 19:57:07

I've pretty much given up on DosBox... TNM won't run no matter what I try.

The only other option I can think of is upgrading my OS X to Leopard, and running Boot Camp to use Windows XP on... we're talking over $300 here though. Damn.
rey619Posted on 06/26/08 at 19:16:57

OK, I have recently switched to Mac as well, but I am at a loss.

I have installed Parallells and Windows XP (I'm running Leopard), but I can't run either the .bat file or the install file. Do I need some sort of DOS emulator in addition?
pszPosted on 06/27/08 at 01:13:59

If you're running XP, then just having the latest TNM should be enough (You're not running XP x64, I assume).
rey619Posted on 06/27/08 at 10:54:48

I don't know.. I just installed an XP version that was floating around at the office. When I try to open the .bat file, it briefly shows a DOS box, then goes away. Ditto with the install file.
pszPosted on 06/27/08 at 14:08:38

what if you manually run them from a command prompt, instead of double clicking?
rey619Posted on 06/29/08 at 16:12:50

It says that 'tnm' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
pszPosted on 06/29/08 at 19:25:03

You are cd\ to the TNM directory...... Right?
rey619Posted on 06/30/08 at 09:23:57

I am in the right directory.. yes.. I haven't used DOS in years, but you just type the name of the .bat or .exe file, yes? I tried that, with and without the file extension.
pszPosted on 06/30/08 at 14:22:18

Yeah, it's just

cd\<tnm directory>
tnm
